Steps to collect student information. Not sure this is the place to ask.

I teach high school seniors in a small rural community in the Deep South. I am working on a book about the concept of “rural brain drain”. Please don’t let that phrase offend you; it’s just the common name for the alleged phenomenon. Moreover, I’m trying to gather political and social opinions of the students and see how they relate to their parents. Is there any specific notifications I need to give to the students or parents? I’m not planning on using names or any other identifiers. I doubt I would get honest answers if I gave information about the book topic. I’m not trying to make anyone appear unintelligent, but there are stigmas associated with the subject matter.
