iPad or Laptop for taking to class when I also have a desktop pc in my dorm?

Hi all! So I'm a rising sophomore and I'm in need of some advice. So for my freshman year I decided to buy a gaming laptop to bring with me to school instead of my desktop. I play a lot of games and stream and edit a lot so I needed something with some juice to do them all. Well I sold that laptop because it was a little too big and battery life was awful (expected).

So going into this year, I decided to upgrade my desktop and I'm going to be bringing it with me to school as I'm probably going to be spending a lot more time in my dorm. The only problem with that is that I can't just bring a desktop with me to class. So I'm going back and forth on whether to get a cheaper ultrabook around $500-$600 or an iPad Air.

I literally just need this to take notes, and maybe do some very light photo editing and composition. With a laptop at this price, it's going to be hard to find one that is spec'd out to not be obsolete in 2 years and an iPad is just gonna be pricey to get the extra accesories needed. I'm fine with either option but I just wanted to see if anyone here had any experiences with either.
