Direct quotes from the Heritage Foundation Project 2025 "Mandate for leadership" im regards to science research, funding etc...

  1. Quote: "Funding for scientific research should not be controlled by a small group of highly paid and unaccountable insiders at the NIH, many of whom stay in power for decades. The NIH monopoly on directing research should be broken." (Page 462)

Potential Ramifications: This proposal could lead to a fragmentation of scientific research funding, potentially reducing the consistency and quality of research projects. It may result in states having different priorities, leading to a lack of coordinated national efforts in critical scientific areas. This could disrupt ongoing projects and diminish the ability of the U.S. to compete globally in scientific advancements.

  2. Quote: "Several ORD offices and programs, many of which constitute unaccountable efforts to use scientific determinations to drive regulatory, enforcement, and legal decisions, should be eliminated." (Page 438)

Potential Ramifications: Eliminating key offices and programs within the EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) could severely hinder environmental and public health protections. This action may lead to weakened regulations and oversight, increasing the risk of harmful pollutants affecting ecosystems and human health. The scientific community could view this as an attack on evidence-based policymaking.

  3. Quote: "Finally, HHS should create and promote a research agenda that supports pro-life policies and explores the harms, both mental and physical, that abortion has wrought on women and girls." (Page 462)

Potential Ramifications: The promotion of a research agenda focused on pro-life policies may shift funding away from other critical health research areas, such as reproductive health, cancer, and infectious diseases. This focus could undermine the perceived neutrality of scientific research, potentially leading to biases in funding and research priorities that do not align with broader public health needs.

  4. Quote: "The Office of Science should...return to its primary mission: nonpartisan and basic science. SC’s mission should be international leadership in basic and early applied science and provision of world-leading facilities for this work." (Page 394)

Potential Ramifications: Emphasizing a return to "basic science" could reduce support for applied research, which is essential for translating scientific discoveries into practical technologies and solutions. This shift might slow down innovation and the development of technologies that address societal challenges, such as climate change, renewable energy, and health advancements. The scientific community might see this as a narrowing of the scope of research that could hinder comprehensive scientific progress.

These quotes and the proposed actions could significantly impact the scientific community, particularly in areas related to funding, research focus, and regulatory science. The potential ramifications include reduced scientific innovation, diminished public health protections, and a possible shift towards ideologically driven research agendas.

junior year hs classes

hey everyone! i'm a rising high school junior at a rigorous college prep school and need some advice -

for a little bit of background, i've been at this school since 5th grade and love it. i've taken art classes throughout my other two years of high school and have fufilled my fine arts credits. i want to go into something science related - thinking pharmacy or maybe dentistry.

up to this point, i've taken all the standard classes for my grade (ex. biology, algebra 2, geometry, english, etc.)

however, when we get to junior year we get to start taking APs and advanced classes. this year i am taking precal, AP Lit, AP Chem, Latin 5 and honors world studies (the history and language are standard for my grade)

i am missing one period in my schedule that needs to be filled...was going to take APES along with AP Chem but since it was my second science choice it has already filled up.

my only options are art classes and photography classes - will those look okay on my transcript? is it okay to still be taking art classes in my junior year? i really enjoy it, but not sure if they care all that much about my interest if i'm not planning to major in it?

and for reference, im taking Bc Calc, AP Bio, Greek, and anatomy and physiology my senior year along with some seminars.

Studying a second major after I graduate: is it a good idea?

Hello. I'm not a native speaker. Apologies for any mistakes I make.

Next year I (21M) will be finishing my major in Literature. I chose it because I value an education in the humanities, I am passioned about the discipline, love to read and think, and I'm very good at it. Of course, I've always been fully aware that the job prospects of it are not as good as other majors, but my interest in it was very strong and still is.

As the end of these 4 years is quickly coming by, I'm starting to contemplate what to do after university and I'm feeling quite lost. There are many options I'm considering, and I'd like to ask for some advice.

I'm considering majoring in Law after I finish my current major. This doesn't mean that I regret choosing my original major. Rather, I believe that getting a second major could give me many advantages, including broadening my career paths, having a better CV, and of course all the benefits education provides.

However, this decision could also have some drawbacks. I'm not from the US nor from a country where a Literature or English student could get into law school; I'd have to study Law for 4 years (it's a serious time investment) as another major. Meaning that when I potentially finish, I'd be 26 years old, with below-average job experience, and I'm wondering if that could be a serious problem. The good part is that in my country I don't have to worry about college debt.

I was wondering if somebody here had any experience doing something similar, or had any insight on this topic.

Thanks!

Which community organisations do you have that deserve more praise/attention/funding etc in terms of education?

Was recently informed of some groups in California which offer extra curricular activities, emotional support, specialised tuition etc etc and it sounds like their work makes a big difference. Are there any others in your local areas which are helping young people flourish?

Could smaller class sizes make a difference for students and education quality?

Disclaimer: This text is enhanced using ChatGPT. While the ideas are mine, I'm using ChatGPT to help clarify my points. Apologies if the use of ChatGPT is annoying.

I've been thinking about how class sizes impact learning. Back when I was in school, there were 32 students in my first year elementary class and 19 students in the last school year. I believe a maximum of 7 students per class would create a better environment for both mental and social development.

This approach could mirror university settings where students are split into smaller groups for certain lessons. For classes requiring active participation and grading, limiting the group size could bring several benefits:

  • Less chance of students feeling excluded, with reduced competition and bullying.
  • Less interference from disruptive students and reduced teacher bias.
  • Easier to make friends, adapt, and stay motivated with less stress.
  • More effective management of problematic students and early identification of issues.

Smaller classes could also make it simpler to track performance and address problems early, whether with students or teachers. Of course, this would need more resources, more teachers, and strong management skills. P.S. I really do understand that in current society this is highly unrealistic, and I'm not trying to suggest a new groundbreaking idea, but trying to understand fundamental flaws in current education models independently from some factors such as lack of funding.

Despite the challenges, I think the benefits could be significant. What do you think? Could smaller class sizes improve outcomes, and how might we tackle the challenges?

Bite-sized learning to avoid doom scrolling

Hey all, a friend and I have noticed that we've been spending a lot of time doom scrolling on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube rather than reading or learning, which both of us want to do but lack consistent motivation to do so.

We're avid fans of Duolingo and what they've has done for language learning and wanted to recreate that for ourselves. We were initially interested in Philosophy and Economics, so we've given a shot at making something similar. We are opening this up for more people unomo.app, to see if this is useful to anyone else, it has been for us and we are continuing to add more things to keep us motivated.

Famous jumping off point

I have an intuitive sense that there's a benefit to talking about something well known as a jumping off point for teaching about the more obscure. I'm specifically writing a lesson about Columbian mammoths and I think it'd be good to start with woolly mammoths and make comparisons, but I think the principle is broadly applicable. Can anyone recommend specific studies supporting or refuting this idea?

Old records ?

Hi all I have a question. Back in 11th grade I had an issue where I was depressed and maybe suicidal. Because I was getting bullied. But I talked to my counselor and I had to fill out some sheet with my feelings etc. but I never got on meds or went to the doctors. I talked to my parents then I was fine the next day. I just needed a mind break. I was wondering are those file still on my high school records or are they gone. This happened in 11th grade and I graduated 2020. So it’s been 4 years since I graduated. I hope those are not on my file because I have a job that I’m applying for. Someone let me know.

Ready to become a Firefighter. To serve and to protect, no matter what sacrifice it takes.

At the age of 33, I will begin my firefighting journey in the state of Tennessee. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" is quoted. Also, 9/11 is what inspired me to want to partake in this firefighting journey. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life since I’ve entered the workforce 17 years ago at the age of 16. Now, I’m set. I cannot wait to learn, study and to gain insight as to what I’m eager to pursue. Wish me luck. Thank you for reading and for your support.

What needs to change about the US Education System

First off, please don't respond with 'everything'. We know there needs to be an overhaul and teaching is no where near as effective as it should be, attainment gaps, disadvantage plague the system etc etc.

But if you were in charge of Educational policy here in the states, what would be some of the changes you'd look at immediately implementing? Which ones would you build towards overtime? Where and who would you take inspiration from? I'd love to hear some insights :)

... sorry, forgot to put a ? in the title and now can't change it. This was intended as a question!

When I say flunked I mean flunked, barely passed. The reasons behind it are lack luster so I won’t mention them but I’ve had a semi recent revelation that I need to get my shit together. My goal is to make as much of an academic comeback as possible so I can get into a decent college. My absolute dream would be UW or the cougars. But I understand how hard it’ll be. I experienced a great deal of physical abuse as well as bullying after being transferred to an alternate provision.

I was first placed in an alternative provision for a six-week period during which I endured severe physical abuse and bullying. One student even threatened me with a knife in the school kitchen, and the teacher did nothing but watch. Things got worse until the day I was to be released from the alternative provision, at which point they decided to severely beat me.

The following week, I went back to my regular school, where I was met with a lot of high hopes. Because of the trauma, I was unable to function normally and was falling behind in my studies. Eventually, my principal had enough and decided to send me back to a different alternative provision, but the abuse and bullying continued to the point where I had to be hospitalised.

Alternative provisions usually has gang members and violent bullies that attend I witnessed teens smuggling drugs and weapons into the schools and gang members loitering after school to pick up their friends. I used to skip school since the atmosphere made learning too dangerous for me, as violent bullies and members of gangs frequented those establishments.

Higher Education is Dead and effectively Worthless

I retired early recently, and bored decided to study something I've always had a passion for... filmmaking, across two separate HE Institutions.

Now I already have a couple of Degrees (BA, MA, MSC) from 30y ago plus I've worked 25 years in a field that requires constant updating of my skills and knowledge of my specialism. So I'm no stranger to academia and self directed research and study.

My new studies required me to do some prerequisite (compulsory) modules in Media and Commications, followed by modules in Editing and Animation software, amongst others in Cimetography and Film Studies.

I'm shocked at how badly taught these all (other than the last module) were taught. Everything is now Laptops, PCs, Smart Phones and scripted webpage lessons with procedual videos (some ripped strait from YouTube).

The lectures read strait from the script and do everything possible to avoid debating points with students (no seminars or tutorials anymore). Having an original idea or perspective on a topic and they are nothing but negative... don't dare think of anything your lecturer hasn't been able to think of themselves (or maybe that was just me?).

The courses preparation and marking is disorganised, baldy scheduled and frequently late.

I've been a FE teacher and a software trainer in my career, and when a practioner is rushing through a complex software package (they probably know extremely well) without pause for breath or checking their class for feedback that they are following at the same speed....thats a bad instructor.

I've got stuck on finding menus or the software has crash, and the lecturer is on the next chapter by the time I'm back on point. Glacing around the room I see I'm in the same boat as 80+% of the class. When 60% of you class walk out of an auditorium because their totaly lost and your not bother, there is something seriously wrong.

'Oh well' they say, 'you can work though the exercises in your own time by following the videos'... well then l could do that at home for free watch YouTube at my own pace....so why am I paying them thousands $ for that?

I don't feel that Higher Education as it currently stands, is usless and certainly not value for money. The 'lecturers' are just ticking boxes and pushing as many gullible youths through their doors as they can.

The current crop of students' acquired 'learning' is not going to help them get a job in a related field, let alone a career. Its not just worthless ,its also going to burdens them with decades of debt at the same time.

If i had children of my own i would strongly try dissuade them from going to HEdu, unless on a full scholarship in in a reputably technically program via an apprenticeship or other.

Hell, I'd rather they be a plumber or an electrician rather than wast 3-4 years on this rubbish at an vitality important stage in their lives.

The only purpose i can see for Higher Education these days is to keep lectures in employment as they unsuited to work in the fields they claim to teach.

Nursing programs in Rhode Island

I’m sorry If this post is in the wrong place.

I’ve been a little stuck on whether I should get my nursing associates at CCRI nursing program or New England Tech nursing program…. I’ve heard good things about both as well as some cons. Both are competitive. I think CCRI is less money/more affordable. NET is shorter by 3 months. This would be my first year (freshman) at a college/university. I have not taken any prerequisites. If anyone has a recommendations or experiences at either or others not mentioned above, anything would be much appreciated. Some people are telling me CCRI. Others are saying NET. I don’t REALLY understand the difference of the two.

lying about age for online schooling

hypothetically, what would happen if you faked your age on an online schooling program to get a diploma early, then finish a college course online with the diploma and money. if they find out, how can they take back those certificates? I plan to work online mostly anyways, so i could use pics of those certificates. im 15. dont plan on living long, but i do have financial goals before i off myself. I always try and find shortcuts but 70% of the time I leave empty handed, so Im wondering if someone on here could help. If i cant do this I want to find an online school and see if they can accelerate me normally, if my grades would allow me. Im earning 1k a week doing sketchy online work and have been saving to afford courses. If i cant start courses im using the money for a nose job.

Students Research Groups in Uni

Hi. I very recently applied to some technical uni. I chose applied math in math faculty. Here's my question: Is it possible to join and engage in student research groups on other faculties like mechanical or electrical. I mean do people get approved since on math faculty you learn basically math and you don't know almost a single thing about mechanics, electricity etc. I'd like to join some student research club, do things, have fun, have better chances of getting great job after I graduate but I think I'll change my study field to something else if such thing isn't possible. I couldn't find such info anywhere else

Online school vs In person school?

So I'm currently in the situation where I've been online for around 2 years, primarily due to me not being able to work well with other kids and thing in the past that I don't want to get into; I'm curious whether or not I should start re-attending standard high school. However, I'm already doing great online and getting great grades. My social skills may be lacking but I'm not sure/don't think so, as conversations go pretty smoothly I'd say. I have an offer to go attend a prestigious high school, and wanted to know if its better for me to attend a prestigious high school, potentially have grades suffer but build connections, Or stay online and take some clubs from schools around me? Which would look better for perhaps college applicatons or increase social interactions?

Young music teacher

Hello,

I am 17 years old and recently was given an opportunity to teach drums to a 7 year old. I have never taught anyone this young (or really taught anyone at all, other than my peers). Do you have any advice for a beginner teacher and someone who wants to enter the music education sphere? It does not have to be music related, just any tips for teaching, especially relating to young children. Thank you!

We all know that research can be a long and complex process, but I'm curious about your thoughts and experiences. Do you think there are areas where we could improve efficiency? Are there specific challenges you've faced in your own research projects?

A Remarkable School-Choice Experiment

Jerusalem Demsas: “In 2012, Los Angeles Unified School District set up an experiment. It offered parents in some parts of the city a new option: Instead of automatically sending their middle schoolers to their neighborhood high school, parents could instead pick between a few high schools in their area. ~https://theatln.tc/hMPFbj8U~

“School choice is usually about providing parents an option outside the traditional public-school system. From 2010 to 2021, public charter-school enrollment in the U.S. more than doubled, even as states across the country have made it easier for parents to use public funding for homeschooling and private-school options.

“But Los Angeles did something different. It recognized the growing appetite for choice and wondered whether the normal public-school system could help satisfy it. The experiment was the sort ripe for an economics paper and, thankfully, someone took notice. Economist Christopher Campos’s paper reveals that when public high schools were forced to compete for enrollment, achievement gaps narrowed, and college enrollment took off.

“In today’s episode of Good on Paper, I talk with Campos about why students improved in this new system, and we grapple with tough questions about school segregation, the no-excuses model, and the role of principals in student outcomes.”

What advice do you guys have for an educator?

Hi. I'm a Gen Z guy from Virginia who, at 22, is about to complete an M.Ed. in Elementary Education K-6 degree this July (I have done 3 practicum experiences in elementary classrooms, & will need to do student teaching or internship). I also have a BA in History and AA in Liberal Arts. I graduated high school in 2020. I have been substitute teaching for 2 years. I have applied to 150+ positions, had 16 interviews, and 3 job offers (1 I accepted to sub every day at a MS)

Since last night, I have been panicking, because I learned that for any reason, teachers could be nonrenewed contract-wise, even if they do well. What sort of tips or advice do you guys have for me as a younger educator? Also, what other career options would I have with my above qualifications (History &/or education)? (I don't have experience in anything other than education/teaching as of this post). Also, what would it take to be an administrator of any kind within a school district in the future? This kind of matter stresses me out sometimes. One more thing, is joining a teaching union really beneficial? Thanks for your help guys!

Department of Education Elimination Ramifications

Hey! So I'm coming to terms with the fact Trump might become president... :/ I have a daughter, and besides being worried about a whole lot of other stuff for her, I'm worried Trump may actually abolish the department of education. what are the ramifications of this? Both my husband and I work. I just assume we'd have to scrape up everything we can to send her to private schools because charter schools are a bit shady imo. What are some other ramifications and is it really possible to eliminate the department of education?

The engineering colleges where you take admission to learn about engineering, technology and innovation. These same college are now forcing you to learn about ancient languages and poetries. NEP(New education Policy) which was made to let students follow there passion and learn there interests, is now being used to teach students unnecessary curriculum which will not be usefull in the Engineering field in the future.

How can I make my course stand out

Hi everyone,

I live in Central asia and I'm planning to create an English course and help local kids with their college applications. I'm passionate about providing quality education and support to students here, but I'm looking for some advice on how to market my program effectively and make it stand out from other schools.

Here are a few things I'm considering:

  1. Personalized learning plans for each student.
  2. Comprehensive college application assistance (essays, recommendation letters, interview prep, etc.).
  3. Utilizing social media and a professional website for promotion.
  4. Collaborating with local schools.
  5. Hosting free workshops and seminars to showcase our methods.
  6. Sharing success stories and testimonials.

I'd love to hear any tips or experiences from those who've done something similar or have expertise in education and marketing. How can I make my course unique and attractive to students and parents? Any advice on effective marketing strategies would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Why isn't basic etymology taught in English class, and why is math history ignored?

This is one of my biggest issues with my education.

In English, kids will gripe about some stuff doesn't makes sense, why some words don't follow rules, why phrases exist, and just laugh at the general chaotic nature of English as a language. But as soon as you start talking about etymology and explaining the reasoning behind why things are the way they are, where it came from, and how it evolved, suddenly everything makes sense. Adding an etymological context to any amount of English information is a super easy thing to do, can be done within seconds, so it's not like it's actually taking time out of any other curriculum

My other gripe, however, might would take more time, however I believe it would increase math literacy exponentially.

I remember how often class would start and the teacher would just write a formula on the board and THATS THE WHOLE FUCKING LESSON. That. Just the formula.

So of course students are going to moan and groan about what it's even for, yeah. Because there's no fucking context. What the hell does this do?

If all you teach is the formula and not where it came from, why its important, what it can be used for, what the context is, you're not even really teaching the formula.

I excelled greatly at math over my peers, especially things that are grounded in a specific context, like geometry, chemistry, and physics. I was in AP physics and AP chemistry (which can be math heavy sometimes). In these classes they usually teach the history surrounding things that are significant, the problem at hand when it was developed, and what it's actually being used for.

In the generic math classes and algebra, they just write formulas on the board and threaten to write students up for asking why they need to know it. Like, how many people do you know personally that know that algebra evolved from an Arabic word, and that we use Arabic origin numerals? This seems like such a basic and fundamental thing to point out that just never gets taught.

I make this complaint because as the math they teach in school gets more and more complex at younger ages, they're going to hit a wall with potential education if they cut more and more context.

Home education vs home schooling?

Could you all help me think through this philosophical distinction I’m trying to get at?

So, personally, I want to send my kids to the neighborhood public school, but I also don’t want to be like “off you pop, see you in seven hours,” and compartmentalise education as something you do over there, with those people. I recognize that there’s a lot of learning that takes place at home, and it’s want to be more intentional about how I provide that.

So some of this home education is like homework, both required from the school and not. Reading logs from school might be an example of the former and bedtime read aloud time of the latter. It seems like some of the responsibility of home educating is connecting with teachers about what we need to do at home to carry what they are learning over into our home. Bridging I guess. (And, to be cynical, sometimes correcting.)

Another aspect is providing resources that just won’t be taught at the public school, either because of time restrictions or liability. For example, in the US almost no elementary schools teach swimming, even though not drowning is a pretty useful skill. Some of this learning is addressed through extracurriculars (eg swimming lessons at the Y), and could be in the family (eg dad showing you the steps of the breaststroke at the hotel pool). I’d love to not just off load all this learning to extracurricular instructors, partially because I feel like I have precious little time with my kids through their childhood, but of course I recognize that there’s lots that I can’t teach.

Anyway, I guess what I’m trying to figure out is what components my home educational philosophy needs to address and how to do it well.

I obviously don’t want to be all-work-and-no-play, but learning is fun. I want to do the scattershot, play education like going to the art museum one day of vacation and the natural history museum the next, but I feel like there’s benefit from something more structured, like a family book club or taking an online class together or something.

To keep it short and simple : the children that frequent our school are refugee children. We help them learn the new language and give them time to get familiar with the new surroundings (etc.) to get them ready for regular school. I would be interested in books talking about early childhood education, educating refugee children and if anyone has good recommendations about teaching young children with autism, with traumas etc. I would be very thankful😊

Young middle school student and trying to get my grant for private school accepted.

The public I've gone to for a short amount of time is full of drugs, the staff, collectively don't care, neither do the police. The place I live sucks, I've tried to get my parents to move someplace where I can grow up safely. They have no real remorse for my situation as someone who needs a high grade education. I'm looking to work in engineering, specifically mechanical engineering. I think this over a lot, and also enjoy the loop of designing and putting forward with something, which is similar to the engineering work loop. It's something that I can realistically get into. I am a highly intelligent and knowledgeable person, I also am diagnosed with aspergers and I'm not in the same mentality as my classmates. I have had a really bad experience with this school, and I've begged my parents for private school, they've been trying to get a grant, I sit in dread hoping they will give us enough for at least one school year. Back to the school I was in just before summer, it is insanely unprofessional, I find myself listening to the rants of teachers about their past relationships, I also have been accused of avoiding unfinished testing from missed days, I tell them "You have never given or notified me about said paper" and they respond by rushing manically to find paper on that missing work, I say "Can you not give it to me then?" they reply by saying I should have it. They don't know about my diagnoses and think I'm trying to be disrespectful when I talk to them mannerably, due to the harsh manner of the majority of the students they talk to. Overall the school is terrible and doesn't provide the right education for my future.

My questions:

1: Is there anything I can do to guarantee this grant?

&

2: If I do get sent back to the school spoken about, how do I tell people that I need a better education.

  • Thank you.

Curricular devloper - Financial literacy job offer, help?

What do I need to know? I'm a fresher. They've called me for an interview and I've bachelor's in finance, the job on paper sounds very suitable to me cuz I love research, analysis, planning, helping and continuous learning.

And as far as the details are concerned they've asked me to make PPTs on the topic they'll be giving to me, to see if I can do this or how proficient I'm w making PPTs, what do I need to know about this job? I don't think I've actually been so interested to work in something as much as this job description matches me but I also may lack creativity required, but at the same time I do have an urge to teach/get into something where I can distribute my knowledge, like consulting or something while learning more. Crafting curriculars sounds good in a way I'll keep crafting stages of learning but what else do I need to know, will I be making PPTs? After communicating w the teachers what kind of PPTs they'd like w the pictures? What should be the quality, are there any standards for that? Will I get time to research on how to proceed w the topics?

New Teacher Advice…

Hi cool teachers, Advice on work/ life balance. Seeking feedback about what position would be best for brand new multilingual teacher coming from fine arts/music teaching in New York. I’m anxious about managing my time and creating lesson plans. (Have 2 kids under 5) I recently interviewed and I’m waiting to hear back from three schools. Some have a push-in/ co-teaching model where I’d be modifying existing curriculum. Others have a newcomer classroom where I would be teaching 4 subjects and would be the only teacher in the room. Has anyone taught a self-contained newcomer classroom? *Just a quick note… I understand and respect that there are many different philosophies on what would be the best model for the student, but I am looking for thoughts on what would be best for work/ life balance for a teacher who sometimes has time management and anxiety stuff.🤷‍♀️ Thank you for looking at it through that lens. Any feedback appreciated! Thanks

Struggling to choose between Master’s

Initially, I planned to pursue a Master’s degree in the creative industries, aiming for a career in fashion, publishing, or media. However, recent changes in my career have led me to question the value of that path.

Now, I'm considering a Master’s degree in Natural Language Processing (AI in language). Do you think this would be a better choice, or is the AI field progressing too rapidly to keep up?

I’d greatly appreciate your input.

How to get a Master's in cybersecurity?

I am currently an undergraduate student studying cybersecurity. While I find it somewhat enjoyable, I have never been super passionate about it. I have one year left and will graduate in the spring of 2025.

Recently, I have become very passionate about programming Artificial Intelligence. I have always enjoyed programming. I have started researching and learning about machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence. I have also been attempting to teach myself the math and the programming required to start building some basic and low-level AI.

This is something that I would really like to pursue as a career. I want to pursue a master's degree in Artificial Intelligence whenever I graduate. But, since most of the work I have done towards learning AI has been on my own, how do I get accepted by schools for a graduate degree in AI? Is that even possible?

What to do with my advanced 6 year old...

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone had input on going forward with my 6 year olds education. He just finished kindergarten and will start 1st grade. He is doing 5th grade fractions math and reading at a 4th grade level... he is enjoying "my big fat zombie goldfish". We dont push him he just enjoys learning the math but he gets bored revisiting older stuff.

My questions really come down to should he skip a grade or not? I worry he wont have the social aspects of school and those skills are probably more important then the missed learning.  What can I do to make sure he isnt getting bored at school?  The school doesnt test for gifted kids until 3rd grade. California is the location and we live in a good school district.

Thank you :)

Holistic health vs typical american health care

I think as a collective there’s a mass realization that the modern American healthcare system is sh*t. Doctor’s don’t actually listen to you, you’re prescribed a pill just to put a bandaid over the issue, it costs $$$$$, etc. Due to this I’ve always been more attracted to holistic health. Whether it be sound therapy, aroma therapy, meditation, yoga, herbalism, etc. But if you look at the number of jobs available and the pay compared to working in a typical hospital I can’t help but to feel small and intimated. I’m currently in school to become an RN but I know my calling is in a more holistic route. any advice/comments is appreciated

Interested in Ed. research?

As an educator, I know that compiling research evidence to support important initiatives is critical. But heading to graduate school is often out of reach for so many. I'm offering a viable solution to this dilemma: the Individualized Research Project comprised of two courses in only one term (!) through Antioch Uni Cont. Ed. (online) where I am adjunct faculty. I will help you complete a research project of your design. You can do this! You can learn more details here: Individualized Research Project - Antioch Uni., Cont. Ed. What percent of parents of suspended children agree their child deserved the suspension?

I’ve been reading a million articles regarding school discipline, but have not found an answer to this question.

Hypothetically, PART of the intended purpose of a suspension is that the child will learn a valuable lesson because the suspension will lead to an important talk at home regarding the offending behavior. However, from my experience, parents almost NEVER agree that their child deserved suspension, but I’d like to know the actual percent.

Anyone know the answer or where I might find it?

How to? A Dad wanting to reinforce and take part in his children's education.

Hello education professionals! I've got an 8yo boy entering 2nd grade and a girl who will be 6yo by the time she hits 1st grade in the Fall. They go to a progressive, project-based learning private school in the US.

I find myself lacking at being an effective educator to my children, which is unfortunate because I feel very passionate about it. I almost feel like I missed my calling to be an educator of some sort, and would love to learn how to teach kids!

I am often considering what kind of role a Dad, or a parent generally, ought to play in their children's education from a developmental psychology perspective. I also think a lot about what sorts of topics are appropriate to their age levels as they have just grasped reading in the last year and the world is opening up for them. I feel like I am overthinking and under-implementing, as well as, being reactive to what they are experiencing out in the world. They will come to me talking about the various global events going on or hear about different religions than mine and my wife's, and feel like I am way behind on what information the kids are being exposed to.

Anyway, I think what I need are some resources and/or advice, both in framing a certain role I can take and perhaps even some homeschooling curriculums that are more supplemental to their overall school education. I am not necessarily looking to make little overachievers or something but to simply be a decent Dad that is involved and imparts information and wisdom. I am more of a knowledge generalist and probably a bit more of a thinker or idea person, so I feel confident I would happily navigate some of the less technical literature.

Thanks in advance!

What’s going on in schools?

I’m thinking of teaching and am wondering what is going on in middle and high schools these days? Like culturally, philosophically, TikTokologically, etc.

Environmental impacts video for 7-11 year olds

I'm looking to do a little movie screening (around 20 min) at the end of an environmental camp summarizing human impacts on the environment and actions that can be taken, after they will craft and sign their own sustainability pledge. I'm looking for something in the vein of "The story of stuff" but more engaging for young eyes. Let me know if you have any ideas!

How can I learn to learn better?

So I want to learn how to learn better, mainly be able to keep information into my head after I learned it like reading some random fact(I mainly struggle with this type of stuff like when having to study history.) Would you guys have any advice, book, or video recommendations? (I also realize I learn better in maths and sciences, mainly when teachers show an example and go through it while also explaining what their doing(then the ideas from that example kinda just stick in my head))

Catalan education system is under siege

Spanish judicial system, one of the most politicized and corrupt in Europe, is destroying the education system in Catalonia and putting schools and teachers in an unstable and impossible position. In the last 14 years the situation is increasingly deteriorating due to irrellevant ultra-nationalistic organizations that are in a crusade against catalan language and the 40 years old linguistic model in Catalonia. The law courts are now rewriting the education laws -approved and ratified multiple times by a overwelming majority in parliament and with overwelming social support- in order to satisfy those small organizations.

There's been also an strong and persistent media campaign against catalan language in schools and a crazy criminalization to catalan teachers. The situation is so bad that many shools are been targeted by far-right individuals, everything in a increasing difficulties in the education system due to high immigration rates and the lack of respect to teachers and public education officers.

The legal inestability is reaching now an impossible scenario. Judicial courts are modifying education laws: they are forcing a reduction of catalan language in schools, even private schools. They are legislating, usurping the parliament functions.

Degree for work

While in the military, there was a degree program that gave you credits for the amount of time you worked. There were a few different options, each requiring a certain amount of hours worked, and those hours logged. Is there a similar program in the civilian world?

May we (try to) create a global canon, more complete than ‘western’?

Given the interesting post by u/Molly-Dolly that sparked discussion on the latent racism in euro-centric classical liberal arts education, could we, as a very large/global community vested in education, try to compile/curate a reading list that honors all contributions? A truer representation of the body of human knowledge?

Skippable context :

I’m posting this before googling, so if I miss any obvious existing attempts at this, please chastise my ignorance, but reading the comments, I screenshot (screenshotted? screenshote? screenshat?) examples of works I’d never heard of.

I went to st. Johns, and briefly taught math at a charter school with a similar model. While the school staff was devoted, respectful (not (explicitly) imposing religious views), and skilled, the higher administration was explicitly/intentionally oblivious to the notion that what we choose to teach is a statement of values, and that leaving something out states that is less valuable. I tried very hard to address non-greek mathematicians, eg list recorded knowledge of “pythagorean” theorem pre-pythagoras, but all that knowledge came from independent studies, which is a damn shame; my education in the history of math/science is severely lacking, and yet it’s my major.

I’m not really interested in discussing Project 2025, we all know it’s bad, I’m not here to fight trolls about whether racism exists; I want to compile a great books list that honors all contributions. This wouldnt be oriented towards a 4 year college, because there is just too much. This is just to have the list.

Logistics :

If you know of existing lists, post them with the heading List:, please and thank you.

If you got recommendations for the list post em here (until we get a secure forum for it) with the heading Books [subject]:

If you know of good textbooks facilitating language studies, please post. Maybe w the heading Textbook [subject]: but idk, cuz euclid is a textbook… more specifically language textbooks, I guess. Not so sure about this one. Maybe just fold it into Books.

This list is for examining human knowledge/emotion/whatever else falls into ‘humanity.’ Astronomy, agriculture, literally anything.

Religion and fiction? Bring it tf on.

If you are tech savvy and know a good way to compile this information (that is troll resistant), please speak up. Heading Tech: My first thought was google docs …. soooo …… maybe a reddit community?

For organization/curation advice, heading Logistics:

Curation is going to be difficult, maybe the notion of curating this list is stupid/impractical/wrong-headed, but I’d rather have a list that’s too long with some inane books rather than a violently discriminatory list. An oligarchy of curators has obvious pitfalls, so I’m pro open source.

Idk, who’s in? (Cue fat list of lists that already exist that im just completely oblivious to)

Teacher salaries

I would like to ask my fellow educators your opinion about something.

Please type in a nonprofit that you are familiar with in your area, large or small, and if you see it in the list (you can sort by State), click on it and then scroll down to CEO, Executive Director and then look at their salary.

https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/

When you find the person in the list, look them up on LinkedIn.

My point is this, teachers and nurses work hard to improve people's lives.

Nonprofit leaders hire volunteers and/or social workers to move Federal money around with the stipulation that the subsidies are restricted to FPL (federal poverty level) guidelines for vulnerable people who are in need of a place to live. (similar to ACA for health care).

They also move donated clothes and food around as well.

My point is this, I have my B.S. in Finance and a M.S. Ed. and I am homeless and turned away from all jobs I apply to. I hear, "overqualified" "you should start your own business."

I am a never married childfree woman. I never taught as a FT paid teacher in a school because I returned to corporate after earning my Masters.

I reported corporate malfeasance at a financial employer that ended up with the company being fined heavily and then sold off, including the property which is now a warehouse distribution center.

I was honest and my integrity wasn't valued.

Social services don't solve financial or housing problems. They are temporary but they create barriers to returning to self-sufficency because of the enormous data collection and data sharing that occurs between govt agencies, nonprofits and background screening companies.

Lots of people aren't aware of how nonprofits actually work, nor do they understand why they don't "solve" societal problems. They actually perpetuate them.

Does anyone else not like the term 'Microcredential'?

To me, it seems like more of a description than an actual name. 'Badge' is slightly better, but also confusing because we already use that word with a different meaning. IDK what else it could be called though...

"Classical Education Movement" sounds like racism in disguise.

I am suddenly getting lots of adverts for "Classic Education" in my social media feeds. I did some reading about it and the arguments for it are absurd. It sounds like legitimized racist propaganda. I worry that there is an immense movement dedicated to grooming children into becoming Proud Boys. Is it all being funded by white supremacists ?

I made a great notetaking app that syncs without the internet!

Hey everyone,

I made an app called Sync Notebook for work/study notetaking. It's a simple note-taking app that syncs your notes (words, photos, and videos) across your android devices WITHOUT THE INTERNET.

Features:

  • Offline Syncing: Sync your notes by turning on your phone's hotspot and connecting your devices. No internet needed!
  • Network-Friendly: No cloud syncing so it doesn't eat up your data when syncing large files.
  • Ad-Free Experience: No annoying ads to interrupt your note-taking.

I’m sharing it here for anyone who needs it—it's completely free. Find Sync Notebook on Google Play and let me know how you think about it!

Thanks!

Preferably those with interactive features for my students to enjoy and maybe some user-friendly stuff for a beginner like me.

Patent filings per country vs education systems

It seems that many Asian countries lead in number of patents filed per year. Japan and Korea really stick out if you calculate per capita. This leads me to believe that their education systems may be superior to the rest of the world in producing inventive people.

Knowing how brutal their education is, that might be a bad thing.

I am a high school dropout. Feeling awful about going back to school 😞

Hey guys, I'm a 19-year-old who dropped out of high school a while ago due to mental health issues and various other problems. I also disliked the school I was attending and had planned to go abroad for my studies. My dream was to prepare for a GED and study in America or another Western country, but that turned out to be unrealistic given my circumstances.

Currently, I'm learning some valuable skills that are in demand in the job market and could potentially generate income in the future. Building these skills might also open opportunities for me to move to a Western country to study. However, right now, obtaining a school diploma is crucial for job security, especially as a fallback if my primary plans don't succeed.

I'm struggling with motivation and feeling somewhat demotivated about returning to school, which is unsettling. Could you share some motivational stories about individuals who dropped out of high school but later returned and achieved success? Whether they are historical figures or ordinary people, hearing such stories would provide me with reassurance and inspiration.
