How do I report my district for sucking at food?

They give out poptarts at breakfast and cold pasta at lunch. Who can I report this to? I've eaten at the cafetieria for years, but since a new vendor began supplying things have gone way down hill. Kids are literally throwing away their meals as "crap", and I know the population of kiddos this program is supposed to be targeting is not getting served.'

POC Literature, future English teacher?

I have a friend who is Mexican American who is going to be an English teacher. I am as well. All she does is read classic books by white authors basically putting them on a pedestal. She mentioned that although she likes POC literature, she feels more connected to work by dead, white authors, particularly men (Salinger, Whitman, Wordsworth). It’s not just for authors, she also mentioned, feeling connected to white musicians.

As a future educator, I mentioned the importance of diverse literature and having a wide array of books in the classroom.

While I love classic literature too, I also understand the importance of uplifting POC voices that are not always recognized.

I also told her there might be something deeper at play with her identity but she says thats just the way things are for her. I’m not sure what else to say or to just let it go.

Looking for help generating some ideas for an education position paper. I am struggling to come up with ideas.

"Pick an issue in education and write a paper where you present different sides of your chosen topic."

It has a reasonably short length requirement of 1500 words. Not really concerned about the writing, but I am just struggling to come up with a good topic to write about.

Any help is appreciated!

Will Thematic math word problems have a better chance at getting students to read the entire problem and put considerable effort into understanding the problem?

I’m building a tool where students would get math word problems rewritten to have a theme of their interest, without the need for teachers to put any effort. The numbers and the answer of the problem would be the same as the original. You can see an example below.

Original problem:

Last year at Newberg's airport, 14507 passengers landed on time. Unfortunately, 213 passengers landed late. In all, how many passengers landed at the airport last year?

Thematic problem with Iron Man as theme:

Last year at stark's base, 14507 refugees landed on time. Unfortunately, 213 refugees landed late. In all, how many refugees landed at the base last year?

I want to hear the thoughts of teachers and students if a tool like this would be helpful to increase the chances of giving the initial hook that students need to willingly read word problems because I’ve seen that students don’t bother to read the entire question to understand the actual problem and if the contents are boring to them then they don’t even bother making an attempt.

If you have any suggestions or thoughts about how this would be good or bad please let me know!

I've not been in school my whole life. Any help is appreciated

Hello, I'm 16 (soon to be 17 in a few days on the first of november). Would it be too late to go back to high school, or GED? I don't even want to count it as homeschool. My dad taught me very little, no curriculum to follow, teaching was sparse (months or years could go by without any teaching; he kinda expected me to learn myself), and I don't know how to do fractions or long division. The subject he taught was pretty much just math as the others weren't as extensive. Basically, everything I know is from myself, and I really haven't studied anything as the years gone by. He gave up on me learning the subjects at least a year ago. I don't like living like this. My parents make us live like shit. I have no education, haven't went outside more than maybe 5 times this year, socially inept, cps was called over one time and they said our extremely messy house was a fire hazard (it's only gotten worse), sleep schedule always changes later and later, hard to focus with distractions at home (sharing rooms), staring at the computer/device for 12-14+ hours per day, and many more.

Having so many gaps in my knowledge, would the high school even fix my knowledge of elementary and middle school knowledge? I'd assume they only focus on high school material. If I enroll, how would I graduate faster, other than taking summer school? I really don't want to be 20 by the time I graduate. I feel old just sitting next to people years younger than me as well.

I don't know how the school system works as I never went to one, but I googled some stuff. I'm in Texas by the way.

If I assume a school year is 200 days for me with summer school, and classes are 5 hours. Would I be able to graduate in 3 years? (school year x class length) (3 years) / 120 = 25 credits
I see that typically you need 22-26 credits to graduate. Is this realistic or not? I don't think I'm well prepared, but assuming I don't fail anything, would it take longer with the lack of knowledge? There are so many words I don't know. I also don't even know how to form sentences. It's mostly a gut feeling, and I probably have many grammar mistakes. I don't know what subject-verb agreement, passive voice, adverbs, clauses are for example. They're probably easy to learn if I took the time to do so. I think my grades would poor as well. I haven't had a conversation with my parents in a long time because I am shy; however, I think I have to tell them soon, or it'll get worse.

Not to mention I have 2 other brothers who have no education, and in the same situation I've described above. One is 19 next month, and youngest is 14. Is it too late to go back to high school? Even for the 19 yo? He's not being productive at all. We all suck at everything tbh.

British student wants to retake Year 13 in the US.

Story: I'm 18-years-old from the UK, 19 in a couple months. I did my A-levels earlier on in 2022, but didn't do very well. Wasn't sure what do so just took a gap year. A couple days ago, my parents told me we were moving to the US. Not clear where exactly yet, most likely Los Angeles. I wasn't opposed to the idea, quite excited actually. But it got me thinking, can I repeat the last year of American high school now? Like apply for a school in LA mid-year? I'd like to go to university, and doing it in the US is something I'd probably do. Obviously I'd be one school year ahead of everyone, not sure how much of a problem that would be.

I've seen a lot of movies based in US schools, they look much better than European schools, so this is something I'd really like to do.

Any advice/answers much appreciated.

I've been homeschooled since 4th grade can I go back to school?

As said in the title I've been homeschooled about for 9 years now. I am very much behind on everything. I am somewhat decent at math though. I am currently 17 turning 18 early next year. If I were to go back to high school what would happen? I would absolutely not be up to speed with my peers. Would they give me some type of special help to get me to catch up? I would be a senior right now but obviously they wont put me in as a senior, though I would hope at least a junior so I will be with people that are at least within a year or two of my age. I could go for my GED then go to CC for 2 years then transfer but I want to get the full 4 year college experience and I highly doubt they will accept me with just a GED.

Should I stay in my Charter School or go to a Magnet School?

Hi! I am currently in 8th grade and go to a charter school. Now in 11th-12th grade my school let’s you take college classes alongside your high school classes. At a magnet school I would get to focus my career and possibly get a higher curriculum. For a magnet school I would have to wake up very school and take a 30 minute bus ride to school and 2 hour bus ride back. Also, I would leave all of my friends behind. Which one would be better for colleges? Thanks in advance!

Is learning through competition a valid concept?

Long story short - I have a very engaging job doing React (specifically React Native) on daily basis, and I felt like I have been not touching different areas of React while doing so, and I didn't want to be left behind.

So after thinking about how I can change that, I came up with an app idea that would maybe help me stay in the loop with React trends.

As a user, I wanted to assert my current level of knowledge and get exposed to different types of React questions, and get feedback and insights if I am not on the right path.

The main idea of the app is that you get a set of questions that you need to answer first, then get feedback if you are correct, and afterward get access to an article or documentation explaining a specific concept, task, etc. Afterward, the app will adjust my "knowledge level" based on how I did and serve me with harder questions.

Currently, a few of my developer friends are using the app with me and we are trying to figure out if the concept is valid, but we would love to hear any feedback possible, especially from people that are in the industry.

And yeah, it also can help you get prepared for the interview.

If you are interested in more info, you can check it up here, but the main concept is explained in the post.

I NEED HELP

Long story short I'm taking an IB course next year so I'll be a diploma programee. The country I'm in has one IB school and English is a second language here. So I basically have to relearn everything in English. Well that itself isn't a problem because I studied abroad in my earlier years and I'm fluent in English. However, my country's English class is basically dumbed-down compared to foreign schools so I'm kinda worried. So can anyone share pdf files or an app that can help me get a recap of different subjects(English, Math, Chem, Bio, History, etc) till grade 9 that will be great!

Looking for group activities and bonding exercise examples

Hey, I am looking for examples of group bonding exercises for my class. I know Harvard Business school had some pdfs that I found helpful last year, but I can't find them.

One example exercise is groups of 4 people asking each other questions individually. The most thought-provoking question wins the round, and people discover unusual things about the others.

College preparation, help 🥲

I’m going back to school soon, but I feel like I’m not ready, or like I’m not smart enough, so while I’m out I wanted to try to study or get some basic preparation on my own. Anything or any website that you guys recommend?

For some back story, basically I started college last year (sept. 2021). At the time I was going through a lot of things, moving out of a toxic house and having to work more, and because of that I only went for a month, I ended up having issues with financial aid, so now I owe them a bit of money, that I am currently paying back in order to go back to school.

My issue is that I don’t feel prepared. I feel like I’m not ready for college classes, and the reason why I feel like this is because, I was born here but I went to a different country when I was 8, then I came back to America when I was 16. I did half of my sophomore year and a bit of junior year, but Covid hit and fucked everything up so learning was even harder, especially while being in a toxic environment.

I speak English very well, but I just feel like I need more when it comes to writing college level things and all that. So if you guys have any tips or advice I’ll gladly take it :)

Honest question. Why are High School students required to pass every subject in order to graduate?

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question but I've always wondered this. When I was in High School, I failed Chemistry and I had to take "special remedial classes" in the summer in order for me to move on to the next grade. The question I asked myself back then is still relevant now because I still don't have the answer to it. "Why do I have to pass this class if I know I won't use this at all in the future?" I'm not against taking the class. It's a requirement after all. My issue at hand was actually needing to PASS the class. I had no problem with taking the class as a subject in school. As a matter of fact, I didn't "half-ass" the class even though I didn't like it. I genuinely tried my hardest but the subject was just too difficult in the end. The major issue arose when the subject became a major nuisance to the point that I had to waste my entire summer making up for it even if I clearly knew that I wouldn't be needing it in the future.

Fast forward to today and I think my stance was justified. After I graduated High School, I went to college and I took up a degree which was definitely not chemistry. I took up a Business Management degree with a special focus on Marketing and Mass Communications.

Right now, I work in the Human Resources department of an advertising agency. I use the concepts I learned from my Mass Communication classes for things such as organizational development, recruitment, and employee evaluation. On the other hand, I use the concepts I learned from my Marketing classes in order to understand the nature of the advertising industry as a whole and how our agency helps clients solve their marketing problems. I definitely apply the things I learned from my degree and I can say for sure that I never used the things I learned in my Chemistry class.

So yeah, the question I asked myself back then is still relevant now. Why did I have to waste an entire summer just to pass that class? Am I justified in my stance knowing where I am today?

General rant

https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/oct/06/nyu-professor-fired-maitland-jones-jr-student-petition

I’ve been thinking about this NYU professor and it sort of gave me a mix of opinions. Btw this is all an opinion from a student that has worked with disabled college students/children in a learning setting.

University/College/High School don’t do enough for different students: For example university and college schedules are only centered around the traditional student that immediately leaves high school and attends college with no part/full-time job. Ultimately these limited schedules make classes inaccessible for both older and younger students with outside responsibilities. On top of that other than rate my professor there isn’t a way to get a professor/teacher that matches your learning style or needs. In some cases students with ADHD need professors that provide a simple structure for classes and direct instructions (no discussing of minor details). Other students with learning disabilities are rarely taken into account when being put in a class with a fast-paced professor. Teacher compatibility is important and if more action was done to figure out the teachers teaching style and students learning style then it could be easier to efficiently learn. This wouldn’t call out professors/teachers instead it would show off their pros as a instructor. Providing lists for recommended professors like: recommended for full-time workers, recommended for part-time workers, recommended for parents (able to miss lecture frequently), recommended for fast-paced learners.. etc

Academic language/Gatekeeping information/Technical Writing Skills: A frequent complaint I’ve heard is that it’s hard to study or as the NYU professor said students just aren’t studying as hard. I would say two things can be true at once. It is really easy for someone to blame the pandemic or smart phones but we need to focus on the state of the world right now and the limitations that cause these issues. One of the stereotypes about stem professors is that they don’t know how to teach. I wouldn’t say that they don’t know how to teach but that don’t have the technical writing skills to properly layout their material. Look with the state of the U.S. right now we have high inflation, high gas prices, and lack of leisure time. Nearly three-fourths of college students can be considered a non traditional student meaning they have outside responsibilities. Many high school students have jobs as well. NOW think about coming home from a 6 or 8 hour shift and trying to study and only seeing notes with no headings/ unnecessary information/ lack of bullet points/ unnecessary academic language. This is the reality for many students and causes students to become overwhelmed, unmotivated, and quit. Being able to SKIM THROUGH notes is important for everybody regardless of their learning style. Adding different fonts to notes and simplifying academic language can make it easier for a student to study especially with the overwhelming state of the world right now. Melissa Marshall talks about this in greater detail in her Ted Talk: https://youtu.be/y66YKWz_sf0 Making material easy to read for students is one of the ways to break the barrier between student and teacher. This creates more opportunities for professors and teachers to actually ✨challenge✨ students. Having a student seek information for themselves or handing them a academic textbook and telling them to read it is not helpful and doesn’t actually challenge a person instead it just makes the information in accessible.

Outside factors/ lack of funding, parenting, healthcare/ teacher shortage/ classroom management: Lack of funding for public schools in high poverty areas can create unstable classroom environments. This isn’t coming from any specific study but my own personal experience. Growing up I realized how many of the trouble makers where just undiagnosed. There are many racial/ethnic disparities in children being diagnosed with autism. Boys that should have had cognitive behavioral therapy. There is not enough funding provided in low income areas to deal with these kinds of students. The general attitude towards teachers isn’t helping either. Overworked, overwhelmed, and underpaid teachers have to deal with 100 things at once and adding a undiagnosed disruptive children/teens to the mix can throw the classroom into a chaotic mess. In addition to that a lot of classroom management practices actually sacrifices the quiet student.. putting the loud kid next to the smart kid further interrupts that child’s peace. Finding ways to stop disruptive children from ruining a classroom environment is hard. Many teachers have asked for aides and lower classroom ratios. All a school counselor can do is suspect that a child/teen has something. It is up to the parent to take these warnings and use them efficiently. Unfortunately with lack of health insurance or leisure time to miss work that can be impossible for parents. There are also just bad parents that do not care. In states like Texas school linked mental health programs are required but are they efficient. Are these programs helping the neglected, unmotivated, disruptive children/teens enough? Are teachers being provided with the necessary tools they are asking for?I’m not SURE :D all I know is we have a teacher shortage right now so I’m guessing the answer is no?

There are so many aspects to the education system that needs to fixed. There are also outside factors that effect people’s ability to access education. It is nobody’s fault in particular we just need to provide resources. Listen to complaints. Research how you can help. Donate to teacher’s wish’s list. Vote for people that actually care about educators. Get a library card. Pay attention to the people around us. Get involved in our own communities in anyway we can.

Greater STL-based and Black/LGBTQIA/Asian-owned EDUrain.org needs your vote to win a chance to get a $100,000 Grant in the TechRise Finale

December 1, 2022, 6 of the top Founders who have appeared and won in the TechRise weekly Pitch Competition will compete onstage to win $100K.

EDUrain.org is a marketplace similar to apartments.com, however, we have a free credit-building program that is proven to make our students more reliable tenants and in turn more attractive as renters. We’ve also integrated key features such as roommate search, background checks, and renter’s insurance to streamline the student rental process. We provide our platform to colleges as a free white-label program positioning EDUrain as the official off-campus housing platform for that college. This platform is a closed ecosystem so students and landlords can interact in an environment that supports the student through what many students see as their first time renting and throughout their renting process in college.

EDUrain won a $25,000 grant on the TechRise Stage on June 24, 2022, and was then deemed eligible to compete for a chance to pitch for $100,000 in grant funding in the TechRise Finale! But, EDUrain cannot do that without your vote! EDUrain needs 1,000 votes to secure its spot on the TechRise stage! Link to vote for EDUrain in Block D here: https://www.tallyspace.com/6340503128aee

As a startup that has all minority founders and everyone under 30 years old, raising money has been extremely tough. We are not the most politically pushed and we are not backed by the biggest investors. We are a small group of young adults who come from a variety of minority groups. Every rejection we get has said we won’t be able to organize a community going towards the same goal and that it would be difficult for us to gain college partnerships. While in this competition we have closed on 4 colleges. We now need to show we can organize a community to vote. A vote for EDUrain means that you think every Black, LGBTQIA, Asian, Student, Foster-care youth, and in general any person should have a chance to chase their dreams in building a social impact startup that can change the world and that you can launch from St. Louis and the world will see you!

Thinking about doing online school Senior year

Hello I am a 16yr old male who’s currently a junior in high school. Ever since I started high school I have hated it for many reasons. I missed my freshman year which I feel threw off a lot of things for me. I’ve always been a pretty well known guy, I’m friends with many people, I get grades, and workout and stay active. The problem is I am “friends” with everyone but for some reason no relationship has gone further than just being a school buddy. I don’t think people understand this feeling, the only texts I receive throughout the day is from my parents. I don’t hangout with people outside of school for 6 months at a time. This is a terrible feeling showing up to school and people saying what’s up and interacting with you like they are a good friend then never wanting to do anything more than that, it makes you feel worthless like a side character. Second of all I have a handful things I do on the side such as cinematography, creative photography, fitness, and fashion related work. Senior year I have to get a job, I don’t believe I would have time to continue working and pursuing these arts while having a job and getting great grades in school. I believe having time for these arts in exchange for an online school schedule would be so valuable to me. Many other reasons i have but I’m just curious peoples thoughts on this. I can even do 1-2 days on campus but mainly online school.

For anyone in the United States that is working/employed. It's to see what needs/benefits are most important to you as a working. Seven items are listed, need 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 put in the boxes as you rank them.

I very much appreciate anyone that takes time to help. Link is in comments.

Is it a good idea to departmentalize for 5th grade?

My team is considering dividing up into 1) math 2) ELA and 3) Science and social studies.

We have 3 teachers. Each of us would teach only one of the subjects and we would rotate.

Is this a good idea? I think from a practical mindset it makes sense: less planning means we can focus more on making good lessons for our subjects. But is it too young to do this?

Thoughts?

the system where kids look forward to month or two month long vacations is bad maybe; if theyre not going to be reviewing or studying during that pwriod

I think the majority of young people growing up get in the bad habit of finishing the class so that they dont have to worry about it over there break and the break is just for having as much fun as possible when theyre likely to forget a lot of what theyve been going to class for.

I think they should be showing more applications of the content learned like using geometry in engineering or calculus or statistics for plant breeding so the kids arent primarily learning the material just to pass.... more responsible parents will ensure that is not happening but in my experience MOST parents are not doing this and kids are just passing and then forgetting a lot of it with these breaks.

They shouldnt get breaks like that until they can afford them. So tell em idc how long of a break you take (vacation) as long as you can afford it meaning theyre going to have to perform better and value the material more if theyre going to get a vacation because thatll provide them money if they learn the skills and use them to create income.

I think its irresponsible how the american education system has been running and very ineffective compared to how it could be. Stopping here because I believe ive said enough.

Advice for applying for a postgraduate research masters in education scholarship

(Posting this on a number of subreddits)

Hi all,

I am a new graduate with an undergraduate degree in education and psychology and am currently working full-time in an elementary school. Because of my undergraduate GPA, I recently got an invite from my college to apply for a Postgraduate Assistantship Scholarship in the US (I’m from Ireland). This scholarship would involve a research Masters in Education within a chosen specialism.

Just looking for some advice about how to craft a really good application. In our education system, we don’t have to write applications to college so I have no idea how to craft a really good application that hits all the points that the reader will want to see.

The headings of the application…

  1. Key experiences and achievements during your degree programme, elucidating your personal philosophy of education and how you integrated theory and practice during your degree programme

  2. How education research informed your understanding of teaching and learning

  3. How you envisage the scholarship would impact on your future career in education

  4. How you expect to contribute to the education postgraduate community in --- University.

I’m not trying to ask anyone to write the application for me! I am just wondering if there are key pieces of information I should really nail in the application and that would make me stand out from the rest of the applications, particularly headings 3 and 4. Side note: All tuition would be paid for on the condition that the successful candidate works for the college a certain number of hours per week.

Many, many thanks for any help or advice!!!

Tl;dr What are some things I should really be including in an application for a Postgraduate Assistantship Scholarship in a research masters of education programme?

When am I ever going to use this in real life?

High school math teacher here. Kids like to ask me this question as they roll their teenage eyes, but little do they know, this is my favorite question to be asked. I know the answer to this question.

The factoring we are practicing right now? When will you use that again? Probably never. That's not what I'm teaching you. My goals are to teach you patience, perseverance, bravery when faced with adversity, how to make a plan, how to follow that plan, work with a team, work alone, and how to explain your thought processes to others.

Let me ask you this. When will (in real life) someone ask you to write an essay on Shakespeare? Run a timed mile? Balance a chemical equation? Identify the contents of a cell? Write a paper on an event that happened a century ago? Probably never.

When will (in real life) would you need to know how to summarize ideas, communicate with others, stay physically and mentally healthy, think logically, understand the world we live in, and learn from past mistakes in our history so we can avoid them in the future? Always. You will almost always need these things.

And, frankly, students need to be exposed to many different things to see what they like. Maybe you didn't like math as a kid. That's fine. Some people do. Some people make it their career. I like finding those people.

I hope students leave my classroom happy. Somedays that's enough. But I also hope they leave curious, and maybe slightly more ready in some deep way for the world ahead of them. That's why I love teaching.

I can't wait for the next kid to ask me this.

Worthwhile skills to cultivate while preparing to teach

Hi everyone,

I'm working towards becoming a science teacher (interested in HS level Bio) after my 20s were spent in the military and doing skilled trade work. I am graduating my local community college with an AS in Bio, but am moving states (from IL to Minneapolis, if that is relevant to the discussion) so will be taking a year off of any schooling. I have taken some 100-level education courses at the CC, though none of them involved in-school experiences due to the pandemic. I've never worked with kids/teens, but really enjoyed the mentorship aspect of the military and feel that teaching public school is a calling.

I hoped to hear advice about how my time would be best spent in the free time that I have. I've been working full time while taking college courses for years, and feel that I will have a lot of energy to expend without classes taking up time. I have looked into the local teachers' union, and they offer a student teacher membership that grants access to resources, but it is for those currently enrolled in a program; I will not be for at least another year.

Basically: knowing what you know now, what would you have done to best prepare yourself for teaching? Should I volunteer to work with children at a boys&girls club or something similar, focus on academic preparations (studying bio, math, chem, etc) to remain fresh for university level classes, reach out to local teachers for their experiences, or something totally different?

Thanks in advance, and thank you all for the work that you do.

What’s a good politically neutral university in the U.S?

My brother wants to send my nephew to a uni In the U.S. I’ve learned through the internet and media that some uni’s and colleges are highly politically aligned to either sides of the political spectrum , left or right , and wanted to know if it’s all B.S or if anyone knows colleges that are somewhat neutral . I want my nephew to meet all kinds of people and make his own decisions . I ask this coz I don’t want my nephew indoctrinated into a certain way of thinking by his curriculum or the values that the college pushes . Note: I myself am not politically inclined , am mostly on the side that’s right , but gun to my head , I’m mostly liberal .

What degree do I need to have as an inspired globalist?

Currently a travel technician working with renewable energy but also working on finishing my BA in Communication Design. Afterwards I want to get my masters in some type of field that will tie in to my ideals as a globalist. I just don't know where to start. I'm aware it sounds like a lot, but it's all part of my plan to at least fix something on this planet. There's so much wrong with it. I was considering environmental research but I'll take any suggestions on what to look into. I have about a year and a half left to I'm done with my current degree.

Are professor more flexible with foreign exchange student?

I’ve come across people that graduated from a university with a bachelors degree in the USA and I just wonder to myself how did they graduate? Not to judge but their English wasn’t so great and when it came to speaking I can hear incomplete sentences or bad grammar. Makes me wonder how their writing assignments are like. Do they get help from a program? I’m born and raised in USA and I’m struggling to pass my English class and public speaking. Just seeing foreign exchange student that could barley speak and graduate from a university makes me jealous.

Starting a educational/tutoring center -> Advice needed on lesson structure

Hi all,

Situation/background

  • We are currently in ideation phase of a new project -> a STEM educational/tutoring center
  • Idea is to offer structured alternative to ad-hoc 121 tutoring, i.e. regular 1-2x per week lessons in a small group (~5 students) which would follow school curriculum but sometimes go wider or deeper on certain topics
  • Plan is that the center is STEM focused, starting with math for grades 1-8 and potentially expanding in other subjects and grades later

Our experience

  • Combined partners & I have 10+ years of experience of 121 tutoring (for all grades/ages) as well as TA-ing courses at college level

Main question

  • In the geographical area we plan to operate, a typical class length in school is 45min or 90min long
  • We'd like to make 'studying' at our center unique experience with regards to teaching strategy and lesson structure
  • As purely an example of what I mean by this, instead of having typical 45min class, we could have:
    • 30min theory - where teacher introduces new concepts or revises last lesson's concepts
    • 20min problem solving - where students would solve problems individually
    • 30min theory - where teacher continues new concept introduction

Could anyone recommend me some material/books/videos/whatever which explores different kind of class structure, or simply share their thoughts openly?

I'd like to learn best practices and not re-invent the wheel :)

Thanks a lot!

Last minute teachers college decision? Advice

I’m a fourth year student in my undergrad studying Law and Society, I was never passionate about being a lawyer or anything, I’ve always wanted to be a teacher but thought it was too late because I’ve already chose my major in Law.

Did some research and found out I can do a consecutive BEd program! I’m not sure what’s next, I don’t have volunteer experience nor do I have a great GPA. And it’s my last year in my undergrad

I am looking for various volunteer opportunities I can take before I start applying, any tips on what else I should be looking out for or what I can do to increase my chances to being accepted?

Professional Resume and its Advantages

The word resume originates from the French word “resume” meaning `summary`. About 1481–1482, Leonardo Da Vinci officially created and credited with the number one resume. His “resume” takes the configuration of a letter written to a cappotential employer, “Ludovico Sforza”. A resume proceeds to be an insignificant account of a person that includes their competencies and past or professional experiences, for an extended time. In the early 1900s, resumes filed things like their personal dossiers along side height, weight, marital status, religion, etc.

Advantages of a Resume

In the contemporary-day project market, the resume has end up the primary requirement of cappotential employers request. Before attending an interview, an employer wants to meet the employee — on paper which shows how the employee has executed withinside the past. This resume shows the employee`s particular talents and competencies and they’re capable of understand what an employee can do for the firm. How an employee can impress the employer collectively alongside together along with his resume may want to make all the difference to competing with distinct candidates.

AP classes on a block schedule

My school has considered going to a block schedule for several years now. Without getting into all the details I will say it could provide us with many advantages. But the biggest hurdle is AP classes. Many probably already know the issue but to make it clear: If I teach my AP class in the fall my kids don't take the test until May. So several months away from the material. If my class is in the spring, the test happens almost a month before the end of the year so I lose a lot of class time to cover the material. I have to think some smart people out there have a good solution to this problem. So if you know of any I would love to hear them! Thanks!

I’m 24 and I want to go to college again. I need some advice.

I already have a bachelors degree back home but then my family and I moved to another country. I can’t and don’t want to use my bachelors degree here as I think that its just not for me and instead, I want to go to college again and study Nursing. My dad and mom separated and as the eldest in the family, I now pay a big chunk of the finances in the house so quitting work is not an option. Is it possible to just get one or two courses a semester? Would I be too behind if I do that? Am I too old to go back to school again? I have so many worries and I really need another person’s opinion.

What’s your opinion of Common Core?

I’m a young 2nd year teacher. Some family, friends, and strangers will ask me my opinion on common core. I don’t know enough about it.

Isn’t it just a list of things we have to teach? Doesn’t every place do that? Why do/don’t teachers, parents, etc. like it? Not sure if it has to do with my age or length of teaching when something changed.

What humanity has come to

My 6th grade geography teacher would give us multiple study guides with conflicting information, tell us we weren’t aloud to use any other sources to study, and then take points off of our tests when we got the answers “wrong.”

My 7th grade history teacher had a picture Robert. E. Lee on his desk and couldn’t remember the names of half the girls in my class. I had him for two years.

In 8th grade the same teacher made us spend half the year working on a giant research project without teaching us any of the skills we needed to do the actual research, then resigned at the end of the year without even grading them.

My 9th grade science teachers taught an entire unit on methemoglobinemia without actually knowing how to pronounce “methemoglobin.”

My stats teacher doesn’t believe in the Monty Hall problem and spent a whole class period explaining to us that it’s BS.

It’s been several years since the last time I saw a science work sheet that didn’t have at least one major grammatical error that made several of the questions on it completely nonsensical.

This is what passes as a “privileged education” and people still wonder why flat earthers are a thing.

Should I apply to study abroad in Russia?

For about 2 years now till I finish high school this year, I've been planning to continue my studies in Russia because I love this country without the need to explain why, I've also been learning Russian and I can say that I am B1 at it.

But now, considering what's happening with Russia, is it a bad decision to study abroad in Russia ?
I feel so sad because I've been planning to study in Russia and live there because I love this country, but I think I will have to change my plan to Germany perhaps and start learning German now.

What do you think?
