US kids living abroad - US University?

My son is 13 and starting 9th grade at an international (IB) school in the UK. (has over 80% university placement rate but mostly to EU schools). We’ve been living abroad since he started 7th grade due to my job. I’m trying to figure out how difficult living abroad is going to eventually make his admission to a US university (his goal). Do we need to move back just for him? If so at what point? What if it’s just for his senior year (if we just let my job play out without seeking transfer back sooner)? He won’t have a conventional GPA. I’m sure we can get SAT/ACT from here but are there barriers we need to consider as we sort through career/his goals? If this isn’t the right forum the sorry to interrupt.
