Students Research Groups in Uni

Hi. I very recently applied to some technical uni. I chose applied math in math faculty. Here's my question: Is it possible to join and engage in student research groups on other faculties like mechanical or electrical. I mean do people get approved since on math faculty you learn basically math and you don't know almost a single thing about mechanics, electricity etc. I'd like to join some student research club, do things, have fun, have better chances of getting great job after I graduate but I think I'll change my study field to something else if such thing isn't possible. I couldn't find such info anywhere else
