How worse off are those with an equivalent (GED, HiSET, etc.) really?

I ask this because I’ve heard from numerous sources that an equivalent just isn’t treated the same by College admissions and employers, that those with one are no better or worse off than drop outs. Yet, the GED test is supposedly harder than a high school entrance exam. That just doesn’t make any sense. How bad is it to test out nowadays? Why isn’t an equivalent looked at the same if the test is allegedly more difficult than just finishing high school?
