Long rant over education

My husband and I are watching ESPN this morning and, of course, Antonio Brown has been a hot topic. He has basically made of mockery of himself- putting his childish shenanigans on display, but he is still guaranteed 10 million dollars for ONE YEAR!

I can’t help but wonder what it would look like for public education if we put 1/10th of the money that professional athletes make toward teacher pay. If we could raise the starting pay for all teachers to $100,000 then there would be no need for a side hustle. Almost every teacher I know sells something on the side. There is nothing wrong with this, but it shouldn’t be necessary to survive! Could you imagine if your child’s teacher made enough money that teaching your baby was her only priority? Could you imagine if your child’s teacher was happy in his/her position because he/she knew they were being paid what what they are worth and didn’t have to worry about side hustles (unless they wanted discounted products 😉).

Teaching used to be such a respected profession and now it’s a joke. School systems have become so political and money is grossly misused. In my area single family homes are between 500k-700k. Townhomes are anywhere from mid 300k- upper 400k. There is a 7% state tax in additional to federal tax and 0.98% on personal property. How is a teacher supposed to survive in this area with a salary of 40-70k? This is pennies and it’s affecting education across the country.

In this area we have a large teacher shortage. There are truly no applicants. No one wants to work as an underpaid teacher in this area- they can’t afford to work and live here. Class sizes are increasing. Think about being in a class with 29-32 other students. What happens when you have a question but so do 25 other students...all different questions that the teacher can’t answer as a group. She doesn’t have an assistant. She is one body.

1/10th of $1m = $100,000. 1/10th of $300m = $30m...$30 MILLION! Think about how many teachers could upgrade be upgraded to $100,000!!

When will we start placing value back on education?
