Huge difference in education??

Hi,

I'm a highschool student in the Netherlands. My education level is vwo, which is the highest of the three highschool levels we have here. I barely make homework and mostly only seriously focus on school when I have tests. I read that Korean highschool students study until late evenings or even night. This obviously doesn't apply to all students, but I think it is still shocking how much more the average Korean student studies compared to some other countries. Is education really hard in Korea or what is the reason(s) for this huge difference?
