Hey everyone, I am just confused about my school's IEP. I am not in IEP myself but my friend is and I'm constantly puzzled about things she says they do. I'm a freshman in HS and she is a sophomore. She tells me has trouble explaining things and she struggles with writing sentences in ways that make sense sometimes. Because of this apparently she is not supposed to have any written response questions on tests. This greatly confuses me because I thought having IEP would assist in better understanding of certain subjects, sort of similar to tutoring, where they would work their way up and help them to overcome any challenges instead of just eliminating the problem altogether. But maybe it's only for tests. I don't know if this is because of IEP or not but for our WIN classes she gets pulled out of class and goes outside. For what I'm not exactly sure. I'm still not sure if this is related or not but another girl leaves my art class sometimes and apparently my friend in IEP knows her because they are in there together. The IEP teacher allows them to come to her whenever. My art teacher didn't like the girl in my art class go once because it was a presentation day and she had to be there to get the full grade for the actual presenting portion in her group. My friend in IEP had told me that the girl in my art class should have been allowed to go and that my art teacher should not have made her stay in class. I don't think it's a huge deal because my art teacher lets her go often now, she only held her there once because she wanted the girl to get the full presentation grade. Is my school's IEP even functioning correctly? My county's schools aren't always known to be the best no matter how good the grades may show in the ranking. The middle school we have down here is somehow worse than my current school/the HS.
Oh and not to mention that one of my friend's old teacher's had been mean to her most of the year, yelling at her for not understanding certain things, but when the teacher found out she was in IEP she started being nice to her only because of that. Isn't that weird?
I want to better understand IEP and it's members but I don't want to ask around about it IRL because I don't want to seem weird to anyone. I also want to make sure that my friend is learning what she needs. I am not 100% what career she's aiming for but I think she mentioned wanting to be an interior designer. Being an interior designer requires lots of writing and explaining and I hope she gets prepared for that in her FCS class. Can anyone explain IEP to me? I need more than just a google search.
