Teaching with underrepresented students

Hello, I am a black rookie teacher currently teaching students in a summer academic program and I have one black international student in my class who has expressed to me that she doesn't feel like she belongs in the room. I have tried to encourage and comfort the student.

I am curious to what degree I should acknowledge this in our interactions, because it feels wrong to act like she is just like all the other students. On the other hand I don't want to perpetuate her sense of separation or project my ideas about her identity onto her. But I would like to offer her some tools for managing this disorienting experience. Do you have any tips for working with students like this?

I ask because I am considering a longer career in education and I want to find some strategies for working with students who feel like outsiders without making them feel more estranged. Interested in hearing your stories and advice as well as any readings you can direct me to.
