I'm appalled, just appalled at our education system

So I live and work in one of the backwardsass states -- Louisiana. New Jersey is better than Louisiana, so that'll give you an indication of the swamp of a society that's located deep in the dirty south.

We are known for beauty queens, football, and Jesus-worshiping and little else.

Our school system is pathetic, even in the wealthier districts like the one where I teach.

I teach 12th grade English and I also adjunct at a local university, teaching sophomore American literature classes.

I'm just appalled at the poor vocabulary skills of the typical high school senior and college sophomore. Not only do they not know what simple words mean, but they don't even know how to pronounce them.

Superficial, egotistical, altruism, posterity, promontory, economical, dissident, paradox, contrast, enigma, advocate, simultaneous, coincide, espouse, contradict are just some of the selections from the past week in which students either did not know the meaning of the word, and most them likewise could not pronounce it.

WTF are we doing to students for 12+ years of formal education? This is appalling! No wonder why my students have little or no thoughts about anything ever -- they don't have the vocabulary to think!
