I am about to start my graduate program search to become a biology teacher, and teaching grade 7-12. After reflecting what has happened the last few years and today's social, political and cultural issues, I realized that I need to work more on my awareness and sensitivities regarding the expanding diversity of today and future students.
I am Chinese American and grew up in a predominately white neighborhood. So my exposure is not very varied, beyond environmental education and community work that I do. I am able to interact with other minority groups and enjoy learning so much from them as we go through the program-they offer so many great stories and insights, but I do feel myself lacking in building rapport and relating to my usually 1 time students and visitors, especially when they link our programs to a social issue they are concerned about.
I would like to get a head start on educating myself and expanding my knowledge and experiences before I begin graduate courses. Would any of my fellow Redditors be able to suggest any reading materials, media, groups or organizations or online group forums that I could participate in?
It would be very helpful.
Thank you.
I am a new resident to NYC if that helps with possible resources.
