Okay or not?

My son is a 7th grade student in a Pennsylvania private school. His language arts teacher, who we'll call "Martha" for simplicity sake, is in her mid 60's. 2 days before the Christmas party, she assigned a paper to the class. My son finished the next day and tried to turn on the assignment, though Martha intercepted the paper before he could turn it in. She looked it over and told him that he had to re-do it, highlighting some sentences and providing no further explanation on what to fix. When my son went to redo the assignment, he didn't know what he needed to fix, so he was not able to turn in the assignment by the deadline of the Christmas party. This afternoon, he went back to school. 5 of the 12 students in the classroom faced the same issue. These 5 students were not allowed to turn in the assignment and required to do another assignment, which was arguably more difficult, for half credit. They also received zeros on the paper. I personally believe my son should receive a grade for the work he completed, and that it is not his fault that his teacher denied the paper without explanation. Is this okay? Should I contact the teacher or the administration?

TL;DR: My son's teacher turned away an on-time assignment without explanation and made him redo it. He couldn't finish on time and received a zero. I do not agree with this and want to know if this is okay/appropriate.

Thank you, folks!

P.S. Don't know if this is the right flair. Hoping it is?
