Is it possible to take honors classes even with preprevious grades being less satisfactory?

I don’t know where else to post this so I apologize if this is the wrong sub! I used to do well in school but starting high school my grades took a big dip. I’ll be a junior this upcoming year and I know how important it I to have rigor in your courses and how that looks on college applications. My school requires department and teacher approval to be able to take honors classes and I know that given my previous grades the approval may not be granted. I really would like to take them this year though given that extra help is available to me this year and my self discipline has improved.
