I am a school counselor for a small rural school that is in the midst of serious financial difficulty. Our school transitioned from a 9-12 to a 7-12 building this year. Next year 1 of 3 schools will close and we will be a 6-12 and loose teaching staff due to budgets.
I am looking into transitioning the school from a 7 period (45 min period) semester schedule to a 5 period (64 min) trimester schedule with a built in daily intervention period (30 min). I have been doing a lot of research and have found best practices that support this. I still am very concerned about making any big changes and know teachers understandably will not be entirely pleased.
My reasoning is that in a trimester schedule we will be able to offer a higher amount of electives with our limited staff.
Has anyone been through a schedule change?
Have experience in a 5 period trimester schedule?
What are your thoughts on a 64 min class period for a 6-12 setting?
In this schedule core classes are taken 2 out of 3 trimesters to complete the year. Thoughts?
Any experience or advice appreciated.
I am the only counselor for the district so we are working in less then ideal circumstances but I have an amazing and supporting principal and superintendent. We all started last year and have been making many changes to try and save the school district.
