Successful First Year at College Despite What My Advisor Said Would Happen

I am a 26 yo non-traditional student that very recently decided (with major support from my wife) to go back to school to become a middle school teacher. When I was 18/19, I made a lot of bad decisions and one of them was wasting an entire year at community college by paying for classes and never showing up. This left me with a 1.76 GPA but my 18/19 self didn't care and never retook classes.

Fast forward six years later, I am applying to a university that my wife was recently hired at. Surprisingly, I got accepted but have to talk to an advisor to sign up for classes and talk about my GPA. This advisor was the rudest person I had ever met and I was an EMT for 5 years and had some rough patients. She told me I should have never been accepted into the school and frankly, I will flunk out by the end of my first semester. All because of my previous experience with college. I told her well that was 6 years ago and I am a different person now etc. She goes, "I doubt that." Ended up awkwardly signing up for classes with her and left.

I ended up finishing my first semester with a 3.4 GPA and the following semester with a 3.6 GPA. So my overall GPA sits in the 2.8 range. Just wanted to say to others like me who are older and did badly the first time around that you can always go back and get the degree you want. Don't let negative people tell you that you can't do that because of your past.

TLDR: I was a bad student when I was 18 and went back to school at 26 and an advisor said I wouldn't finish a semster. Finished the year with a 3.5 average.
