Apologies in advanced. I am not well versed on this subject matter or really with politics so this is all a bit alien to me, but this caught my eye and I wanted gain a better understanding. So if something is worded incorrectly, I say something out of context, or whatnot please feel free to call me out on those. I'm also not entirely too sure if this is the correct subreddit to post this to, but I figured I might as well post it and then be directed to the more appropriate subreddit.
So I came upon this video in regards to a discussion between CNN reporter, Dana Bash, and the current Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, in regards to the reopening of school this coming fall. Now I can understand the reopening of the school system is definitely beneficial for students of all ages for their physical, mental, and emotional health. With the lack of daily interaction compared to the school environment especially in the younger age groups, I can see how their well-being could deteriorate especially if they thrived on social interactions between their peers and teachers. I have a niece who was a freshman in high school who has developed depression and asked her parents for a therapist due to lack of diverse social interaction, home life, and other driving forces that occurred during the school year and first few months of quarantine. I can also understand that some kids who are dealing with abuse at home or have a less than ideal situation at home do not have that support system they had when schools were still open.
Regardless of the above I have two things that I found to be an issue for me 1) children of younger ages contract the virus at a far lower rate than the general population and 2) DeVos does not give a clear affirmation in regards to utilizing the route of remote learning as a long term option.
1) The reason why I have an issue with this is because yes, I understand that kids of younger ages do not contract the virus as easily, but they are also ignoring or rather not acknowledging the fact that younger kids do not have as much freedom as adults do. Yes, younger kids can roam around freely around the neighborhood and locations close by, but compared to adults they do not have the means to travel as far to go out to the beach, restaurants, social gatherings, etc. Obviously there are also some restrictions for kids such as age when it comes to bars and night clubs where a great number of people are gathering after being quarantined for so long (just an assumption. Don't know if this is completely true). In my opinion kids do not have the means to come in contact with various people with varied amounts of exposure to the virus on a daily basis compared to adults. For these reason alone, I can see why kids currently have a lower rate of contracting the virus. Now given the opportunity to gather at lets say schools, I can see the number of kids contracting the virus sky rocketing to unimaginable numbers. This paired with the fact that many kids may be asymptomatic carries due to being young, healthy, and parents/relatives being exposed to COVID-19 due to social gathering or being front line workers. This is definitely worrisome for those who are immunocompromised.
2) When Bash questions Devos about remote learning options, DeVos never gave an affirmation or plan for areas where the virus does and inevitably will flare up. She said that remote learning would be possible "short term" if there was a flare up in particular areas, but not to plan for long term remote learning. I get it, due to schooling at home the educational value is diminished compared to when schools were open and I can understand that many of the student will or even are currently falling behind academically. I feel regardless of the current situation, plans for both in school and remote learning should be developed in case dire situations were to arise. It may just be me, but it seems like there is also a political agenda just by the way DeVos would provide a response and constantly push for "schools should have plans" or "kids in school, in person, in the classrooms".
My questions is why such the heavy push for reopening schools given the current situation? And is there a political agenda in regards to avoiding remote learning?
DeVos asked if she has a plan to reopen schools. See her response (CNN)
