I have a friend who is Mexican American who is going to be an English teacher. I am as well. All she does is read classic books by white authors basically putting them on a pedestal. She mentioned that although she likes POC literature, she feels more connected to work by dead, white authors, particularly men (Salinger, Whitman, Wordsworth). It’s not just for authors, she also mentioned, feeling connected to white musicians.
As a future educator, I mentioned the importance of diverse literature and having a wide array of books in the classroom.
While I love classic literature too, I also understand the importance of uplifting POC voices that are not always recognized.
I also told her there might be something deeper at play with her identity but she says thats just the way things are for her. I’m not sure what else to say or to just let it go.
