I’m building a tool where students would get math word problems rewritten to have a theme of their interest, without the need for teachers to put any effort. The numbers and the answer of the problem would be the same as the original. You can see an example below.
Original problem:
Last year at Newberg's airport, 14507 passengers landed on time. Unfortunately, 213 passengers landed late. In all, how many passengers landed at the airport last year?
Thematic problem with Iron Man as theme:
Last year at stark's base, 14507 refugees landed on time. Unfortunately, 213 refugees landed late. In all, how many refugees landed at the base last year?
I want to hear the thoughts of teachers and students if a tool like this would be helpful to increase the chances of giving the initial hook that students need to willingly read word problems because I’ve seen that students don’t bother to read the entire question to understand the actual problem and if the contents are boring to them then they don’t even bother making an attempt.
If you have any suggestions or thoughts about how this would be good or bad please let me know!
