How is technology impacting our younger generation in schools?

I am writing this question to gather others opinions as to how YOU feel technology is impacting our students in elementary-middle school aged children.

I am an educator in a middle school setting, and have mixed feelings about it, so I thought I’d gather others opinions and points from both the negative feelings and positive feelings to help balance my thoughts about it.

I have a daughter in elementary, and she had grown up in the world of technology while at school, but at home, I work with her the way my teachers worked with me when I was her age. (Minimal to no technology, lots of writing practice, memorization practice on different topics)

Need help:

Hi. I’m in high school and have just moved to a different state; in basic classes where I had high 70s + low-mid 80s, I’m getting straight 100s on every test, but because of the bureaucracy that is the public school system, they refuse to move me up a class. I guess this is more a problem with the country, but I fell like I am legitimately wasting my time; everyone is stupid here and the magnet school admissions have already closed. I was wondering whether it would make sense to quit this awful school, solely focus on the GED for a couple months and get straight As and a 4.0 gpa (out of 4 lol). I understand that this is unconventional and it would be a little tough to pull it off, but I’m about to turn the minimum age in my state to take the test…

If I do choose to do this, certain colleges require high school teacher referrals (even if they accept the ged) and I wonder how one is able to get past this.

I guess this may lower my shot, but because of my unique situation, I’m hoping they could look past this and see my grades.

I’m also hesitant to go to a community college to peruse my education and interests because I’ll then have to transfer, which will also most likely lower my shot further.

Please help!

3 Golden rules of Accounting

Golden Rules of Journal Entry/ Accounting

Accounting is just one element of economic accounting. Every purchase in accounting has two access: debit and credit score. It is crucial to figure out which accounts should be attributed and which should be debited. This is the twin access accounting system.

The 3 golden rules of accounting are rules that control economic accounting. These golden criteria guarantee that monetary purchases are tape-recorded in an organized manner.

The golden rules reduce complex accounting procedures to a collection of concepts that are easy to understand, research study, and use. Right here are the principles of accounting with examples in detail.

Kinds of Accounts

Accounting's golden rules aid in the paperwork of economic purchases in ledgers. These golden standards vary depending upon the kind of account.

You might have become aware of the Golden Rule in life: Treat others as you wish to be treated. Yet, did you know that there's additionally a principle for accounting? Actually, there are 3 principles of accounting. And no ... among them is not treating your accounts the way you want to be dealt with.

If you intend to keep your books up-to-date and accurate, adhere to the three basic rules of accounting.

Golden Rules of Accounting

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu69fsP4N\_4

Check Video on 3 Golden Rules of Accounting

Adhering to are the 3 rules of accounting-.

1) Policy One.

" Debit what is available in - credit score what goes out.".

This legislation puts on existing accounts. Accurate reproductions include furnishings, land, buildings, machines, and so on. By default, they have an unfavorable equilibrium. They are debiting what is getting here in order to improve the equilibrium of the bank account.

2) Guideline Two.

" Credit scores the provider and Debit the Receiver.".

It is a regulation for personal accounts. When somebody, real or make believe, adds to the business, it counts as an inflow, and the provider has to be noted in the records. However, the receiver must be acknowledged. Consider buying a gift from a present shop. Your account will certainly be upgraded to mirror the deal.

3) Regulation 3.

" Credit all income and debit all expenditures.".

This law relates to nominal accounts. A business's resources is its commitment. It has a debt equilibrium. If all profits and earnings are attributed, the resources will certainly increase. When losses and prices are deducted, the funding decreases.

Do schools that offer free tuition (NYU/now Einsteins) base their tuition costs of student's parents income?

It's nice that certain high education institutions are offering free tuition, but it seems flawed if the hyper rich or those who can afford are going to school for free. This is especially true for medical schools where there is a high proportion of students whose parents are physicians and they seek to follow in their parents footsteps. I can understand the difficulty of screening based on parents income because it doesn't guarantee the parents are paying. On the other hand, blindly giving the already ultra rich free tuition seems absurd, especially at elite institutions where those who have unlimited resources probably have greater chances of entrance due to merit acquisition. is NYU or Einstein only offering free tuition to the socioeconomically disenfranchised or everyone?

I need help

I need to do revision especially in maths. I have no maths knowledge other then as far back as year 7. That’s it I have very poor memory sometimes looking for something for 20 minutes and finding out it’s in my hand I zone out quickly if I’m looking at something longer then 10 seconds and I’m really trying to revise and study in class but I can’t. I listen in class and everything but I can’t remember what I’ve learned after the lesson. I’ve learnt how to tell the time 6X but I forget the next day I’m nearing year 10 now and everything I’ve heard how to revise isn’t working, and I’m constantly getting headaches. Another thing to note is that I get hyper aggressive if I can’t get a question right or if i think I’ve made progress but actually haven’t, luckily I’m very patient with people and animals, but I really need help. Sorry if this a long paragraph.

Soap Made from the Ashes of Burned Books

Some ideas aren't acceptable to publishers, podcasts, YouTube channels, magazines, social platforms, or even pubs and universities nowadays. There are so many taboo areas in these dark "woke" times that it's quite hard to pick any topic without getting hurt or burnt. Even the basic scientific fact of two sexes isn't considered a fact anymore; it's viewed as an option. Our cowardice leads to a chasm of ignorance. Freedom of speech is not a privilege; it is a born right of everyone. But the time has come, and we have to fight for this right again.
Mower has created a soap made from the ashes of burned books. This soap is uniquely packaged inside the very books that have been subject to censorship.

When and how should new languages be taught?

My first chance to take another language in school was 7th grade. Most people I know from different parts of the country had similar experiences. Middle school is usually the first time public schools offer another language.

So much research and so many case studies prove that the earlier someone starts learning another language, the easier it will be to learn.

It doesn’t need to be a formal curriculum. Most schools could probably find a parent volunteer who speaks Spanish and can come talk to the kindergarten class for an hour a day. Those kids would be confused at first, but they would pick it up really quickly. It wouldn’t even need to be a different “lesson.” Whatever the kids would have been doing for that hour (maybe singing songs, maybe listening to a story and looking at pictures, etc.), they could just do it in Spanish instead of English. I would bet they’d learn a lot of Spanish in the course of that year.

And it doesn’t need to be Spanish. The same could be said about any language.

I’m just throwing this idea out there to brainstorm. What would be the pros/cons of something like this?

How hopeful are you about the movement to center phonics in early reading education?

For context: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/03/us/what-to-know-about-the-science-of-reading.html?searchResultPosition=5

I've been reading much more education reporting and journalism about the accelerating coalition and seeming consensus for the science of reading in schools over the past year and there seems to be a lot of optimism around this movement so far. Out of curiosity, I wanted to hear educators' perspectives on where they think the movement is at from their own observations and how much potential they think it has to improve literary over the short-term and long-term.

On that note, I also found this post below to be a really intriguing and thought-provoking commentary on how even if phonics is the superior method for facilitating literacy, it still needs to operate alongside the difficult constraints that would remain regardless to address larger structural issues in early education. I'm curious how much it resonates with educators here.

Schools to help with teacher well-being scale

My colleagues and I are former K-12 teachers working at Christopher Newport, George Mason, and Auburn University. We are developing a new teacher well-being scale. This short scale focuses on elements we have encountered in our research (workloads, teacher support, and burnout). We wanted to see if any school leaders were interested in allowing us to survey their teachers. In addition, we want this to go both ways, so we are happy to include questions that would give school leaders insight and share these results to support teachers.

The current survey would take teachers 5-10 minutes and would provide us with important data to continue developing our survey. We are open to any time during the spring and want to keep teacher workloads and stresses in mind when asking them to give 5-10 minutes of their time.

Education After the End of the World | Villageschooling

Education After the End of the World | Villageschooling

I keep being surprised by how few other people have heard about "Villageschooling" so I made a video talking about it. Not to be a bummer, but education is changing, and kind of quickly and in some unfortunate ways. I wanted to discuss a different framework that is nontheless familiar. Villageschooling pulls from ideas connected to democratic education, Montessori, CTE, and Modern Schools.

With how districts are moving towards charters, privatization, and the like, I am genuinely anticipating that there will be a new "Wild West" for education frameworks as things shake up, and I really, really hope Villageschooling is the "Good Ending" we get. Or.. I guess we could have more Prussian style schools.. That'd suck.

Play School cannot facilitate autistic son full time advice

Briefly, my son has been attending nursery for about 8 months now, he had a special educational needs worker there, but generally gets on well and keeps him self to him self, we worked with the play school to reduce his hours appropriately to allow transition, he does 2.5 hours a day. We trialed lunch 5 months ago but he wasn’t ready for this, he is now however well settled and changed he is more manageable and understands some words such as no.

We have since been trying to push to increase his hours to full time which is 30 hours a week.

Below is an email from the nursery, and my intended response - I’m looking for some Feed back on whether or not my response is appropriate I can sometimes be very to the point so always good to have a second thought.

Note - they recently failed an ofsted inspection However their SENCO wasn’t highlighted as a concern, and my eldest son also attended her who is autistic and went into mainstream school and is hitting all his targets. So I have no concern as to their report in regards to my son’s individual care.

Based in the uk not the states.

Nursery - We are emailing you with an update on our current staffing situation and the effect this has on your sons sessions.

Unfortunately, we are in an extremely difficult position at the moment whereby we are unable to enrol anymore new children who are entitled to funding, due to our recent Ofsted grading.

This has a knock on effect because it means that we are not receiving income that would enable us to employ another member of staff, which would in turn, would enable us to free up another member of staff to support him to be able to increase his sessions to include lunch club sessions. Lunch time is also when management cover staff to be able to have their lunch breaks.

We know that this is difficult for you as you are keen on increasing his sessions but we hope that you understand our reasons for being unable to accommodate this for you at the moment.

I believe that during your recent meeting with Blank explained that we were looking to employ another member of staff, however, we are not having much success in the recruitment process at the moment and we know that this is a nation wide problem but we have also recently discovered that financially, we are unable to manage expanding our team.

If our situation changes at any point, we will of course let you know and we can discuss an increase in his sessions but for now, we hope that you understand the difficult situation that we are faced with.

If you have any questions or anything you would like to discuss with us, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Proposed response -

Thanks for your email unfortunately as you can appreciate this news is disappointing.

I understand that your funding has been cut effecting your ability to be able to employ another member of staff, I also understand that a member of staff is on maternity leave however this is no excuse not to be able to facilitate someone who is already on your register.

I would understanding if my son was a new starter given your circumstances you could refuse him access to hours and I would accept that.

However he has been enrolled with you for some time now and always with the intention of taking him on full time. We have been more than flexible on adapting his hours to your recommendations to ensure smooth transition for both Finley and you his provider with the end goal of increasing those hours.

Per the ofsted report in December you are listed as being able to facilitate up to 60 children during this period You had 37 children enrolled which means you were operating at 61% your capacity two months ago.

Unless you are now operating towards full capacity I do not comprehend how you are unable to find means to facilitate him

As a result of your unfortunate circumstances Finley is now being denied access to his full entitled hours because it is understood he requires more support than other children.

He has every right to be in full attendance just as much as any other child in your care. But he is being treated less favourably and is now put at a disadvantage because of his needs related to his disability which is indirect discrimination.

If you do not have the appropriate means to fully facilitate a disabled child from start to finish then you should not be in a position facilitate at all.

To inform that you do not have the staffing to be able to increase Finley’s hours raises a major cause for concern if you are unable to facilitate him for more than 2.5 hours a day how can you be in a position facilitate him at all a concern which is only amplified if it is in fact the case that you are not currently operating at your full capacity.

My self and partner have showed understanding and have been more than happy to work with you until you could find a solution to the problems you have been presented with.

However the situation has now changed to the point where we as his parents need to question if his best interests are being met.

The last thing that me and partner wish to do is remove him from a setting in which he throughly enjoys and in which he has created a trusted bond with his SENCO worker.

Partner and I have come to the agreement his best interests are currently not being met or prioritised.

It is in his best interest to be in a setting that can facilitate him for as many of his hours as he can tolerate in order to give him the best chances of developing his social skills and of course in preparation for his eventual transition into schooling.

To which we consider time spent in a nursery setting a detrimental factor in increasing the likely hood of him being able to potentially attend a mainstream school.

Currently It feels there has been no real meaningful attempt to try to increase his hours and see how it goes, instead it now comes across that it’s easier to approach it as simply not possible due to the current circumstances you face.

If there is definitively no room for compromise or an appropriate time frame to which we can suitably addressed this then we will have no other option but to make the difficult decision to remove him from your care and put him in a setting that has the means to facilitate him allowing him to reach his full potential.

Testing practices and pedagogy.

I am nearly finished with my bachelor’s degree in accounting and I can’t help but continue to mull over testing methodologies and what is most conducive to student learning.

Among the teachers and professors, there seems to be a fairly uniform split between their views on testing practices, which, when stripped of nuance, breaks down to “easy test” vs “hard test” teaching methods.

If we are able to break the pedagogical process down into two distinct phases, they would be the “learning phase” and the “testing phase.” I am strongly of the opinion that the most difficult portion of the educational process should come during the learning phase, which includes the lecture and in-class problems, the reading, the homework, and the reflection writing assignments. By comparison, the test should be easy, but still difficult enough to separate the students who do not understand the concepts that were taught.

To put it simply, if the learning objectives for the students are to learn concept A and concept B, the test should not be the first place that students are expected to figure out that A + B = concept C. If it is important for students to know that A + B = C, that should have been harped on during the learning phase.

I have had both types of professors in all subject fields, and I cannot understand why a disconnect like this has not been ratified in terms of best practice.

In my calculus class, for example, the problems that we work in class are way more complex than anything she would put on the test. My accounting class is precisely the opposite. The lectures, in class problems, and homework assignments are stupidly easy, but then the test is an esoteric beast that most of the class fails.

Again, my argument is that the difficulty should come during the learning phase, and the test should be a regurgitation of concepts, not a field where hidden concepts are unearthed. I truly believe there are professors out there who do this on purpose as a way to “weed out” students who didn’t go the extra mile. But I do not think that this practice fosters the most amount of learning.

If only I could grade my own essay before submission

So I came across this Essay Grader AI and I think this might be a game changer. So teachers and lecturers use it to grade essays, that’s great and all but what if you could use it to grade your own essay before submitting, you would submit the perfect essay, don’t you guys think? So here is how it works, there is an AI detection tool so you can reduce the AI content to the minimum, you have a summarizer which you can use for summaries and you get to customize the grading instructions, this way if you know the rubrics your teacher uses for grading, you can just type them in and the tool will grade your paper based on that. What do you folks think?

For the love of graphic design, please stop having kids cut and paste essays onto poster board and call it a “project.”

At my school, too often teachers announce that students are going to be sharing their “projects” with other classes. We are invited to their class museum and inevitably, it is a room full of middle schoolers who have basically written essays and the glued them onto a piece of poster board along with a couple of photos.

Posters and museum infographics are such a rich and interesting field of communications, but it is almost always clear to me that the poster part of these projects is a complete after thought.

It ultimately feels like a waste of resources to used poster board and three panel displays if graphic design is not a significant part of the actual lesson.

Studying in Canada from Belgium

I want to study in Canada and live there when I’m older. I want to go to university/college but I don’t have knowledge about it at all.

I want to study film, writing, directing.

Is it expensive? Is it worth it? How much does it cost internationally to enter university/college? Is there an acceptance rate? Can I apply with Erasmus+? How hard is it, out of 10? 10 being highest. Which province provides the best film schools? Difference between college and university? Are there dorms? Or host families (if you have the website so I can apply)?

To raise up children or to get a Canadian passport, how hard is it? What do I specifically do? How’s the education system before university/college? Can an European easily transfer in Canada and live there?

The Good/Bad Paradigm

The functionality of our system is paradoxically rooted in dysfunction under this paradigm.

Consider this: if there were no 'bad' individuals, entities like law enforcement, military, and law itself would have no purpose. Therefore, the system relies on the existence of 'bad' people to justify its structures, creating a dysfunctional cycle where such individuals are both produced and needed for the system to persist.

Similarly, in education, if there were no 'bad' grades, conventional schooling would lose its raison d'être. The system thrives on grading individuals to sort them for colleges and employers, thus perpetuating a dysfunctional dynamic where success is often measured in comparison to others.

This framework fosters an environment of competition and division, pitting individuals against each other as 'good' or 'bad.' But to sustain itself, the system requires this dichotomy, leading to inherent dysfunction.

I present these perspectives for contemplation, urging you to consider how we might collectively work towards shifting this paradigm.

How can each of us play a role in dismantling this system of division and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society, a Unity paradigm?

River Frey’s dad died his freshman year in high school, sending him into depression. He went to live with his mom, who descended into dementia while he was in the 10th grade.

As he moved around, school did not top his agenda. For his junior year, he entered Pasco County’s Anclote High School with 7.5 credits — just over a year’s worth of high school — and a grade-point average barely above 1.0. Things didn’t go so well that first semester, either, recalled Kristy DePerto, a teacher assigned to help struggling students graduate on time.

He slowly started coming to class, encouraged by his new girlfriend. A year later, he had perfect attendance, completed his course requirements and graduated early. Now he’s contemplating whether to become a teacher.

His story is part of a larger trend as students across Tampa Bay, Florida and the nation are missing school at alarming rates.

About 31% of Florida students were chronically absent last school year — up from 20% in 2018, according to the state Department of Education. They are kids who have missed at least 10% of their classes. And while their numbers have started to shrink slightly, educators remain worried.

Read the report.

Ideas for a simple EdTech tool

Education is moving fast, technology wise. I am developer looking to build some simple tool that lots of people use (not searching for the next big startup idea).

Any ideas for tools? Or areas that are specifically burdensome? With AI a lot is possible now.

Posting below might also inspire other developers to build something useful. And might help lots of other teachers, students and support staff in the end.

Thanks

Good, approachable software for creating educational visualizations?

As title states.
May add I work on Linux and Windows.
Preferably free, but might be paid if it's worth it in your opinion.
I do not plan on creating anything complicated - just simple animations in minimalistic style to visualize concepts to make them easy to comprehend.

Thanks in advance for any answers :D

Early childhood educator Kendra West builds better beginnings in southwest Wyoming

In a state that suffers from a widespread dearth of early childhood education resources, Kendra West of Evanston, Wyoming proves facilities can expand to provide good education and valuable staff opportunities. She's fueled by a stubborn belief that kids and teachers deserve quality.

Here's how the EDC bucked the challenges that have left so many Wyoming communities with major gaps in child care and early childhood education.

Thoughts on an idea related to education

Im a student and I am working on a school project. I had the idea of maybe doing something educational through text. Maybe sending daily text about cool things, sending links to assignments, tests, tutorials etc. For people who are looking to be educated or having their kids learn more through texting since its the number 1 they are on, what do you guys think?

Increased School Choice May Improve Student Mental Health

A groundbreaking study co-authored by a Western Carolina University professor of economics indicates that increased school choice may result in improvements in student mental health, with fewer incidents of adolescent suicide and a lower likelihood of mental health issues later in life.

The study, titled “The Effects of School Choice on Mental Health” and published in the journal School Effectiveness and School Improvement, was the brainchild of Angela Dills, the Gimelstob-Landry Distinguished Professor of Regional Economic Development at WCU, and colleague Corey A. DeAngelis, education policy analyst at the Cato Institute’s Center for Educational Freedom.

For the study, Dills and DeAngelis collected data from 49 states covering a 40-year span (1976 to 2016), along with nationally representative data from more than 4,300 students who took part in the 1997-1998 cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Using the two datasets, they explored the question of whether school choice has an impact on the frequency of teen suicides and adult mental health problems.

School choice gives parents the opportunity to send their children to schools that may be better suited for their individual needs, personalities and learning styles, Dills said. In addition to performance in the classroom, the ability to choose a child’s school may also affect other outcomes, including mental health, she said.

Dills and DeAngelis used their compiled data to compare the changes in outcome over time among populations of students from different school settings, including public schools, charter schools, and private schools in states with voucher laws that provide parents with some or all of the public funding allocated to their children’s education and allows them to apply it to the cost of attending a private schools.

“What we found is that states that have passed charter school laws are seeing a drop in the number of adolescent suicides,” Dills said, estimating that the study found a 10 percent decrease in the rate of suicide among 15- to 19-year-olds. “In addition, in states that have adopted private school voucher laws, we saw a decline in teen suicides, but it was not a statistically significant change.”

The study also used survey data to examine the potential link between attending private schools and the prospect of mental health problems later in life, while taking into account an array of personal characteristics that individuals may have, including age, race, gender and socioeconomic factors.

“When controlling for these factors, our estimates suggest that private schooling reduces the likelihood that those students will go on to report having mental health issues as adults,” Dills said.

Decision regarding career

I want to get intro trades in Canada and i was thinking of either carpentry (because i like woodworking and cabinet making) or electrican as it pays well and is more demanding in canada right now, however i do like woodwork more than electrician because i have never tried it. I'll also be taking a diploma for either one job but i am confused in choosing this big decision. Which job should i go for and why?

Re-introduction of Algebra to SF Public Schools

I’m glad to see this. I have been working side by side with and supporting black engineers, female engineers, Latin engineers my entire career to this very day.

Wonderful talented people who excelled at higher math. Think of the movie ‘hidden figures’.

On the contrary, shortchanging people is a way of lacking faith in their abilities. Challenging people is a tribute to their innate human capabilities.

Need help with my decision , on what I should do after my gcses. APs or Alevels

I want to go to America. Gcses is a U.K ciriculum based thing which is usually 2 years. Then after that students do alevels which is another kind of qualification which is also 2 years. I was thinking if I should do AP’s after my gcses are done since I wanna go to America , also heard APs are a bit easier. But aren’t APs 4 years long? I’ve already done 2 years so another 4 years would be crazy. I was thinking to just do 4-5 APs in the span of 1-2 years and then send applications to colleges in America alongside my 7-8 gcses. Any advice tips or anything

Want to study abroad. Where to go?

Hello everyone, I'm currently studying in ukrainian physical-mathematical lyceum in 9th form. At the end of a spring I'm finishing base secondary school.

I want to finish late secondary school abroad, for example, in Poland, because by law, during war time it's forbidden for males older then 18 years to leave country. So if I do that in 16 years, it'll be alright. And I want to have career in Europe/America, because I want to be aerospace engineer, and in Ukraine it's very underdeveloped and low-funded sphere, compared to ESA or NASA. And nobody knows when war finishes, so it's quite a gamble to stay, as war can finish tomorrow, or in 10 years.

I know English decently, can learn other languages if needed. I'm good at performing most subjects, especially maths, physics, English, IT, a bit of chemistry and biology. If any entry exam is needed, I guess it won't be a big problem to pass.

Our family isn't very rich, so for year of studying $5000-$10000 is cap. We talked about that with my parents and they are not against it, even with it. Maybe I can work there, if possible.

We have friends who live in Warszaw, so that can be the place. Also my mom is scientist, and sometimes she goes on business trip to Brno, Chech Republic.

I want to study on some kind of engineering program, as you could guess.

I need advice, because I'm kind of lost in all of this educational stuff. Thank you very much for your help.

looking for an opponent of my bachelors project about self-harming and derealisation caused by education system

i study art and design at university, and i know that this may not be a very common post, however, im seeking someone who would like to write their opinion on my bachelors university project.

its non-linear diary story about self-harming and derealisation caused by education system. im also interested in slang language, internet language, automatic writing and re-designing language structure, which is second side of my work

i have discussed this project with many people – artists, writers and designers, however, they often focused on aspects like improving the production of my writing, which is a secondary thing for me at this point. They just often seem like they care more about how the project looks like and why i use certain font, rather than understanding the real content.

i have never talked with anyone who is actually interested in this topic or has some relationship with it. It would be valuable for me to receive an opinion from someone with an "inside view" in this area, though the school also requires at least a masters degree from opponents.

if anybody here would be interested or know some place where i could search, thanks you for sharing or messaging me! THOUGH please, im not looking for people who actively self-harm or can be triggered by this topic because the story describes in details how self-harming and derealisation looks like

at this point, the story is written only in czech language, however i could arrange english translation if i found a foreign opponent
thank u for reading

Looking for advice: Requesting Textbook Samples

I'm a teacher in a rural school district in Southern Illinois. Our current Biology and Chemistry textbooks are over two decades old (1996 and 2002 copyrights) and have been told by our principal that we have the okay to start looking for new textbooks. I've been looking at various publishers (Cengage, McGraw-Hill, Pearson, etc.) but haven't had much luck obtaining online samples. If anyone with more experience with this process like a curriculum director or educational coaches could offer some advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Improving My reading Comprehension

It's become painfully obvious to me that my reading comprehension is lacking. I don't absorb anything I read and often have to read out loud or reread a section multiple times to start being able to grasp whats being said. I lose the line I'm reading every now and then and have to pause to search for it again. I don't know what half the words I read mean or what they're reffering to. If someone starts talking or some sort of interruption happens I'll have to painstakingly restart the whole section because I got distracted. My mind often starts to drift mid reading and I end up not processing what I just read.

Outside of class its fine because I can read as loud as I want to and have all the time in the world to process and understand, but its become a huge problem in class for me precisely because I don't have those luxuries.

Today was especially bad. I was given a 5 page short reading and asked to identify the authors definition of a term and 3 key points of the paper and discuss with a group after. I didn't finish reading by the time group discussions had begun and felt that I was being left behind in the discussion. Through out the reading I didn't understand what the author was saying half the time, either because the way ideas were expressed/phrased was to complex for me or because there were multiple words that I didn't know the meaning of. I felt mentally lethargic and unfocused the whole time.

I didn't really get a full nights rest before class so most of my struggle today may be attributed to that, but I still feel that I'm not at the level my class requires me to be at.

What do you guys recommend I do? I really want to do something about it but I'm honestly at a lost right now. I obviously need to read more, but I don't know where to start, what to read, or how to organize my thoughts.

I can provide excerpts and examples from the paper that I simply didn't understand in the comments if any of you want.

Is there data that shows if U.S. teachers tend to have more children of their own than other professions?

Submission Statement:

An article featured in The Educators Room , "Teachers Who Are Parents," noted that about half of public school teachers in the US (48%) have children of their own.

I would imagine that number would jump if you included private school children, which the paper does not get into.

I did not know if this number was high or low compared to those in other professions. Millennial women seem to have children at a higher rate than is what cited above (I saw 55% as the number), but that is apples to oranges.

Other sources noted nurses and teachers were the most likely professions to include working moms ... which does not look at dads.

So there is a lot of overlap.

Is there clear evidence that all (private/ public teachers) pre-K — 12 have more children than the average American in other professions?

Civil rights complaint filed against a school district in Bonham, TX after Black students faced racially motivated attacks, reminiscent of Jim Crow segregation.

"During his first week of school, other kids taunted the Edwards’ 12-year-old son Brilliant, telling him to “go back and pick cotton.” Over the next year, he faced a series of racially motivated attacks by students, school officials, and police officers, resulting in his unjustified arrests and removal from school at the age of 13 in December 2022, according to allegations in a new civil rights complaint."

Michigan is now the first state in nearly 60 years to ditch the union-busting law.

Tweet from @MorePerfectUS

“Today Michigan is officially no longer a "right to work" state. Michigan is now the first state in nearly 60 years to ditch the union-busting law. Public school workers can now collectively bargain, it's easier for unions to build power, and billionaires are furious.”

What it means:

The image is a tweet from More Perfect Union stating that Michigan has officially ceased to be a "right to work" state. This means Michigan has repealed laws that provided workers with the choice to join or support a union as a condition of employment. The tweet also mentions that this is the first time in nearly 60 years a state has reversed such a law, implying that it could signify a shift in labor policy and union strength. Additionally, it is stated that public school workers can now more easily collectively bargain and that this is a positive development for unions but has angered billionaires, presumably because they believe it could lead to increased labor costs or challenge their influence.

advice on returning to college 27m

Hi so I'm 27 in the UK and looking to go back to college this september as I left school and college with very little qualifications (never went into higher education really) due to it being a rough time in my life mentally. Ive been working a low effort job in an industry I dislike for about 5 years now and am looking to change but the lack of qualifications are making it tough.

I guess what I want is to start an actual career and stop working these dull low paying jobs.

My question is are there any specific things I should focus on? I feel kind of lost as I never really had a life plan. Getting this maths GCSE is mainly just something that I feel like im making up for lost time. I did -really- enjoy maths as a subject I was just bad at tests and often buckled under pressure.

I've thought a lot about going back into education but not really about what to focus on. Are there any specific qualifications that are recommended for someone who still hasn't got their heart set on something specific and could be useful in multiple industries? Is there anyone who has been in a similar position that can give me some pointers?

Obtaining an engineering degree while working full time?

Hello,

To outline my situation, I am 28 years old and I spent the greater part of my early 20s doing drugs and partying. I chose not to go to college because I didn't think I would be successful due to my habits. Long story short, I got sober and found myself a decent job. I have been in the same role for about 3 years now. I have always had excellent performance reviews and have found a way to become pretty valuable.

I honestly never thought I would go to college but the company I work for has a generous tuition reimbursement program. The reimbursement program would essentially put me through an entire bachelor's degree (and masters if I wanted) for free. Since I stopped doing drugs, my free time has been spent watching TV and playing video games and it has been pretty unfulfilling. I have a pretty sharp mind and I can't help but feel like I should be using it.

Some additional info: -- I have to continue working full time for tuition to be covered. -- I have to obtain a b- or the course will not be paid for. -- I work graveyard on a compressed work schedule. This means I work 12 hour shifts and work 4 nights or 3 nights of the week alternating each week. -- My current role would likely apply as experience later on when applying for engineering roles in the same industry. -- I work in the semiconductor industry. -- I am an assembler (I build the big machines that process wafers) -- I am likely to become a test technician before obtaining a degree (more potentially applicable experience when applying for engineering roles)

So I guess my questions are: -- Does my current work schedule seem reasonable to start in on a degree? -- How long can I expect to be going to school for with the time I have available? 5 years? 6 years? 8 years (yikes)? -- What should my strategy be? Should I put a larger workload on myself while working on prerequisites? Maybe slow down as the courses get tougher? -- Am I overestimating the combo of experience in assembly/test + degree? Does my experience need to be in engineering to be valuable? -- I can imagine this will be difficult and exhausting. Realistically, what is the success rate for people that attempt to complete tough degrees while working full time?

How do I get grade 12u credits?

I'm in Ontario for reference.

I have already graduated a long time ago with horrible grades.

I went back to continuing education to fix my grades to get into nursing. During that time, I found out math and chemistry is pretty fun.

2 months in. I hate it so far. Everything interesting seems to require 12u credits.

I dropped out of pre health sciences twice, second time was because Durham college accepted my random request for the Rpn course.

I just can't bring myself to enjoy it. It's probably part of a mental issue I need addressed, but before that gets ironed out, my doctors appointment keeps getting declined and I've been waiting since 2022 to see a psychiatrist thats probably 2025.

But I'm side tracking.

How do I get 12u credits, and is it possible to get them without restarting all of highschool or should I just restart. I don't know what to do anymore, it's not like I can get any help anyways.

Fixing My High School GPA

I graduated high school with a 2.0, in 2021. I have realized since then how important education is to me, and really want to pursue a career in Prosthetics and Orthotics. I'm planning to retake the SAT and ACT tests in order to put myself back into the academic world, and am planning to do some base level standalone college courses online to help boost my GPA, since the Master's course requires a 3.0 GPA in the classes ill be taking. Am I missing anything important that would help me, or do I need to go a different route. I currently work in the CNC Machining industry as an apprentice, but am not qualified enough to be considered anything close to a CNC Machinist.

Career advice!

Hi everyone! A little background on me - I currently work in higher ed as an academic coordinator, and I have a masters degree in instructional design. I’m finding myself really wanting to connect and work with students more directly than I currently do, as well as possibly moving into a leadership role leading a team.

I’m looking specifically for an opportunity to connect with and help students one on one, maybe in an advising/counseling role. I’d especially love to work with first generation students.

My fear is the roles I’m drawn to aren’t going to pay well. I currently make $65K (in KY for reference) and don’t want to take a pay cut. Should I pursue additional degrees? I can get free tuition and have thought about a Masters in Counseling or Doctorate in Education. Is the job I’m searching for even out there?

Would love opinions!

Need advice on which school to anrol my kid

My daughter will be in high school.so as she nears college, I nned to get her to a reputable school to better prepare her. Here are my options:

Option a: Walking distance from our appartment but the curriculum is advance and rigid. I'm concerned that my daughter won't have time for anything else.

Option b: school adheres to the curriculum. Balanced school activities. They only accept 93 students per year so I have to enroll her early. They don't participate much to school contests though so they are considered in my city as an average school.

Option c: Balanced curriculum, walking distance from my parents house however the admin of the school doesn't like me that much because I reported her to the principal when I was in the 2nd grade. I'm afraid she'll take it out on my daughter.

Option d. Just let her stay in her current school even though I'm not sure it's the best for her.

My parents think option c is the best however I have experienced bullying by the teachers when I was younger so I'm trying to avoid that.

Coworker constantly interrupting my classes (GED teacher in corrections)

I (25F) work as a full time GED teacher in a medium security men’s prison. There are three other teachers in addition to myself. We have this one lady in her mid 40s who works as the placement specialist, yet acts as if her job duties entail supervising us teachers. When she’s not policing us around, she just sits at her desk and shops online and/or applied to other jobs.

This woman (call her A) does absolutely nothing for most of the day, except police everybody around. Our boss is gone 60% of the time as he works at different facilities, so she pretty much gets away with everything because of this. One day an inmate was not on the right call out list to be excused from his dorm (so that he could come to class), so while my inmate TAs and students were all gone to lunch, I followed typical protocol and walked down to the central gate to make sure the COs know to release him still. The CO acknowledges and makes a note, so I did my job and all is good. I turn around and A is right there. She then starts scolding me on how I “need to be in the classroom at all times so that way I’m there when my students return”, so I respond with an ‘alright’ and went back to my classroom.

Two weeks later, Ms. A ‘no call no shows’ the morning I get in to work. My boss was frantically looking for her bc the two of them had to travel to a mandatory meeting at a facility 30 min away. I asked the other teacher and she went on about how much she absolutely hates miss A and that surprise surprise miss A is the main reason my colleague is transferring to another facility 😂 She and I spent a good hour just spilling on how much we dislike her. Apparently she applied for one of our positions and the educational director refused to hire her lol.

A has also apparently gone around and tried to get each inmate worker fired. Our boss is too afraid to fire her himself bc he thinks she’ll file a discrimination lawsuit against him (she’s POC), even though she’s only been there three months and still has seven to go before she’s off probation.

I found out today that our other teacher is now also leaving. I have (since last week) started the paperwork to transfer to another facility bc I just CANNOT stand this woman and her false sense of authority. I’d be in the middle of class and she’d just barge in the room yelling at me about “making sure “ to do stuff (that’s not a part of my job at all). Right in front of my inmate TAs and students which is just highly inappropriate!

At this point I’m just hoping my boss grows the balls to fire her before I transfer out (I think it’ll be another two weeks before that happens). I’m just tired of going into work everyday with the threat of her fire breathing hanging over my head.

I’ve just had enough.

Classroom mgmt - discuss w class?

My lower level chemistry class is really starting to lose interest as the material is getting a little more complex in the second semester. They simply will not stop talking and the consequences I can enact seem to have no effect for a portion of the class. When I suggested to admin consequences like taking away phones for a day or not going on field trips, they essentially said, “no. We can’t do that.” Note: I have several other classes in different subjects / levels and they are fine. It’s just that 6-8 kids in this class don’t care about the consequences I can control.

So I’m thinking about having a sit down conversation with the class about how to make the classroom so that it can be more functional. Essentially say, “there’s a problem in that we can’t cover the material as class is functioning now so how can we solve this problem?”

I’ve never done this before though, so I’m curious if others have tried and what your suggestions would be to increase the chances of it working out well. Thx!

Piaget and Vygotsky's role in Cognitivism vs Constructivism

Grateful to anyone who can assist. I've found sources that state Piaget and Vygotsky's theories were the originators of Cognitivism and others that say they were originators of Constructivism. I've seen some statements that say Cognitivism and Constructivism are completely separate things and others that say that Constructivism evolved from Cognitivism.

My understanding is:

Piaget inspired Cognitivism, which he called Cognitive Constructivism. Vygotsky inspired Constructivism, also known as Social Constructivism. Cognitivism is associated with teaching learners how to learn effectively (with a curriculum that slowly builds on pre-existing student knowledge and techniques like mmemonics would coming under its purview) and the concept of students internalizing external information, while Constructivism is the idea that skills are developed through scaffolding, a teacher simplifying the teaching process through highlighting relevant information, visual aids, etc...

Is that correct?

Though it's also possible that Cognivitism, Cognitive Constructivism, and Social Constructivism are separate things? Or that Piaget and Vygotsky's theories were the foundation for both Cognitivism and Constructivism? Or that Constructivism is based on Cognivitism with some new elements added?

If you had a kid who was born a genius, would you treat them better than your other kids?

There’s a news article of a 9 year old genius from Pennsylvania who graduated high school and is attending college to study astrophysics. His parents started to notice that he was different from other kids when he was 2 years old. His mind seems to grasp everything. He is so smart that he skipped most of elementary school as well as the entirety of middle school. As for high school, he was homeschooled and managed to complete 4 years of schooling in just 2 years. He was only 7 when he started high school. Honestly if I had a a special kid like him, he would be my favorite child. I would constantly remind him of how special he is and how he’s going to grow up to change the world.

Parents never enrolled me into school

Pretty much the title. Please bear with me because this is a long, crazy story but I hope it makes sense.

I moved states when i was 12, and i was supposed to start 6th grade that summer. My parents never enrolled me. They said that the public schools were too dangerous, and they didn't want to homeschool me because my mom and dad lived at two different places so i was back and forth between houses, so they said it was too difficult. I was 12, I didn't understand why they weren't renrolling me.

This went on for years, as I got older i kept begging them to enroll me into school, but they never would. No family or anyone would help me because they kept telling everyone i was homeschooled, so no one questioned it.

My parents said that the school education system didn't work and I would learn better "life skills" in the real world and didn't want me to be "indoctrinated and brainwashed" by the school. I tried to enroll myself but I couldn't because i was a minor. By the time i was old enough to realize what was happening, i was afraid to tell anyone the truth because I didn't want my parents to get in trouble.

My parents forced me to miss middle school and high school and there wasn't anything I could do about it. Fast forward to now, im 20, i can't apply to any jobs because I don't have any highschool experience, i don't have anything to put on a resume, I don't have a ged, diploma, anything. i have no idea what to do with my life, it was stolen from me before i even got to live it.

Does anyone have absolutely any advice or any suggestions on what i can do about this situation? I don't even know how to get a ged because you at least have to have proof you dropped out or attended a school, I think. If anyone could suggest any help I would greatly appreciate it. This is a tough and random and unordinary circumstance but it's my real life. I am also no longer in this situation or living with them so I'm finally just trying to fix my life from this point. Thank you to everyone that took the time to read this.

Seeking Advice: Pursuing a Master's in Educational Policy to Foster Innovative Learning

I'm contemplating pursuing a Master’s in Educational Policy with the aim of contributing to the design, development, and implementation of innovative educational policies tailored for pre-K through 12 education.

My core belief is that empowering children to actively participate in their learning choices and process enhances their effectiveness and ignites a genuine interest in education. This approach necessitates fostering collaborative discussions among teachers, parents, children, and local jurisdictions.

In essence, my approach to educational policy is horizontal rather than vertical, emphasizing themes of optionality, mutuality, and flexibility.

My aspiration is to become a resource for others seeking guidance on how to design, develop, and implement such policies.

Do you have any suggestions on how I can work toward achieving my goal?

How to Run Independent Study Class?

I’m in a situation where high school students take courses using their Chromebook on Edgenuity.

The students are expected to work on their courses during the session. But, most of the students use it for socializing. They work at home and come in and talk to their friends.

Once they’ve completed the days assignments they feel they don’t need to continue working. They do just enough to stay on pace in Edgenuity.

Any ideas on how students can be kept on task and working on their courses?

Help me Attend Stanford!

I am honored to share that I have been selected by my University to atttend the Stanford Summer International Honors Program 2024. I got selected from a competitive pool of around 100 of the top students, and a rigorous selection process including an application process, presentation, and interview where students were evaluated based on their academic standing, extra-curricular experience, and how they've spent their time at university and outside.
Stanford ranks at #2 Globally, so what once seemed like an impossible opportunity now is within arm's reach. Right now, costs are the only obstacle standing in between me and this once in a lifetime opportunity. The program and travel costs amount upto $18649, and my university has generously offered me 50% of this cost ($9324) based on my merit and need, which shows that it considers me a valuable investment for this opportunity. However, I still can't afford the remaining costs, and am looking for financial support to cover this cost. I will be extremely grateful for your support in connecting me with potential sponsors.
For further details, please view my attached proposal which can also be found in the link here: https://drive.google.com/.../1U1ZgMXUZ8ipYqVRaQiQ.../view...
Thank you!

I get bored in class but study similar subjects at home with passion

I’m in my 2nd year of university (studying a very broad program that includes economy, law, sociology, history, management) and I don’t take pleasure in studying or working on those subjects for the most part (I like a few classes). When I’m sitting in a lecture or a more personal class I get bored and either start day dreaming or just doing something else on my computer. However, I’ve always been intellectually curious and actually really enjoy reading (fiction, non-fiction, articles, research papers), listening to history/scientific/philosophical podcasts, debating people about various subjects, doing research on subjects I find interesting (sometimes similar to the ones I’m studying in school).
I’m wondering if everyone feels like this and I just need to suck it up, I’m not as intellectually curious as I thought I was or maybe if the university ?

Furthering Education - Grade 8, Middle School

I’m in the 8th grade and trying to further my education past my grade level, I am also trying to gain general knowledge, such as history, geography, and (mostly) basic science topics.

Right now my strongest point is math, and i can easily grasp concepts as long as i have a formula or examples to work with. English isn’t complicated for me at all, I just don’t have the largest vocabulary.

All of my classes are easy to get through and understand, theres never really been any trouble learning things yet, so I want to learn about topics that I will be learning about in the future beforehand to have more time for myself instead of studying

^ I’m not below average or average, at least in learning new topics/intelligence, but I feel I just don’t have enough knowledge.

Besides just wanting to get through school more relaxed, I want to further my education outside of school just for general knowledge and any future opportunities requiring knowledge on certain topics.

i would appreciate any advice to what I should learn and how I should continue to improve, as well as any links to websites, recommended books or authors, or youtube channels would be appreciated

I am 19f, have not been in education since I was 12. I'm looking for some support, advice or guidance..!

  • my situation is, my mom is mentally ill, she has bipolar but always needed to be cared for by either a carer or family member, she wasn't really in a good place to guide me due to it all. And my father died just after I turned 13, it was hard and quite traumatic (he was diagnosed with cancer when I was 12) so for a couple of months, I basically watched him fade away and die. Along with that I carried guilt, because I felt so bad for my mom and other family members. For the following years it seemed normal staying home and education not really being a "priority. "

Also, I think a big factor was also this: the women in my culture usually don't stay in education after high-school, they stay home and eventually get married (the man provides) I wanted more than just that... And I didn't think too much about things, for some reason I always thought I'd be okay, I did think one day I'd get into something but I didn't exactly have a "plan"i just" knew" idk..!

I think it was just normal for me to not go because to alot of the people in my culture, I was used to all of that so it wasn't anything out of the blue. And I didn't have parents guiding me with these things. , It was "normal" (alot of the women in my culture get pulled out before high-school starts.) I don't agree with alot of it, in fact I don't want to live my life the way I'm "expected" but when I was younger I guess I didn't think much of some things because it was "normal" I still have understanding for the people who live that way (people from my culture, and some other people from other cultures seem similar, I guess it's just old fashioned and traditional). Luckily I was "different" and I didn't really become like most of them, I don't plan to marry into the culture either. I also don't feel like marriage is a necessity, all I know is, I want to fix my situation and get on the best path, and have some stability. And I want to become a hairstylist ASAP.

Long story short I am now worried about things and feel scared, I don't exactly know what to do to help myself, I did post months ago and I got support but I didn't go through with anything... I keep losing hope! I want to have some stability and hope that I'll be okay and that there is something for me. 🥺

I'd also like to add I'm 18,but 19 in 3 months.

Semester hours? TEXAS

Hello all! So quick little bio about myself, and I’ve never told anybody this.

So im late 20’s, just obtained my GED a few days ago, got the transcripts and everything. Very proud of myself, even tho it took almost a decade. I still did it.

I’m looking into law enforcement jobs and a few of them list (12 semester hours) with a GED. Only issue is, I have no idea what a semester hour is, or how many classes, how long that would take. I do want to emphasize I want to achieve my bachelors degree at one point, but for now, would love info from people that are familiar with Texas credits, semester hours etc.

How long would it take for a part time student to achieve 12 semester hours quickly? Advice?

Thanks!

Edit: I do have an appointment with a school advisor this upcoming Monday, just wanted to get some early info”

Teacher who showed Muhammad cartoon lives in hiding 3 years later

A teacher who prompted protests in a small Yorkshire town after showing his students a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad remains in hiding nearly three years on and is unlikely ever to return home, his family say.
The man, who was head of religious studies at Batley Grammar School in West Yorkshire, presented a drawing taken from the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo during one of his classes, provoking several days of demonstrations outside the school gates.
He was put into police protection after allegedly receiving death threats and now lives with his partner and four children under an assumed name in a secret location outside Yorkshire.

Gerontology?

Hello!
I am currently in my last semester for a bachelors of science in Human Services. I am undecided if I want to continue my education with a masters degree. I've found some Masters in Gerontology and Post Bachelors Certificates in Gerontology but I'm not sure if I want to pursue them?. I currently work at the department of social services in the Medicaid department but would like to eventually transition over to the adult services side. I have a strong passion for working with older adults because I was raised by and lived with my grandparents. I've watched them struggle, as I've gotten older, with the growing technological world and learning how to navigate it. I've watched my grandfather struggle with finding resources available to him after my grandmother passed from cancer last summer. It tears me up to know and witness first hand the problems that the elderly face with just trying to survive these days.
My original goal and path was to go into medical social work after having experienced set backs and lack of general care when my grandmother was sick. I didn't want to see anyone else's family members go through that if they didn't have the strong advocacy that we gave her. I don't think social work will be feasible though as I am unable to complete the necessary internship hours required while working a full time job. I'm also not sure that I need to have a degree in social work in order to give assistance to seniors, provide them with resources, act as an advocate, and just....care? Do you have any advice for me? Would either of them be beneficial to me? Should I look into something else?
