I would appreciate any advice on this difficult situation my daughter is in.
My daughter is a junior in high school. She generally makes the honor roll and is in a highly competitive magnet program in a Title I school.
Last quarter, when we received her report card, we discovered she failed history because an in-class, written test was never received. The school has moved to a new portal system that is really confusing. Possibly if we had known where to look or read it right, we would have had some warning.
I contacted the teacher and we talked about making sure it didn't happen again. I got the dates for all in class tests, and texted my daughter after those classes to confirm they were handed in/received by the teacher. After taking a in class quiz, and then an in class exam a couple days later, I noticed that the quiz was marked missing in the portal. I told my daughter she had to follow up with her teacher, but my daughter was reluctant to (kids usually are). She said she probably just hadn't entered the grade yet. When she did finally ask the teacher if she had received the quiz, and more importantly, the exam from a few days later, the teacher said, "If you handed it in, I have it. If you didn't, I don't. All the grades are in the portal. If there's no grade, it's missing." We looked and saw that only half the work for the quarter was graded, therefore all missing.
At this point I wrote to the teacher and cc'ed the guidance counselor and principal, asking if the exam had been received. It took five emails to get an answer to the question, but the teacher did finally say she had the exam.
Over Christmas break, my daughter worked on the missing assignments, which she was mad about because she remembers doing them. I told her that this isn't the last time in her life she is going to be in a situation she feels is unfair, but she has to create a paper trail to cover herself. Ultimately, she wants to pass the class and be able to go to college.
After the break, she submitted all the missing assignments, emailing the teacher with a list of all the work for the quarter, indicating what had already been received and what she was submitting now. She asked the teacher to let her know if she missed anything.
The teacher thanked her for the assignments, said all the work was now graded and in the portal, and that she has until 1/15 to resubmit or make anything up. When we looked in the portal, only one of the recently submitted assignments was there, and she received a failing grade. The exam is still not graded in the portal, which she had told us previously meant that she didn't have it.
I'm just at a loss. The principal and guidance counselor have not responded, except to tell me that if my daughter attempts to document her exams before handing them in (by photographing them) that would be a violation of academic integrity.
Educators out there, how would you like a parent to handle this?
