Hello everyone!
I am a first year teacher so I am learning the ropes of the profession while also juggling this whole COVID situation. Ofcourse there is a learning curve here, but I feel like a fellow teacher and parent (of one of my students) judges my work harshly.
Basically, after spending a month on capitalization and punctuation, I gave my class a test. The page was double sided, I told them that they have the choice of which side they choose to complete. If they chose to do both, I would give them the higher mark. Each missing capital/punctuation was worth 1 point and students were allowed to use everything in their English binder (reference sheets and pracrice sheets included).
This kid got 71% on one side and something like 64% on the other so ofcourse I gave him the higher grade. This parent got frustrated because one of my sentences was worth 13 points and since the student didn't do well on that one question (5.5), he got a bad grade overall. She believes that it is evident that her son understood the concepts well, but misunderstanding that one sentence screwed him over... However, based on the other mark, I believe this belief is wrong.
I told her I'd be happy to talk about it with her, but today she just turned away and ignored me when she saw me in the hallway.
Am I wrong in this situation?
