I understand university rankings are based on good criteria by people who may know what they are doing, but they remove the vital ambiguity of the actual situation. A university’s strengths should speak to themselves based on what they’ve done and people visiting and understanding the flow of the institution and various other factors. It should be a personal process. The rankings wrap this all up into one universal number which although is easy, is fundamentally misrepresentative! They’ve taken potentially unjustified liberties in their analysis! Remember: lots of politics potentially involved there as well.
It also creates this weird hierarchy in education that perpetually leads to elitism and a host of unhealthy attitudes towards the purpose of a college education. These institutions should exist on the backdrop of collaboration, not competition and rankings fundamentally push against this.
