Why are textbooks so expensive? Will they be getting more affordable anytime soon?

Most of what I've read about this issue talks about the dominance of a select few publishers in the market and also their affiliations with universities. Are there any other explanations to why the prices of textbooks continue to soar? And is there any hope for these textbook prices to get lower any time soon?
