Hopefully I'm posting this at the right sub:
I found school absolutely stifling while growing up. Cliques, bullying, and ostracizing anyone different were common among the student body - though I did make a few good friends here and there, overall the experience just turned me off to humanity almost completely.
I also did not enjoy being forced to participate in and study things I did not care about. English, programming, and a few other classes really sparked my interest and I did very well there academically, but having to sit through other classes which I could just not muster anything but apathy for felt like constant low grade psychological torture. I should probably specify I have ADHD which seems to run in my family, judging from my mother's side of the family and now my kids.
I am now faced with having to make choices about my children's education and I balk at the notion of putting them through the same hellish process I endured. I find myself really drawn to the idea of non standard schools/democratic schools. I've done some light research but there doesn't seem to be any solid research or meta studies or... anything really definitive to go on. I am also toying with the idea of home schooling at this point.
If anyone here has experience with schools that lie outside the mainstream, or even being homeschooled, I would love to hear your opinions. Thanks.
