What can I do with my Speech Language Pathologist career?

Note: I am writing on behalf of my mother.

In NY state, it seems like multiple careers/positions in the education field are scarce to come by. I live on LI and the rumors are true, any kind of positions in these school districts out here are non-existent. The minute jobs are posted on OLAS (the state's job engine for education), the positions get filled the day of.

My mom is a licensed SLP in NY state with both a BA and an MS in the subject. She's been checking for SLP public school jobs a year before she graduated from her MS program and still to this day, she has not found any luck with her career. It's part of her morning routine to check OLAS for any job positions and nothing has ever worked out that route. She has 2-3 years of solid work experience as a practicing SLP for charter and private schools, all in Brooklyn. She enjoys her job very much, but she quit when the daily commute started taking a toll on her (2 1/2 hours each way). The biggest reason she quit was because she was finding SLP work through an agency and they were very shady and manipulative holding her checks hostage; my mother was not getting paid, so she left. My mom has been religiously looking at DOE SLP positions for the past 3+ years, and everything is either in Brooklyn or the Bronx; the commute is not practical at all, especially since my mom would prefer to be nearby-ish for my younger brother. She really wants to work because I can see how depressed she's become just staying at home (she's been jobless for a year) and I don't know what else to tell her. I've called all the school districts on LI (around 161) and they all give me the same spiel, "did you check on OLAS? It would be on OLAS". Meanwhile there are people that both my mother and I know that are getting hired at these great school districts (a few dozen) without any posting on OLAS!!!

I'm posting this on here in hopes I can get some help for my mom. She's thinking about going back to school (she dreads the thought) and considering either math teacher, elementary school, or TESOL/ESL. For you guys who have been around the block a few times in public school education, how does my mom find success???
