I think we all know/remember this teacher we despised during high school, college or university. The one(s) who got pissed at you when you didn't understand the course material and are just plain rude to students for no real reason at all. The ones who sometimes even look like they hate their job, but at other times you can see they are made for their field of study.
Just today I had an oral exam with practically the most feared professor of my bachelor studies. I was frightened to go up to her, rightfully so because she has even made people come out of the exam crying. She laughed and got very angry at me and the answers I gave. Which made me cry also, as soon as I got home.
However, she is clearly an incredibly intelligent woman, without a doubt one of the best in her field in my small country. But she doesn't seem to realize the course is literally the toughest of the whole bachelor. It's quantum chemistry.
So why are there teachers and professors like this?
Were they abused by their parents as a kid? Very unfortunate, yes, but not a reason at all to take it out on us.
Are they insulted we do not understand material that is so easy and logical to them? Your job is to make us understand it as best you can though, and certainly not get mad when we don't. How well you possibly try to explain something, our understanding of it will never be 100% within your power.
Don't like your job as a professor? Pretty sure you can quit and still give seminars and do research in your field without having to deal with students you hate.
Thank you if you are able to offer me some more insight in the matter.
