Daily accountability with students is killing me. Fellow mentors, how do you manage this? Am I alone on this??

To many absencences

Im 15 and live in texas. I have 16 absences in 1st period and 10 (i think) in second period, and recently my dad told me that he needs to have a meeting with the assisnt principle because of my unexcused absences. Most of my absences have come from the past few weeks as my bike was stolen and i had to walk causing me to miss the first period and sometimes second. Is their something i can do? Will the school push this matter to a truancy court(i think is what it is called)? (if this is the wrong subreddit to ask, can u tell me which one to put it in)

I would also like to note that not all of my abscences are due to my bike, and that some of them are because of my laziness of not wanting to go to school because i forgot about an assingment.

Do gifted kids need different schooling in primary grades?

I asked in r/ScienceBasedParenting and got nothing but a 20 comment thread arguing about whether my son is autistic 🙄.
Anyhoo, my son is only just 2 but he’s left me wondering about how he knows/understands what he does almost since the newborn stage. He’s not super out there doing crazy savant stuff, he's mostly just a really sweet normal kid (albeit a lot more switched on), but it’s become pretty apparent that he’s very, very smart and there’s a couple key things he’s done that tell me he’s likely legitimately gifted (not just advanced etc). BUT he’s also quite interested in people and is very social (it’s a core interest of his along with more academic stuff—hard to weight them at such an early age but I’d say 50-50). I do not want to isolate this kid. But I also don’t want to choose the wrong education for him.

Schools around here need years of advance planning, but I found an amazing one that aligns with my values. It’s very difficult to get in and there are fees just to apply of course. The day I was filling out the paperwork he read his first word by himself (hence why some strange internet dude decided to diagnose him with autism & hyperlexia without asking whether he had any signs of either of those conditions😣). Like I said, theres been a lot of things that made me get the feeling he was jst a lot more switched on, but this was one of a couple key things that told my objective brain this is likely true. He likely is actually gifted.

I’m completely aware there’s no way to tell for sure, and assessing him is the last thing on my mind, but I do want to make the best decisions for him going forward. I’ve read primary kids don’t need gifted programs. And I’d love if that was the case (I actually hate the idea of labelling him and sorting him out of the grouP—it seems sad and potentially super toxic). Someone recommended a book about the 5 levels of gifted, but at this point I see things my son has done essentially on every level so it’s not a huge help. The school I want to send him to doesn’t have a gifted program, but they work one-on-one with kids and closely with parents. Kids also have the opportunity to do private tutelage in music etc during class hours. I feel like this would be an amazing place for him but I don’t know the first thing about these kids’ needs. Do they actually need a “gifted” program???

Can anyone advise/put my mind at ease?

What's the best lesson that you've ever done and why?

For me, I think it was a philosophical chairs debate in 6th grade history. This was during a prehistory unit. We debated whether or not scientists should bring back the woolly mammoth. The kids were super engaged, yet we all learned a ton and developed skills. It took a ton of scaffolding, and energy on my end to moderate the debates, but it was well worth it. I focused on these CCSS standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.1
Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

119 out of 120 credits, but can’t graduate on time

I don’t know what to do. I’m a current senior at a four year university in NJ. I am one credit shy of graduation but this one class is kicking my butt.

I took this class four times already—according to their academic policy, if I fail this class I can’t meet the requirements for the major.

I see two options: change my major, which will set me back a year, or transfer schools and see if they will take as many of my credits as possible.

I am doing a bachelor’s in Information Technology and have an associates in Computer Science.

I am despondent.

I am already late—it took me six years to get to this point. The thought of another year of this makes me physically ill.

Advice is welcome, but honestly I just want support.

University recommendations in Europe

I am a non EU student and want to study at european universities.The problem is I dont know any european languages except English so I need fully english taught degrees in cs/engineering majors. I made a lot of researches and found some unis to apply but its really hard to find the ones which exactly fits my critierias so I need your advices. Education Crisis

Teachers - What do you think is causing this education crisis?? I am not in education, but many of my close friends are! I have family friends as well who have taught for 20+ years and everyone is leaving in droves!!! For many reasons im sure. The pay is awful, the students are becoming uncontrollable, also the risk of just being shot in a school here is a high possibility.

Something I am gathering is that these kids for some reason dont know how to write a full sentence, can barely read, and dont have many critical thinking skills. I think a heavy part is social media, however, reading and typing is a HUGE part of social media (commenting/texting/DMing/reading comments/reading basic captions on posts). I think “No kid left behind” has completely screwed us. The thought of being held back used to scare the hell out of me throughout my WHOLE school career. And i grew up with early early social media introductions. My coworker will bring in the math homework her 6th grader has and when i tell you it’s LITERALLY just coloring in patterns. No math equations, no +,-,x, or division.

As a 24 year old Gen Z in an alright public school, my peers and I in 2nd grade were reading at a 5th grade + reading level, we could draft and write a 5 paragraph essay in 45 minutes, cursive was highly encouraged but kinda fell off, we still had to be able to read it.

How have we regressed so bad? How do we fix it? Even if you arent a student/teacher, you should be extremely ALARMED!! These are our children we are failing. These are our future doctors, nurses, lawyers, salesmen, TEACHERS, policemen/women. I dont want to be under the knife of a doctor who couldn’t read till he was in high school.

(DISCLAIMER!!!!): I understand there are kids who dont have the resources to further their education and are at a disadvantage, this is not directed towards these students!! I hear that there are very privileged students who just dont apply themselves!!

What type of companies (sector, size, etc.) care about education of employees and invest resources for the same?

I was talking to my friends who recently joined their company and realised the following things in the context of education of employees:
a) Companies don't actually care about their employee's learnings and is mostly a formality

b) For employees, it is sorta formality for them as well just to sit throught it, pass tests if any (most of them don't end up doing it if they don't have tests check in).

I want to understand to what extent this is true depending on the company's demographics (company size, industry, etc.) and I'm interested to learn more about the companies who actually care about the learnings of the employees at the job and invest in the resources?

Does receiving a grade of 2 in an important subject during my undergraduate studies affect my admission to a master's program at top universities ranked 1-50?

I have a 90% probability of receiving a grade of 2 in databases after the current semester. This course is offered at my university with 3 credit units. In addition, there are many other computer science courses, but none directly related to databases. I am studying applied mathematics and fundamental informatics.

Presumably, my GPA will be around 3.7 out of 4. I plan to apply for interdisciplinary biology.

The education system, as it stands today, often molds individuals into labels and categories that serve broader social and economic frameworks. People are encouraged to self-identify through labels imposed by society—labels that shape conformity rather than fostering genuine understanding or individuality. Those who don't fit the system's predefined norms, such as individuals with autism or dyslexia, often find themselves sidelined or misunderstood, forced to adapt to a structure that is ill-equipped to meet their unique ways of learning.

Social norms, compliance, and complacency are deeply intertwined. These norms are maintained by hierarchical structures that control not just power, but the allocation of resources and the shaping of influence. Individuals are subtly taught to follow and accept these norms, rarely questioning the intent behind them. The education system plays a key role here—it reinforces the idea that stability is achieved through uniformity, not through diversity of thought or critical questioning.

This dilemma creates a cycle where behavior is conditioned to align with the expectations of the masses, where perceived reality is shaped by manipulation and control, rather than by personal observation or genuine understanding. Self-image becomes a product of external influences rather than an authentic reflection of the individual. There is often a wide gap between the image one creates for themselves and the image society has made for them—a gap that leads to contradictions in actions and motives.

The systems in place maintain power through a careful balance of dominance and deception, where inconsistencies in intent and action are overlooked in favor of maintaining the illusion of stability. The hierarchy's influence isn't always overt; it works subtly through behavior, norms, and the educational structure itself. The masses, lulled by a sense of security in the familiar, often fail to notice the inequities that exist within these systems.

However, awareness of these inequities and the intent behind them is crucial for change. The question becomes: What actions are individuals willing to take? The system thrives on collective inaction, on the assumption that people will follow the majority without questioning the foundation of their reality. Education, in its truest form, should awaken consciousness, not suppress it. The challenge lies in moving beyond what is comfortable and familiar, in questioning the very systems that condition us, and in collectively acting to transform them.

Ultimately, it is not enough to understand these dynamics intellectually; one must act with purpose and intent to dismantle systems of control and power. True education begins when the individual breaks free from conformity and seeks to elevate not only their own consciousness but the consciousness of others as well.

What's your take on the ideal school calendar/schedule?

It feels like public education, in the US at least, is stuck in legacy. We run schools from August/Sept. until May/June, M-F just because we always have. It doesn't seem like this schedule exists because it's scientific. It's just the calendar/schedule because it's the calendar/schedule. Feel free to split your answer to this question into two parts.

i am turing 16 next month and i was really good in 10 grade because the subjects were really easy and the exams were like walking in a park i bearly opend my books only when its the last day before the exam , got 93/100 score in the end of the10th grade ........ but Suddenly as soon as i entered the 11 grade everthing got so freaking hard and i cant keep up with my teachers becasue i am not accustomed to learing and reading my books and regularly on daily bases most of my time spent on 10 grade was playing on my computer, and the 9th grade we only had 1 month of school (Teacher boycotts) , and dont get me started with 8th grade, so as you see my attention span is 0 when it comes to school and education i cant keep my self away form video games (story / online) , if any one here have/had the same proplem as me plz talk to me i need seroius help maybe an advise or two dosent matter at least descirpe how you study .

Hi everyone, Im currently studying for my A-levels in the UK, with exams coming up next summer. Unfortunately, my predicted grades are not where I want them to be (mostly C's), but I've recently realized how important it is to aim for a good university and quality education. I'm determined to work hard to improve my grades, but in case I don't reach my goals, I'm considering taking a gap year to study another Level 3 course or perhaps an Access to Higher Education course? Hello, I am a last year nursing student. I love this field and I believe I am a relatively successful student with a natural tendency to the field of nursing. The lessons don’t feel too hard.

Since the lessons feel kind of easy, I wanted to give my energy to something else. So I started coding (like everyone else, I know..) 3 years ago. At first, it was just about of making some money from freelance jobs. However, I found a full time job 2 years ago, which was very fortunate of me because the company is very flexible in terms of working hours and the tasks. The boss is a computer science professor and he is super chill if you have any problem with a task. He and his flexible environment taught me a lot of things in this field. Consequently, I feel more confident than ever and software development has become like a professional career for me.

Now this is my last year in nursing school. I am fortunate enough to graduate uni with 2 serious career opportunities and unfortunate enough to be having to choose one of them. Since I don't want that, I am looking for a suitable master's degree so that I can both use my technical and medical skills. And I am open to any career recommendations that I can combine these both areas.

In my local school district, we are graduating functionally illiterate adults. Is this happening elsewhere? Why are administrators not stepping up?

I was a full time teacher for 25 years in a poor rural district. For my first 16 years, any behavior incidents serious enough for parent contact were strictly under the purview of school site administrators. They decided the consequences. They called the parents. They documented. They set up and moderated any needed meetings. They contacted any support person appropriate to attend the meeting such as an academic counselor, socio-emotional counselor, and special education professional.

Behavior at our schools, district-wide, was really good. I enjoyed my four years of subbing at any of the district schools (It took four years for there to be an opening for full time). Even better, we had excellent test scores. Our schools won awards. Graduates were accepted at top ten colleges.

After a sweeping administrative change in 2014, my last nine years were pure hell. Teachers were expected to pick up ALL the behavior responsibilities listed in the 1st paragraph. Teachers just didn't have the time, nor the actual authority to follow through on all of these time-sucking tasks. All it took was one phone call from a parent to an administrator to derail all our efforts anyway.

I still have no idea what the administrators now do to earn their bloated paychecks. They have zero oversight. As long as they turn in their paperwork on time, however inaccurate, no one checks to make sure they are doing their jobs.

Our classrooms are now pure chaos. Bullying is rampant. Girls are constantly sexually harassed. Objects fly across the classroom. Rooms are cleared while a lone student has a table-turning tantrum. NONE of this used to happen. It became too dangerous to be a teacher in my district, so I retired early.

Worst of all, we are graduating functionally illiterate adults. Our test scores are in the toilet. Our home values are dropping. My community is sinking fast.

I hate all schools that require attendance.

If I pay tuition, then I should be given a diploma, a degree, regardless of my attendance!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this way, that is, that self-study at home is much more efficient and much more productive than learning at school.

But there are some darn schools that count your attendance, and it requires high attendance (60% or more) to graduate.

It's ridiculous. Don't they realize that I can teach myself what they teach me in school? All I need is that diploma or degree, I paid for it and it should be given to me.

Does anyone else think attendance is stupid?

Child was SA’d at KIPP

My son (6) was SA’d in a bathroom at a KIPP school in Houston, Texas. We went to the school and they’re only solution was to have a no contact agreement between my son and the offender. We want a transfer to a different KIPP but have been stonewalled. Head leader doesn’t want to help us. What can a do to get some help outside of the school? And how? Police? News?

Declining Education/Lowering Education Standards.

I came across some statistics for the area I’m from, and in 2010 85% of seniors that graduated were at or above an average reading/math level. The 2019/20 year that number went down to just 27%. Yet graduation rates have increased from 61% to 91%. This makes me extremely fearful to send my kid to school in this area. Why are kids at or above average intelligence levels at such a low rate these days? I fear the political antagonism and divided atmosphere has affected the educational landscape. What are your thoughts on why this could be?

Exact reason why we so stupid and weak

When trying to learn or improve in any way people over stimulate themselfs(hardwork! try hard!) to point of stress and trauma and then give up, cause progress is none or very small.

Proper way to improve is to have Perfect amount of Stimulus where it does not cause stress or trauma and adaptation can happen as fast as biologically possible(new neuronal connections, muscle tissue improving).

We have mechanism for Perfect Stimulation - Play. Best way to define it is pretending you already are absolute master of the thing you are learning or you already are super strong and doing the thing in focused, but relaxed way as a master would. This way there is no neurotic, stressful, traumatic try hard nonsense and you will gain skills and knowledge so fast everyone will call you "talented".

Used Technology Smartly Last Night

Last night, I was helping my niece prepare for her science exam. We’d gone over all the material, but I wanted to see how much she’d actually absorbed. So, I started making some MCQs.

That’s when I had an idea, I could use a bot to make it fun and easier. I set up an AI bot on a platform I use. I uploaded her study notes to the knowledge source and customized the bot to quiz her and ask her both basic and challenging questions. It followed up with explanations when needed and helped her understand the concepts she hadn't understood completely before.

At first, I wasn't sure whether she might be convinced or not, as you know how kids throw tantrums while studying. But to my surprise, my stubborn baby liked the idea. So, yes that was a win for me and maybe it will help and ease these tedious times of exams for your little ones.

Elementary school children & grammar delay

Our children are in elementary school in US. They seem to have English grammar delay, like mixing past, present, future tenses and things like that (both verbally and written). Part of it is our fault being in bilingual household. I'm not sure having ESL instruction has helped or hurt. My question is: Do students tend to catch up eventually on their English skills?

Need advice rural

Hello everyone. Long story short, boutta get married and settle in her hometown. Problem is it’s in middle of nowhere.

I was blessed with a truly top shelf education in high school and college. My parents were both professors which meant it’s what we valued.

I am however struggling because my potential kids will not have access to excellent education at least until college. Do I do my best to supplement? Do I risk them developing resentment because I can’t strike a balance between father figure and teacher?

Bonus, when I bring this up with soon-to-be-wifey, she hits me with a “I turned out fine,” which is true, I just don’t want future kids ceiling to be defined by something like this.

True thoughts on educating YouTube videos for our toddlers?

I have been thinking very deeply about what “YouTube Kids” really has to offer our children and the reality seems like our options are pretty scarce and the platform could actually be quite zombifying for our kids…has anyone else noticed this or only me? Well my toddlers and I have came up with the plan to create a YouTube channel as a place where our kids can safely and adequately learn while being entertained and mentally stimulated in a healthy way!

Should i go back to college or university?

I only have high school diploma in ontario, canada. I m early 30s. Recently lost my customer service job. I never really thought of career advancement. Until i lost my job and new born on the way.

I still have 2yrs left in accounting and finance diploma in college.

After losing the job, is a wake up call, bec i realized with my education background, i can only get customer service job with slightly above minimum pay, which i m tired of the minimum pay and the boring job. I wanted to change career path/life.

I m thinking of going back to school but my friend said i should study for a bachelor degree, rather than college degree bec if both courses requires 3-4yrs of study, why wouldn’t i take the bachelor course, also salary would be higher/somewhat decent.

What do you guys think?

Should i do full time job and do part time study but takes longer to finish the degree.

What are your thoughts on the wheel elective model?

When I was a student, I was enrolled in a wheel in middle school and I absolutely loved it. Think I took 12 different electives via the wheel over 3 years. For me, it was so cool to explore different subjects in a condensed period of time.

However, since being in education as a professional, I haven’t seen the wheel used in any of the schools I’ve taught in.

Funding Parent ESL Program

I teach in a K-12 district. When I first started teaching in another state (many moons ago), our school had a grant for Parent ESL. I taught parents every night after I had taught their children during the day. It was a wonderful program. The parents were more comfortable and invested in their children's school and education, and they improved their skills. In my current district, I've connected with an admin who is interested in setting up something similar, but is at a loss for how to fund it. Is anyone aware of any grants or programs that might apply?

Peers who relied on ChatGPT to do their work scored higher mark.

It’s not fair how an honest human work scored lower than a ChatGPT printed work. For context, I have this assignment which my peers printed his work entirely from ChatGPT an hour ago before the due date and scored like full marks while my work that I did only using ChatGPT sort of like tools scored lower. I read my peers work and I could tell without a doubt it’s 100% printed from ChatGPT. The format, content and the English. How is this fair? I was told to not use ChatGPT since the uni made it a rule that for any work submitted, has to be submitted to turnitin. Do the lecturers just not care what’s ChatGPT and what’s not?

Am I too old to go back to college?

I’ve been working since high school, mainly doing manual labor. Recently, I’ve been thinking about going back to school to finally get a degree. The thing is, I feel like I'd be that old guy in the class surrounded by kids half my age.

Has anyone here gone back to school later in life? Was it worth it? I'm just worried it’s too late to make that kind of change. I’ve got a good job now, but it’s not something I want to be doing forever.

Jane

Jane is 13 and is considered 'smart'.

She has good grades and she studies her butt off every night and every day for one A+. Her report cards are mostly A+s, but sometimes there are a few Bs and A-s. Everyone thinks she is the best. She has Bs in Orchestra and Art, but otherwise they’re mostly As.

Ever since 7th grade, she hasn’t had time to do things she used to do at 6th grade. She doesn’t talk on the phone with her friend living in another state anymore, she doesn’t talk to her relatives anymore. There aren’t simply any time for any of that.

She heard that in high school however things get worse. She needs all A+s to get into this very special club where the school prepares her for Ivy Leagues, and she knows that expectations are too high for her to give up and becomes an average student now. After all, she has an image to maintain and she knows that well.

Do people just studied their whole life and then for the rest work and boom, it’s over?

Jane doesn’t see hope in the future- she doesn’t see how it will turn out. She can’t imagine herself standing at a high-school classroom. As time went by she questioned everything.

Jane wants to disappear. She doesn’t want to suicide or take up that unnecessary process- she wants to just disappear and go back to the days when she simply didn’t exist. She wants every cell in her body to simply vanish from the planet.

Or maybe she’s delusional and is doing things all the hard way. Anyhow, she shouldn’t be wasting time thinking- she should be catching up in math.

Is this really how education supposed to work?

How is education- if brought upon such harsh terms- "enjoyable"?

Drop-out wanting to go back

So I have turned 21 recently and came to the conclusion I want to go back to TAFE or CIT to study teaching or animal care however in order to do so I need to complete my grade 10-12. All elementary (and perhaps high) school material in one book?

I'm wondering if it would be possible (or perhaps if it already exists) to make a textbook aimed at adults that would cover all the material from all subjects for all the grades of elementary and high school (preferably some general high school, like grammar school), with materials explained in a way that's clear to adults (without needless overexaplanation and countless examples that are more suitable for children).

So it would be like some sort of encyclopedia.

This book would serve 2 purposes:

1) to help adults refresh their memories about the stuff they learned in school years and decades ago

2) to help non-native speakers of English re-learn things from school, this time in English, so that they get familiar with all the English terminology used in various sciences, as well as how to pronounce names of historic and literary figures in English, how to pronounce Latin in English way, etc... (Because, for example, a Polish person, who is well-educated, and learns English, will probably not know how to properly pronounce names like Archimedes or Achilles or Ezekiel in English even phrases like "homo sapiens" or "habeas corpus", because their English pronunciation is not transparent - and knowing classical Latin pronunciation doesn't help either, as English-speaking people don't pronounce with classical Latin pronunciation, but with traditional English pronunciation , so it's very hard to guess unless you learn it explicitly from some book. And that would impede the ability of non-native speakers of English to hold conversation about more "learned" topics, such as history, biology, law, etc... in English)

What is a good book that teaches how the American education system works? Things such as what grade school, primary, secondary, post secondary and post undergraduate school is. Detailing what the different levels of degrees are and how they work, terms like "gpa, major, associates etc?"

So, for a little perspective, I'm a highschool dropout. Ironically, I've never been interested in education until after I left school. Basically, I just want to know what books/websites/sources of information can I seek out to help me better understand how "School" overall works. For example, I'm not completely sure what a "GPA" is, how it works, why it's used, or the importance/reason for estimating a high school student's gpa/grade point average. Another example for instance, as someone who hasn't grown up in the most educated household with education being prominent, I've never really had an understanding of how further educational institutions work, such as colleges/universites. I would like to know things such as what a major is, the different levels of degrees in order, and what role they play in determining the level of education someone may have.

I really think that there should be some kind of book on this, I think an overall general broad understanding of how the education system really works would be essential for any student/person really. It would make navigating your way through academic success way easier. I don't want to go through life only having an intuitive understanding of these things. I'd like to be able to explain it to someone throughly.

Underestimating The Newest Generations

As someone who just recently became an adult, I see all the time people complaining about the education of kids in school these days. I feel this is a pessimistic take, especially by teachers. Maybe it's because I was recently a student myself, but I have not seen any perceived negative effect to children's learning. I saw a post about how kids in middle and high school cannot use computers or the internet, and this made me angry. Why do people assume teenagers can't use the internet, while also claiming they are on their phones too much? The post mentioned that they had middle schoolers who couldn't use Google, and who didn't know what the internet was. They claimed nobody under 20 knows how to use computers or the internet. They claimed teenagers expect apps. A quote from the post is, "I never laugh in their faces, but it's always a close thing. Because they are expecting an app." This isn't even the only post that claims kids don't know anything, but this is the one that made me the most mad. STOP ACTING LIKE KIDS ARE STUPID! I'm posting this without adding more because it's 1:30 AM but I hope my point came across correctly.

Need help for Spanish speaking girl’s education options while learning English

I’m asking for my friends who moved to the US less than a year ago. They have two small children, a boy in 2nd grade and a girl in 3rd who are currently going to the local public school. They’re suddenly having to learn in an all English-speaking school, so naturally they’re facing some issues.

I’m concerned about both of these children, but the girl is more sensitive than the boy so she’s having a pretty terrible time. The teachers are yelling at her. The teachers aides are yelling at her. And when their mom went to talk to the principal et al about this, they denied any mistreatment, and basically stonewalled her after telling her that if her daughter doesn’t shape up she’ll be left back.

It’s as if these educators don’t get the simple fact that this little girl does not understand very much English yet & needs help, not reprimanding. And they treat her so poorly that she comes home crying and pleading with her mother not to make her go back to the school. Her mom is teaching her English at home but it’s not some kind of magic trick that happens instantaneously, especially since her mom is also learning English at the same time.

She’s very well behaved but they treat her like some kind of a troublemaker just because she doesn’t understand the language. This is just crazy to me.

I found that there is a program in 3 of the public schools in our town called Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) where students learn English while they’re studying the curriculum in Spanish. So basically, the kids have an opportunity to learn the appropriate curriculum & maintain their grade level while they’re learning English, all under one roof. Then ultimately they transition into fluent English speakers at which point the language barrier to education is no longer an issue.

The problem is that the public schools in our district are ranked very low, bottom 17th percentile I think I read, and also these 3 schools are in pretty rough neighborhoods. So even though the concept of TBE sounds perfect, the prospect overall is far from ideal.

I don’t think homeschooling would work well because her parents speak Spanish in the house and are also learning English themselves, so the kids aren’t exposed to very much English outside of school.

Private school doesn’t seem to be an option for them because of finances, but I haven’t looked into scholarships or other programs that might be available, so there’s a possibility that with financial aid she could get into a private school. But even then the odds of finding a private school where she could learn in Spanish, but study English at the same time seems pretty far flung, even though there is a large Latino population in our city.

So I’m here to hopefully get some more ideas from you folks. I am not experienced at this kind of thing. I don’t have children myself and I’ve never given much thought to how a child could make a transition like this. I don’t know anything about how charter schools work or what other options might be available. Any info you could share that would help me help them is much appreciated.

Advice Wanted: Have BFA, and now want to be an Art Teacher (K-12)

So I recently graduated with a BFA in Illustration and a Minor in Entertainment Arts. I have realized that I actually really want to teach K-12 in my home state of Ohio.

Since I already have a BFA I’m not really sure where to start… I know there are some Art Education Licensure programs or I could go back for another Bachelor’s degree. I know I more than likely could get credits transferred from my first degree for my second.

Not sure if it’s worth it to go through with another Bachelors or if I should just try and go for a Licensure program. Any and all advice is appreciated. I’m extremely lost and honestly don’t know where to start.

The school says my 14-year-old is doing great, but she has enormous gaps in basic knowledge that stun me. The teachers tell me not to worry, that this is normal with this generation. Is it? My other kids, now 19 and 22, were never like this.

I live in the U.S., in a community with better-than-average schools and plentiful resources. Yesterday my wife and I had a standard scheduled meeting at the local high school, about the progress of our 14-year-old daughter, that left me a bit worried and unnerved .

Our daughter is kind and well-adjusted and shows real consideration for others. We often hear how pleasant she is to be around (she is!), and that's terrific. She's pretty damn decent at math and a good speller and not a bad writer and I'm proud of her for all of that, and tell her so.

But you know those filmed street interviews where random passersby are asked super simple trivia questions and they have no clue, and you want to tear your hair out with vicarious embarrassment? Yeah. The way things are going, that's going to be her.

There are so many basic things re, for instance, history and geography, that she doesn't know. Examples: At 14, she doesn't know what the capital of our state is, and barely came up with the correct answer when asked to name the capital of the U.S. She has no idea when World War II started or ended, can't begin to tell the differences between capitalism and communism, can't tell the Revolutionary War from the Civil War, hasn't even heard of key figures like Albert Einstein or John F. Kennedy or Bill Gates, etc.

I'm not asking her to describe nuclear fission or solve Fermat's Theorem. I'm talking about everyday stuff that I thought was (or ought to be) part of what halfway educated citizens know. Even at 14.

The teachers say she's doing great, that she's always cooperative and attentive, that she's "in the top half of her class." On one level, that's satisfying to hear, but if the latter part is true, I also find it frightening and depressing.

I knew so much more about the world when I was her age. So did our older daughters, now 19 and 22. (The middle one is even a trivia fiend who can give me a run for money when we watch Jeopardy together.)

According to the teachers, the current generation learns "differently" and finds it harder to focus and retain things. I'm told that it should all turn out fine and that I have no real cause for concern. Don't I? What does that stance say about our education system and our collective future? Am I a jerk, or way off base, for worrying about my daughter and about the low, low expectations that today's society seems to impose on students?

Will spending a year in a good private school help in my uni application?

I’m contemplating whether to apply for an academic scholarship for a good private school in the area for year 10. It is unlikely I will spend Year 11 or 12 there though since that is the cut off for the scholarships.

Statistics GRANT ideas

Help in daily centar organisation

Hello! I'm special education teacher from Bosnia 🇧🇦. Recently I've been appointed as a chief intendant of daily center for children with disabilities (literal translation from my native language). This is something new in my town and country in general so I would like to know, if you would be so kind, what are the examples of good practise that you know of? What services and activities are we to offer in order to ensure educational and a time well spent for our users during the day? What are the security precautions?

I'd like l to tell you a bit about our daily centar and how we work here. We've been established a year ago and could still use some tips and tricks. At the moment there are 2 spec education teacher, two speech therapists, one nurse and one cleaning leady on 30 users. Currently we are providing these services only for children age 6-18. I would like that, during my time and in near future, we allow adults and seniors in the daily center as well so that they can use our services. I'm opet to suggestions on this topic as well. At the moment the users spend 3 hours In the center (I would like to take it to 6 hours). Food is bland and mostly consists of pastry and spreads. We have a agreement with the red Cross to provide transportation from home to the center and back. Also, since this is a little bit of a corrupt country all our daily center is covered in windows. Around 80% of it 😅. The contractor wanted a pretty building and didn't care about the hazards and children. Also We've got a sensory room and provide these services to some users since it's really small and on the lower level equipped. Feel free to ask me more in order to give some constructive criticism. Thoughts around competence based leveling per subject in school?

Hi I was thinking about problems with the current system of schooling. Specifically that we assume that kids of the same age are all the same level but also that kids are equally skilled at different subjects.

Why we can't have a system where academic subjects are split into different tracks e.g. Math 1-X, English 1-X, Science 1-X etc. And each class, say Math 5, would have kids at roughly the same level who are perhaps of different ages. And kids could be at different levels in each track, so they could be Math 5, Science 4, English 3.

If a kid can't pass then they'd have to repeat the year for just that subject. There would also need to be some sort of acceleration mechanism for kids who are quickly mastering the material. Not sure how that'd work but perhaps at the end of the first semester if it seems clear that this level is too easy then in the second semester + summer school they'd be on an accelerated program to try and jump a level.

This setup makes a lot more sense to me and I was wondering if there's something big I'm missing for why this wouldn't work. I guess it would make scheduling a lot more complicated. But want to understand if there are some other problems with this approach that I didn't realize

Any ideas for a school program?

I'm running for a student president this year and am looking for some ideas on school improvement. It is important to say that my school really struggles with student participation, because the majority of studens spend all the time by dull sitting and being on their phones with zero interest in basically anything. I would be happy to organize few projects that would help the overall atmosphere and improve the communication. Teacher Peer Observations

My county and my sister-in-law’s county in Ohio are in integrating peer observations to help us better our craft. We were told that Our goal must align with one of four strategies that they’ve given us. I chosen engagement, but I think we can all agree that cell phones, disruptions, and standardized testing are what’s hurting engagement and not teachers. At any rate, I am being once again removed from my students to go watch another teacher so I can learn how to do my job. I’ve been doing this for 19 years, and I feel like I am self-aware enough to know what it is that I can improve on. I spent my summer taking classes in modern classroom because it’s what I believe is best for my students. Perhaps you can tell that this idea is making me feel more resentful. I feel like teachers are being blamed for all of the problems in this crumbling educational system in the country. My question is, other counties doing this across the United States?, And does it serve any other purpose than having administration and the state try to fix the system by blaming us and fixing us?

Need Advice: Moving Across the Country with a High School Junior Who Has Special Needs

I’m reaching out for advice on behalf of a friend. They have a son who is a junior in high school and has special needs. The family is in conflict because one parent wants to move from Tennessee back home to Oregon, where they are originally from. However, they’re worried about how disruptive this move could be for their son, especially given his education and support system. The child has been in the school system in TN for 12 years and work very well with him. They’re considering pulling him out of school entirely, but aren’t sure what the legal or educational options are.

Specifically, we’re trying to find out: • Are there any exemptions in Tennessee or Oregon that would allow a child with special needs to not finish high school? • What are the alternative education paths or diplomas available for students with special needs in either of these states? • Has anyone navigated a situation where moving affected a child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or special education services?

Both parents have full-time jobs and are super stressed out about researching and don’t know what to do. Any help would be very much appreciated — Thank you in advance.

Revision Books for English Literature?

So, I've just started a access to higher education course and one of my modules is English Literature (Which I picked as I enjoyed in school).The thing is I am now 20 years old and now have no clue how to write a high grade Essay. I have forgotten all the key elements and terms of/for Literature. I really need a high grade and to get a distinction in all essays to get into an Russel Group Uni- which seems impossible right now.

Is there any useful resource books you can recommend to help me write in-depth, efficient essays with the correct terminology? I really need to refresh my memory with the language. Thank you.

( Keep in mind an access course is only 1 academic year and very intense, I get my " predicted grades " in December- one month before the deadlines to apply for universities are. So I need to step up my game ASAP! )
