I understand how vague this question sounds and how there are so many other factors involved. Is it possible to make a generalisation? Have there been any good studies into the topic?
What are your thoughts on the subject?
Me and my friend are both humble ESL teachers and we were discussing it. I get frustrated about how our private language centre puts such an emphasis on marketing and I feel many of the activities just exist for marketing purposes and are of little educational value.
I maintain that non profit language centres could exist and be run with a focus on education rather than sales. Our centre has more sales staff than teachers and 3 times a month we have to dedicate an entire lesson to recording the students recite the vocabulary they've learnt (often without understanding the meaning of the words or how to use them in a sentence). The parents can watch the video (although I'm skeptical they do). The fact that we use green screens and iPads is a used to sell the program because parents see the technology and figure the centre must be good if we have iPads....
