Can someone tell me why my school held on to my records?

I remember back in high school (Baltimore County) during a pretty depressing moment in life, i was in the guidance counselors office and she showed me this huge file of lots of my school work.

Apparently the school district had been collecting a folder full of my school work from when I first enrolled into public school. Stuff from 1st grade all the way up to 12th. It was the weirdest, but coolest thing ever? There were stories I’d written, math tests I aced, art I drew, etc. I remembered a lot of it very clearly and remembered how proud I was of the work when I had first completed it. It felt like a fever dream!!

She said I couldn’t keep it and that she wasn’t even supposed to show me but she wanted me to know how special I was because they don’t keep many students files like that.

And it definitely made me feel special! I thought maybe she was just saying that but she even showed me they didn’t even have enough storage room to hold on to everyone’s folders.

So I just want to know why were they doing that for? If anyone has any idea. And is it possible I can get this stuff back? It’s been 10 years since i graduated high school!
