I just graduated high school from the AP/honors track and I believed that I received an excellent education due to the hard work and dedication of my teachers. However I know that was not the case for everyone at my high school. Allot my friends in regular at school did not want to be there. They only showed up because they were legally required to and learned nothing. They did absolutely no work because they hate school but they graduated high school because they showed up and didn't cause any trouble. As much as its good to have well-educated populace you can't educate the unwilling. There has always been a part of America that does not want education and it does not do anyone any good to force them physically into school buildings. I feel that allot of the policymakers are out of touch with that reality and do not accept the fact that there will always be a certain segment of the population that does not want education and trying to teach them is a fruitless endeavor and a waste of resources. Part of the cause is that allot of decision makers in the education system were also in the AP/honors track during high school and did not have much contact with the kids in regular who did not want education. Thus they did not factor those children in when making education policy. Allot of resources are being wasted in trying to address the lack of educational progress made by those who do not want education (ie dropout prevention programs, programs to raise reading scores of those who don't want to read, programs to raise math scores of those who don't want to do any math) when they should just accept that allot of those kids just dont want to read, write, or learn. I feel that public education would be way better if its mission was changed from "Education For All" to "Education For All Who Want To Be Educated".
