Meaning of GPA with two numbers separated by a backslash?

I see mostly GPA (Grade Point Average) posted as e.g "3.8 GPA"

However, I have also seen a format with a backslash separating two numbers, e.g. "3.8/4.0 GPA".

What does it mean when two numbers are stated?
