Does anyone else dislike the term "Gifted"?

You have likely heard this term many times. It is in reference to people who have a certain skill that goes beyond what is seen as the norm. I don't like this term at all. In education it is often used to refer to kids that seem to excel in school. They're seen as the peak of intelligence. I think everyone has the potential to be gifted in something, but a lot of the skills people have the potential in aren't cultivated. The education system, in the U.S. specifically, marginalizes everything. We're expected to have certain skills in order to be successful. If you don't, you're just not "Gifted" enough. Then on the opposite side of the spectrum, people that are labeled in this way have their own problems. The weight of being labeled as Gifted is not something to take lightly. Now you can't mess up at all because everyone expects you to do amazingly. You are believed to have great potential and to be successful even if you have another idea for the path you want to take. This weight builds and all of a sudden you believe you have to always act perfectly in order to hold up this image of being Gifted. You want to follow people's expectations. Either way, the label of being gifted is bad. It either makes you feel dumb or like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. It is a lose-lose situation. What do you think?

Teachers spend 40% of their time on admin; should AI take that load instead?

A recent report revealed that teachers are increasingly utilizing AI for planning lessons, creating materials, and grading. For some, it's saving hours every week.

But here's the big question: if AI takes over the repetitive tasks, do we actually free up teachers to connect more deeply with students, or do schools end up piling more work on them instead?

What do you think, could AI realistically give teachers more teaching time? Or will it just shift the workload elsewhere?

My roommate spent our grocery money on AI subscriptions and accidentally saved my GPA

So my idiot roommate Jake decided to "invest" our shared grocery fund into every AI subscription he could find. I was pissed until I realized he basically became a human guinea pig for all of us.

Three weeks and a lot of ramen later, here's what actually works:

The Good Stuff:

ChatGPT Plus ($20)
Jake's go-to when he's stuck on literally anything. Helped him not fail calculus (barely). Never says "usage limit reached" which is honestly life-changing when you're cramming at 3am.

Perplexity Pro ($20)
This thing is scary good at research. Jake used it for his poli sci paper and the prof asked where he found sources that recent. Automatically does citations too so you don't have to format MLA at 4am.

Claude Pro ($20)
The "smart kid" AI. Better at complex thinking but kinda pretentious sometimes. Jake swears it made his philosophy papers sound less stupid.

The Meh:

Gemini Advanced ($20)
Cool Google integration but gets weird about controversial topics. Jake tried writing about gun policy and it basically gave him a kindergarten-level response.

Grok Premium ($30)
Basically expensive Twitter with attitude. Jake cancelled after one month because who has $30 for AI sass?

Plot twist:

Jake's grades went from C average to mostly B's. Not because AI did his work, but because he could actually understand wtf was going on in his classes for once.

What I learned lurking over his shoulder:

  • STEM majors: ChatGPT Plus. Math explanations don't suck.
  • Liberal arts: Claude Pro for deep stuff, ChatGPT for everything else
  • Need citations: Perplexity Pro or you'll cry formatting references
  • Actually broke: Rotate free versions like Jake should have done initially

Real talk:

Is paying for AI worth skipping meals? Probably not. But if you're using it daily during hell weeks, yeah it pays for itself in sanity points.

Jake's still alive, his GPA isn't trash anymore, and we learned to budget better. Win-win?

Anyone else's friends do dumb financial decisions that accidentally worked out? Or am I the only one living with a human AI tester?

PS: We got our grocery money back by tutoring other people using Jake's new AI setup. Modern problems, modern solutions.

So many people leave school without knowing how to budget, save, or even understand loans. Why isn’t this a thing yet?

Working in Education without being a teacher?

So I have been eyeing education because I genuinely hate working in the summer. I know most people do, but I can’t imagine myself working in the summer (and certain holidays) for the next 40 years. I feel like a school schedule could best suit my work needs.

What are the best jobs in education that do not involve being a teacher? I’m only aware of school nurse and guidance counselor.

Struggling with 5 backlogs in BSc Physics (Solapur University) – Only 2 months left, need advice

I took admission in BSc Physics at Solapur University back in 2019. Due to personal responsibilities and lack of time, I couldn’t focus much on studies, and now I still have 5 backlogs. This is my final chance to clear them, and I only have about 2 months left.

I’m under a lot of pressure because I don’t want to lose the degree after all these years. The problem is, I can’t dedicate full-time study hours because of family/work responsibilities.

Can anyone suggest:

How to prepare smartly for multiple backlogs in limited time?

What should I prioritize (previous year papers, important questions, notes)?

Any tips from people who managed to clear backlogs in their last attempt?

Any advice or motivation will be really helpful.

Does anyone use RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) calculators?

I still have my old HP 11c RPN calculator, and I just love how RPN works. I feel like it keeps my brain more focused on the math, rather than worrying about math punctuation! With regular calculators, it is so tedious to type in parentheses and equal signs -- one typo and it's wrong and you spend more time editing a parenthesis than thinking about math!

I just was wondering if it's ever taught at all, or if anyone uses it.

A Plan of Action for Resistance: Teacherless Tuesday

I don't think you start with a strike.

Teacherless Tuesday is a system by which there are too many teachers gone every tuesday for the school to function correctly.

It is not a strike and no one violates any but the most extreme policies, which need breaking anyway.

We need a trick, and a good one.

One where we are blameless and untouchable. One that confers the least harm. One that is fun and offers joyful revelry as we shit in their chocolate pies and just laugh and laugh and laugh.

In the name of he who owns all the stories:

Start with getting subs on board not to fill roles. This won't be a big deal. Sub shortages everywhere.

Of all the players they would take the least hit to finances and career because they aren't forced to sub and can't be compelled. If they don't wanna cover Tuesday there's fuck all anyone can do about it.

I would like to pursue Master's in Spain

Hi! I am from Azerbaijan, and I am turning 26 in November. I have university degree in Organization and Management of Industry. After 3 years of graduation I am considering to pursue Master's overseas. I love Spain, it's culture, people, I am learning Spanish, so I really feel like I will feel good enough in Spain (not depending on my income). So I am considering taking Master's in Spain, try to adapt to society (I believe I will in a short period of time), and live among spanish people. It's been 10 years since I moved to Azerbaijan from Kazakhstan, and I can't adapt here. So the only option I see is to continue my education and move from here. I am a humble, secular guy, I don't interfere in someone's life, culture, religion and etc.. I have European appearance (appearance doesn't matter, but still has some role everywhere), so I hope that it will not be hard for me to adapt to Spain and feel good even among sensitive people who may not like migrants.

I would like to get your opinion on this (who lives in Spain, studies and etc.). Thanks!

Business degree advice , major analytics , minor finance ??

My long-term goal is to build a high paying future proof career (ideally millionaire path one day, dont judge pls) I want to balance $$ with not hating my job. I’m not keen on crazy banking hours forever, but I also don’t want to be stuck doing low-ceiling roles. I mean down the road i hope get to a C-suite position

So my questions are: 1. Do you think BA + Finance minor is a good combo compared to just BA or just Finance? 2. What kind of job roles / career paths would this realistically lead to in SG, US, or Australia? 3. How’s the work-life balance like in these roles? 4. For those already working in analytics/finance, would you recommend this path, or is there a better pairing?

Would appreciate hearing from people who’ve done this path or are working in the field 🙏

Got into the University of Oxford but I am billed as an international student 😂

I managed to get into the University of Oxford to read Mechanical engineering as a Nigerian Immigrant to the UK.

I got here in March 2022, but I got denied Student finance because due to my immigration status, I don't qualify for student finance. I have a Limited leave to remain status, and saw on the gov.uk site that students with a LLR and who have already spent minimum of three years before uni.

However, I my LLR status is as a dependent on my mother who has a skilled worker visa. It turns out there's more nuance to an LLR status. I have applied

I am currently billed £59,260 per year instead of £9,535. 😂

I need to have spent half of my life or 20 years in the UK before applying for funding .

I will be going through clearing and rigorously applying for any financial support.

Nonetheless, I'm grateful that I applied and secured a place.

Online degree, worth it?

I will be studying bachelors mechanical engineering with honors in-person, starting this semester. I will be graduating in 2029 and pursuing a masters degree in the same field afterwards. I’m trying to strengthen my qualifications and have an even more expanded world view by the time I graduate, would it be wise to pursue (one of the following) a business or a physics bachelors degree? Maybe even computer science or economics? I plan on starting a manufacturing business.

I do not expect the education to be free but how much can I expect to pay a year at an institution with a recognized degree? Will the time invested into this endeavor be worth it? Is it a bad idea considering I’d need to split my time between two possibly unequal qualifications? Are there other options for strengthening my qualifications before graduation besides online university?

I’d really appreciate some people’s perspectives and experiences.

Thank you.

How does Education in China compare with the United States?

https://www.reddit.com/r/China/s/ljBOY8w2ij

  1. In the USA, we no longer care about testing… that’s called a “meritocracy” and it’s being discouraged.
  2. Gifted education is gone. We teach to the middle. Everyone gets the same education, unless…. You’re identified as entitled.
  3. We dedicate more resources to helping struggling demographics through Title 1, ELD, SPED.
  4. We focus on self-esteem and identity affirmation, PBIS, teaching proper behavior.
  5. There’s no consequence or reward for high state/national test scores for students or teachers, therefore there’s little effort to improve.
  6. In fact, since state imposed improvement plans for under-performing districts has faded, test scores have dropped. (But we blame that on Covid).

From the outside, it looks like a lot of stress on the Chinese students. It’s a good thing the world is not competitive.

Describing Sadhguru to a Room Full of Women Entrepreneurs – Feedback Needed

So I recently started doing a course on communication and as an exercise, was asked to describe Sadhguru to a room full of women entrepreneurs:

When I think of women entrepreneurs, the three words that come to my mind are – powerful, resilient and leaders and interestingly enough, these words can also be used to describe Sadhguru.

Sadhguru is a yogi who has empowered millions of people through his simple yet powerful yogic practices. He is a resilient leader who has withstood many a storm, all the while driving people to focus on their well being and improve their lives. His focus hasn’t just been on turning people inwards but also outwards to the environment and the social conditions around them. To this end, he has spearheaded several initiatives and campaigns which have found resonance amongst youth, farmers, tribals and celebs alike. As a leader, he will never tell you what you must do, rather empower you with the right tools so that you are able to do whatever is needed to the best of your abilities.

This is what I came up with. What do you think about it? Can I improve this piece in any way? Let me know!

Behind

I did my GCSE in 2024 May June time I didn’t pass because my teacher had changed my papers very last minute and I had to move to a tuition place which was very helpful but I didn’t pass my GCSEs. So starting the next academic year, I was put into this other tuition place because college didn’t feel right considering my current circumstances at the time they basically made broken promises saying that they’d get me to the GCSE level, but didn’t they never entered me in for any GCSEs like they said they would have done all I have now is just a level two functional skill in English. The math teacher there would sit on his phone while I’d be doing the paper he gave me which wasn’t even a GCSE paper like he said it would’ve been my science teacher would say have a five minute break and come back an hour later every single time if I’d ever question this they would give very vague responses I was supposed to have done my science since no college offers science GCSE where I am. I was supposed to have done my English and maths. now I’m not one year I’m two I wanted to start doing A-levels, but now I can’t because I’m gonna be too old which is what my college has said they can’t put me on those courses. I want to do it for the 2025 November intake but I’m honestly feeling very depressed because people my age are already looking at universities I feel like I won’t make any friends my age when I go to uni that is if I ever even get the chance does anyone know the quickest route for me to do a level 3? because i am capable. I’ve just been very deprived and had a lot of last-minute changes. please help I know it’s my story and not anybody else’s, but I just need help because I don’t want to be any more behind my peers :(

Data science engineering

Hello everybody ,I am an international student from Egypt currently completing my IGCSEs. I am very interested in applying for a Bachelor's degree in Data Science. Could you please let me know: 1. Whether UTSA accepts IGCSE qualifications for admission, and if so, what the minimum subject/grade requirements are. 2. If I will need to provide additional exams such as SAT, ACT, or English proficiency tests (e.g., TOEFL/IELTS). 3. Whether there are specific steps for international applicants from Egypt that I should follow.

I have written emails to UTSA, UT Austin and Texas A&M , is there any other good universities that have a bachelor is data science?

Have I totally ruined my life with my GCSE results ?

Have I totally fucked my life up with my GCSEs results ?

I keep having daydreams about my results and how much of a letdown they were. I got lower in my actual GCSEs than in my mocks. I know I should be over it by now and move on, but I feel like I should have “dumbass” plastered on my forehead. I worry that anyone who hears my results will think the same. It feels like I’ve ruined my life for good. GCSE Results: Maths = 5 English Language = 4 English Literature = 7 Science = 4/5 Child Development = 4 Business = 4 History = 3 In my mocks, I was getting 5s, 6s, and 7s, and I was planning on doing A levels—but clearly, I can’t anymore. Now I’m in college studying BTEC Level 3 Applied Science and Forensics, and honestly, I enjoy it much more than I think I would have enjoyed A levels. The course is fun and engaging, so that’s definitely an upside.

Opinions: Have I ruined my life with my GCSEs? Could people think badly of me after hearing my results?

  • will this ruin my chances of getting into college?

Hi everyone. I’m currently working on my master’s thesis, I’m in that stage where data collection feels like the biggest mountain to climb. My looks at how short-form travel videos (like Instagram Reels) can shape the way people see different countries and decide where to travel.

If you’ve ever been in this position, you know how much every single response matters. I’m aiming for around 350 to make my study solid, so if anyone here has a few minutes to spare, I’d be truly grateful for your input. [link]

Which University should I choose?

Hello everyone! I’m about to start my sophomore year at a community college in Missouri, and I’m planning to transfer next year into a nursing program. I’ve been looking into a few schools so far UMKC, Missouri State, and the University of Arkansas but I’m still pretty open to options.

What I’m hoping to find is a school that has a good balance: a good nursing program but also an active social/party scene. For reference, my GPA is currently a 3.2, but I still have 6–7 prerequisites left to take (depending on the school), so I’m aiming to raise it. This fall I’ll be taking my EMT classes, and I’m planning to apply for EMT positions in the winter. I’m hoping that kind of experience will look good on my applications.

The part that stresses me out is that I really don’t want to get declined and have to wait an extra year to apply. Since I may need an extra semester to finish my prereqs, I’m especially interested in programs that offer two admission cycles per year (fall and spring) so I’d have more flexibility. If anyone has recommendations for universities with nursing programs that might be a good fit, I’d love to hear them!

Struggling with my younger brother’s academics and lifestyle – need advice

Hi everyone,

I’m writing this on behalf of my younger brother who is currently in 7th grade. My parents have always been busy trying to earn a living, and as a result, his education has been a bit scattered. He has been shuffled between different home tutors over the years, which has completely shaken his foundation in studies.

Right now, my father does all of his homework for him. Because of that, my brother doesn’t take any interest in academics at all – he just rests, does nothing else, and has gained a lot of body fat. He barely passes his exams, and I’m genuinely afraid that if this continues, he might fail soon. Just switches on TV and eats aloo ka paratha all day.

We recently admitted him to one of our relatives who is a tuition teacher (she teaches 20+ students and her own daughter is a top student in 8th grade). We are a middle-class family, so hiring expensive tutors is not feasible for us. Plus, I’m worried that spoon-feeding him through tuition might make him even more dependent.

The strange part is – he isn’t dull at all. He loves coding and shows genuine interest in the things he likes. But when it comes to academics, he just doesn’t care.

I’ve tried explaining to my father that he needs some form of sports or physical activity to energize his mind, but my father disagrees, saying our locality doesn’t have kids to play with. At school, he also doesn’t play any sports. On top of that, he’s a bit too innocent (masoom) compared to his classmates, and often gets taken advantage of – even with small things like his pocket money.

For context – I’m pursuing my master’s thesis in another state, so I can’t be with him daily. I only come home once a month.

My questions:

Is home tuition the right choice at this stage, or is it going to spoil him more?

How do we build his interest and discipline in academics without spoon-feeding?

How can we get him into sports or some healthy activity, given our environment?

What steps can we take as a family so that he doesn’t lose confidence and direction at this age?

Any advice or shared experiences would mean a lot.

Thanks in advance.

When Christians & politicians mix US education suffers. Parents can sue owners of web sites, and be charged criminally for not age verifying visitors to web sites with sexual content. Law is so broad it includes classic, literature, women learning about their changing bodies. And the Bible?

If you've read about the sudden appearance of age verification across the internet in the UK and thought it would never happen in the U.S., take note: many politicians want the same or even more strict laws. As of July 1st, South Dakota and Wyoming enacted laws requiring any website that hosts any sexual content to implement age verification measures.

These laws would potentially capture a broad range of non-pornographic content, including classic literature and art, and expose a wide range of platforms, of all sizes, to civil or criminal liability for not using age verification on every user.

We need help!

Hello! I am an educator in South Carolina and I don’t know what to do anymore. In my school teachers don’t get lunch breaks they must eat lunch with their class and were recently told that they have to be mobile during the classes lunch and monitor, meaning we cannot eat. Teachers are required to go to PLC, and meetings every week which takes most planning periods away completely. We only have maybe two or one planning period a week because of this. Parents actively berate employees, students actively berate employees, and no support is offered from district. We have students threatening each others lives and the adults are powerless to do anything about it. We write them up and miraculously no punishment or consequence is administered, accept maybe 1-3 days of ISS, and the student shows back up in class exhibiting the exact same behavior. Accept this time the teacher gets spoken down to because the student is behind in school work now. We don’t even have working water fountains. I feel like my coworkers and myself are no longer being treated like people, we are being stripped of basic human rights. In our district if anyone puts in a complaint to HR our names are attached to it and then we get pushed out of the district all together for rocking the boat. Most teachers literally leave in tears and I don’t know what to do or who to talk to get our district investigated by higher authorities.

Outrage over Oklahoma's plans to test the political leanings of teacher applicants from New York and California

Oklahoma will soon require applicants from California and New York looking for teaching jobs to pass an exam to test their political leanings in a bid to prevent "radical leftist ideology" in schools. The assessment has 50 questions in total, with some of the questions asking applicants to write the first three words of the U.S. Constitution and answer why freedom of religion is "important to America's identity."

Best tips for classes with high numbers of ELLs

My high school is doing teaming for freshmen only this year. I am on team D - my class sizes are on the smaller side, but about half of the students in my classes are English Language Learners of varying proficiency levels.

I teach science, so my class involves a lot of hands-on and group work. So far I've been compiling English language proficiency testing scores for all my new students so I can differentiate appropriately. I'm also planning on doing heterogenous groups for labs, with defined student roles.

I do have a mentor teacher I've asked these questions - unfortunately, her advice amounts to being discriminatory towards any language learner students. She finds a way to complain about her non-English speaking students in most conversations I have with her, related to the subject or not! Why do my references need to be current or former supervisors?

It’s so awkward!! I resigned my last job. Before that one, I don’t even know them anymore. Can’t they just go down the list in my job history and call if that’s what they want? Also what if my current supervisor doesn’t know I’m planning to leave??? So weird

Beyond the Lesson Plan: How I’m making teaching more responsive (and less exhausting)

Hey r/education, I wanted to share a workflow shift that’s been a game-changer for how I approach lesson delivery and student interaction.

As educators, we meticulously plan our lessons, but the real magic happens in the classroom – the spontaneous questions, the unexpected insights, the moments where we need to adapt on the fly. I used to find myself struggling to capture these dynamic classroom moments in my notes, or feeling like I was losing valuable time trying to type out impromptu explanations or feedback. It felt like the administrative burden was taking away from my ability to be truly responsive to my students.

I tried various digital whiteboards and interactive tools, but the bottleneck was always the speed at which I could accurately capture the nuances of classroom discussions and translate them into actionable insights for future lessons or student feedback.

Then I started experimenting with voice dictation, not just for my lesson plans, but for real-time classroom reflections and student interactions. My initial attempts with generic voice-to-text software were frustrating; they struggled with student names, specific academic concepts, and the rapid-fire nature of classroom dialogue. I spent more time correcting errors than actually gaining efficiency.

Then I discovered WillowVoice. The difference was profound. It accurately transcribes student questions, my explanations, and even complex group discussions with impressive precision. This has allowed me to:

  • Capture Classroom Insights: During or immediately after a lesson, I can dictate observations about student engagement, common misconceptions, and effective teaching moments. This creates a rich, real-time log that’s invaluable for refining my pedagogy.
  • Provide Instant Feedback: I can quickly speak through feedback on student work, making it more detailed and personalized than written comments, and delivering it faster.
  • Document Student Progress: I can dictate notes on individual student progress, noting breakthroughs or areas needing more support, ensuring their records are always up-to-date.
  • Outline Future Lessons: When a spontaneous discussion sparks a new idea for a lesson, I can quickly dictate the concept, ensuring I don’t lose the inspiration.

The accuracy and speed of WillowVoice mean I can focus on being fully present with my students, fostering a dynamic learning environment, rather than worrying about note-taking. My reflections are more detailed, my feedback is more timely, and I’m able to adapt my teaching with greater ease.

This tool has not only boosted my productivity but also significantly improved the quality of my teaching and my ability to connect with students.

What are your go-to tools or strategies for making your teaching more responsive and less administratively burdensome? I’m always eager to learn from fellow educators!

advice needed: A levels or Foundation year

I just got my A level results a few days ago and honestly im so disappointed on how bad i did despite putting all my effort and work in it. i barely ever went out and even restricted phone use during the 4 months before exams. I ended up with grades way way lower than i expected. My mother wants me to redo my A levels but my father thinks im a useless failure and cant redo them cause id mess up again. Although my father did tell me to think about what i wanted to do.

I have three options,

  1. Redo A levels, which means id have to restudy everything (i dont mind doing it) however i studied like crazy last time and ended up with horrible grades so im scared that it'll happen again and then id just be a double disappointment to my parents.

  2. Enter a low ranked university in my country. I'd be able to get in however the education system in my country is absolutely horrible and i doubt my degree would be valid anywhere else. Plus they do not offer the degree i want so id end up with a degree i do not want. This is the pathway my father wants me to take since he doesnt believe i am good enough for anything else.

  3. Do a foundation year abroad. im currently looking at universities in the US, Ireland, Malaysia, as well as Australia that offer foundation year. My O levels grades are more than enough to apply for foundation year. My current top choice is the FY in U of melbourne.

Has anybody been in a similar situation? I want to gather advice and think deeply about what im gonna do in the future before i speak to my father. Any advice on how to prove to him that im able to do a foundation year would be appreciated!

The educator hack that makes learning more engaging (and grading less painful)

Hey r/education, I wanted to share a workflow improvement that’s been a game-changer for how I approach teaching and student engagement.

As educators, we’re constantly designing lessons, delivering content, and assessing student understanding. A huge part of our job is providing timely and constructive feedback, planning engaging activities, and communicating effectively with students and parents. I used to spend countless hours typing out detailed feedback, lesson plans, and emails, often feeling like the administrative burden was taking away from my ability to inspire and connect with my students.

I tried various learning management systems and interactive tools, but the bottleneck was always the speed at which I could provide detailed, personalized feedback or capture my thoughts for lesson planning.

Then I started experimenting with voice dictation for my teaching tasks. My initial attempts with generic voice-to-text software were frustrating; they struggled with specific academic terms, student names, and the nuanced language of educational feedback. I spent more time correcting errors than actually gaining efficiency.

Then I discovered WillowVoice. The difference was profound. It accurately transcribes academic terms, student responses, and even complex pedagogical concepts with impressive precision. This has allowed me to:

  • Provide Student Feedback: I can quickly dictate detailed feedback on assignments, making it more personalized and comprehensive than written comments, and delivering it faster.

  • Draft Lesson Plans: I can talk through my learning objectives, activities, and assessments, structuring my lesson plans logically and comprehensively in a fraction of the time.

  • Compose Parent Communications: I can quickly create personalized emails and messages, addressing specific concerns or providing updates, making my communications more timely and empathetic.

    • Document Classroom Observations: I can dictate notes on student participation, group dynamics, and individual learning needs, ensuring thorough and accurate record-keeping.

The accuracy and speed of WillowVoice mean I can focus on designing engaging learning experiences and fostering a positive classroom environment, rather than the mechanical act of typing. My feedback is more detailed, my planning is more efficient, and I’m able to manage a higher volume of administrative tasks with greater ease.

This tool has not only boosted my productivity but also significantly improved the quality of my teaching and my ability to connect with students.

What are your go-to tools or strategies for making learning more engaging and streamlining your teaching workflow? I’m always eager to learn from fellow educators!

Pass-through Funds: artificially inflate per student spending?

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/0013189X221133396

I have been wondering about how pass-through funds might affect a school district’s per-student spending numbers. This question has been asked before and it has been found to have affected per-student spending numbers in some places.

I wanted to share this with others who may not have thought much about it before and I am also wondering if other pass-through funding types might possibly artificially inflate spending numbers in schools too, potentially.

So in my kids’ school district, we use a bus transportation company. Prices went up considerably last year and we say a line item increase by millions of dollars. So I asked when that would be reinbursed and if it was already included in the budget. They said it basically came in through the state funding, not as a separate revenue line.

So this has led me to wonder if that might make it look like state revenue and district spending is higher than what it really is. Any school budget aficionados out there?

I included a link to a paper that discusses this in relation to charter schools.

The teacher hack that gives me back my evenings (and makes grading less painful)

Hey r/education, I wanted to share a workflow improvement that’s been a game-changer for managing the administrative load of teaching.

We all love teaching, but the paperwork can be overwhelming: lesson plans, grading, parent communications, IEP notes, and endless emails. I used to spend countless hours after school and on weekends typing out detailed feedback, planning lessons, and responding to inquiries. It felt like the administrative burden was eating into my personal time and leading to burnout.

I tried various grading rubrics and communication apps, but the bottleneck was always the speed at which I could provide detailed, personalized feedback or capture my thoughts for lesson planning.

Then I started experimenting with voice dictation for my teaching tasks. My initial attempts with generic voice-to-text software were frustrating; they struggled with specific academic terms, student names, and the nuanced language of educational feedback. I spent more time correcting errors than actually gaining efficiency.

  • Compose Parent Communications: I can quickly create personalized emails and messages, addressing specific concerns or providing updates, making my communications more timely and empathetic.

  • Document IEP/504 Notes: I can dictate detailed notes for individualized education plans or 504 accommodations, ensuring thorough and accurate record-keeping.

The accuracy and speed of WillowVoice mean I can focus on designing engaging learning experiences and connecting with my students, rather than the mechanical act of typing. My feedback is more detailed, my planning is more efficient, and I’m able to manage a higher volume of administrative tasks with greater ease.

This tool has not only boosted my productivity but also significantly improved the quality of my teaching and allowed me to reclaim my evenings and weekends.

OMG! This is what I just read in my daughter’s 6th grade social studies notes…

“The class system: some people have more money and [more] privileges. Other people have less money and [less] privileges. The class system is rigid. “Rigid” means nothing changes. No one changes economic class or social status. In a rigid class system, if you are born poor, you die poor. If you are born rich, die rich.”

This is literally what she wrote in her social studies notebook. They never sent a text book home and she always seemed to be able to do her homework by herself, but since she just started 7th grade I was going through her old notebook and came across this (see above). OMG! What do you people think about this?????

Hey, we have a little one in school now and we wanted to know if this was normal? Instead of like candy or cookies they just want people to write checks. If you don't pay enough you don't get to do certain things on certain days. I'll post the pic with the prices. My wife and I find it odd. It seems this would single poor kids out and cause bullying.

Since i can't add images.

Level 1 1$ get to do hat day Level 2 $10 get to have pajama day Level 3 $50 costume pass Level 4 $100 attend dance party Level 5 $150 get to eat with school pet. If you pay the 150 early you get to see a reptile show...

K-12 “School throughout the year”

Is there any benefit to having school throughout the year, replacing summer break with one week of school followed by one week of a break/practice time?

I am a substitute teacher in the U.S. and while I cannot entirely blame poor retention of learning material in my school district on the timing of education, I can’t help thinking that schooling for months on end followed by absolutely no schooling for two months does students any favors. In my experience, when I was learning French, the first few weeks was just reviewing everything learned (or forgotten) during the preceding school year.

Whiplash: The Dilemma of Methods and Limits in Education

Hello! I recently rewatched Whiplash and it’s left me grappling with profound questions about education limits. The film follows a young drummer, and his teacher who pushes him to the brink of collapse with brutal methods to unlock his potential. I’m obsessed with how this movie forces us to confront a dilemma: Should we demand the absolute most from those we care about to help them achieve greatness, even if it risks breaking them? Or is moderating that pressure, prioritizing their well-being, the truer act of love? The movie teacher argues his ruthless approach is a form of love, claiming it’s the only way to forge true genius. Yet, is this relentless drive to push someone past their limits compassionate, or is it just ego disguised as care? Can breaking someone down ever be justified as love, or is nurturing their growth with balance the more human approach? What do you all think? Have you encountered this tension in your own experience—whether in education, relationships, or personal goals? Is pushing someone to their breaking point ever an act of love, or is restraint the deeper expression of care? I’d love to hear your perspectives. (Spoilers welcome, but please flag them!) 🎥🥁

Grades are the laziest metric in education.

Hi all, I’m 25, building in edtech, and one thing that’s become clear fast: most institutions still measure “learning outcomes” almost entirely by grades.

It’s the simplest number to track, but also the most misleading. Grades are a snapshot, not a heartbeat. They tell you how a student performed once, not if they truly understood, stayed engaged, or can apply it a month later.

I’ve watched students ace an exam and forget 50% by the next week (I've been that student).
I’ve seen others become deeply engaged and improve, but their grades lag behind until the end of the term (I've also been that one).

If we care about actual learning, we need to start tracking comprehension and engagement in real time when there’s still a chance to fix things, not after it’s too late.

For those teaching or running programs:
If grades disappeared tomorrow, what’s the one signal you’d use to measure real learning?

Hello all. I'm currently halfway through my second year at UMGC with my bachelor's in Cybersecurity Technology and a minor in computer programming and one thing that keeps popping into my mind is does the university itself matter for a job? Adult Education NYC

Hi, I am looking for adult high school-like classes for a foreign student in her mid 20s in NYC. She doesn't need GED she just needs to pick up certain subjects she missed out on while in her homeland. Things like History, Geography, basic sciences like physics and social studies and some English literature. No need for math or computer stuff. I am looking for classes to help her get context in conversations and to catch up to some basic knowledge. Ex: Kangaroos come from Australia or that Mars is a red planet or that Shakespear wrote Hamlet. Something to help her acclimate to the west. Doesn't matter if paid and in person or online. Needs to be weekends or after 6pm. Basically, to help her gey used to western culture and English. Things we take for granted. I would mostly focus on history and literature. Ideas?

Free AI Writing Prompts for Film & Media Literacy (Grades 9–12)

Hello! I’m a middle and high school teacher who recently created a free 5-prompt sample pack to help students engage with film and media through structured, creative writing activities using tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude.

The prompts are:

  • Role-based and classroom-tested
  • Focused on media literacy, visual storytelling, and critical thinking
  • Adaptable for English, media studies, or creative writing classes

I made these to help students think more deeply about what they watch and how stories are told.

Going back to undergrad after receiving a BFA

Hi, I was hoping for some advice and personal stories that might help me decide the best course of action for my education and life.

After having a very rough time in high school, with mistreated mental illness and addiction, I rebelled against the academic system and put my whole heart into pursuing an art degree. I absolutely loved it and don't regret it for a second; I learned a ton about myself and grew as a person. I take my art very seriously and work on it every day, thinking about it constantly, and always changing and growing. I'm proud to have received my BFA. It took me a long time to get to this point, but it took even longer for me to realize I don't want to pursue a career in art. It's painful for me to sell my work, plus the idea of taking up a "day job" to support myself while I market my work just doesn't feel like me. I also keep finding myself in social circles that feel frivolous and selfish and I'm starting to feel trapped. I've looked into graduate programs in museum studies or art conservation, but I just feel like I don't really care about that; I never read about these subjects in my spare time. Over the past couple years, I've been floating the idea of returning to undergrad in a scientific field. I really want my career to contribute to the world differently than art: more directly, more overtly. Something to make me feel like I'm really helping lives. There's a university near me that has an accomplished Forensic Science program--something I've always been fascinated with--that I'm considering applying to.

In terms of direct questions, I was wondering other's experiences with getting a second undergraduate degree in a completely different field. I have perused many queries on here about the subject, but none specifically reference turning away from the very different world of art school. Many people have suggested getting an advanced degree and pushing oneself to take the intro classes as quick as possible, but since I studied art, I fear I would be vastly behind everyone else. Especially because it's been such a long time since I was in high school.

It's troubling, isn't it, the idea of spending money on college twice. I was also so determined to be one of the few artists who would "make it" while in school. It feels like I'm giving up in a way, to pivot like this. But I've somewhat set my mind on it (depending on if input says this is a terrible idea). It's also frustrating because I know my art is good. Really good. But it's not like having a fulfilling scientific career will eliminate all my spare time for art--will it? Who here considers themselves an artist despite having another career? In order to keep myself monetarily afloat, it seems I'll have to have a job in addition to my art anyway, and I'd prefer it be something I love rather than, say, making coffee or selling shoes.

Also, what exactly is the best process to reapply to undergrad? Obviously I would transfer my gen-ed requirements, but does that mean I apply as a transfer student? Should I start by auditing classes as a non-student and then roll into the degree? Will I need to retake the SAT and ACT as an adult? Who best should write letters of recommendation? It also slightly complicates matters that I have a court-sealed name change so everything in high school may not be able to be linked to my identity; however I think my high school records are so long ago (I graduated 6 years ago) they may not even mean anything.

I'd love to hear from anyone in the same boat as me, or who knows anyone who was! Or even just similar situations. And don't hesitate away from specificity, I'm very interested. Thanks!

Mastering the art of giving feedback in education: The SMART approach (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) can highly improve the feedback process. Your thoughts?

Common challenges in giving feedback include:

Discomfort with the conversation (addressing a peer, for example, may elicit imposter feelings or concerns about creating future tension)

Risk of miscommunications (such as unclear wording that confuses the recipient)

Poor timing (such as waiting too long to provide valuable feedback)

Other challenges can arise on the recipient's end, such as misinterpreting the messenger's tone, which often leads to defensiveness.

Despite these potential complications in the feedback loop, well-delivered feedback can improve a team's efficiency, productivity, and outcomes.

It's important to remember that feedback is a two-way process. While a recipient's response to your feedback is largely beyond your control, there are strategies you can use to mitigate the chances of a negative reaction.

More details are inside the link.

What do you say when a kid asks, Why do I have to learn math?

I have been asked this question by elementary schoolers and high schoolers, and I've never successfully answered it.

I've tried platitudes like so you can get good grades, so you can get into a good college, even though at the time I didn't believe them.

I've tried appealing to curiosity in an understandable way, and saying, because it is beautiful and interesting, it'll make you a better problem solver, even though that's incredibly vague. And I've tried giving the answer that I believe is true, that it's not about learning the math at all. It's about learning the structure of the world, so that your brain can know these templates and apply them to things you do care about, like writing or filmmaking or comedy or music.

That's the reason I learn math, so that I can be smarter at all the things I want to improve at. The issue, however, when I do give this full answer, is that in the kid's mind, there's always a disconnect. That idea, that you can internalize the structures and templates that you learn from math, is incredibly abstract, and frankly, unbelievable, to a kid who hasn't been exposed to so many examples of learning a pattern in one place and finding it somewhere else.

So what do you guys say when a kid asks this question? What is your success rate of converting an unmotivated child to practice their multiplication facts or to study for Algebra 2 into someone who is deeply curious about their learning?

What are the best services to pay someone to do my assignment?

To be honest, a lot of people quietly look for assignment help when they’re overwhelmed—tight deadlines, multiple subjects, or just burnout. If you're thinking of paying someone to do your assignment, it's really important to be careful about who you trust and how you use that support.

In my case, I’ve used external help a couple of times—not to get someone to write everything from scratch, but to get guidance when I was stuck or running out of time. One name that stood out was The Student Helpline. I used them once when I was dealing with back-to-back submissions. They helped me structure my ideas properly and clean up the formatting and references, which made a big difference.

That said, you still have to understand what’s submitted in your name. Using these services should be about getting unstuck, improving your writing, or learning how to approach a topic—not just handing off the entire task. It’s easy to cross a line without meaning to, so it’s best to use them as academic support rather than a full-on shortcut.

That moment when a student just… thanks you

A student of mine once stayed back after class just to say thank you. Said it was the first time someone asked their opinion seriously. It still sticks with me.

If so did anyone attend something like this?id love to hear about your experience and what school you went to ,im actually desperate and i want to finish school as soon as possible, i would be graduating in 2 years normally but im losing hope 🥲

Struggling to understand Functional Skills English Level 2 Reading — Can anyone explain?

Hi everyone, I’m doing Functional Skills English Level 2 and I’m struggling to understand the reading questions, especially when it asks about “purposes of the text.” I find it hard to know if a text is informing, explaining, or persuading, and how to tell the difference. I’m using examples like the cycling success text and the Eiffel Tower text, but it still isn’t sinking in properly.

Could anyone explain in simple terms how to spot what the purpose is, and maybe give a few tips on how to answer these questions in the test?

Thanks so much for any advice! 😊

Do you know where your educational dollars are going?

Have you heard of Stand For Children? It is a legislative action group that operates in I think 9 states.

Here in Oregon, they have written significant pieces of legislation that changes the way our educational dollars are used. However these pieces of legislation are not sold to the public in a direct way. The rallying cry may be, “Support Early Education,” for example, but in practice, the passed legislation does not fund public preschools, but rather it routes public dollars to in-home “daycares” that may have as few as 1-2 students while public preschools shut down. It basically reroutes dollars that would normally pay teachers in schools toward instead funding subsidizing daycares that may or may not even be legitimate, paving the way for fraud and waste. We are already seeing the fall back of some of these policies in our state: the Secretary of State just conducted an audit that found a daycare accepting money for 60+ students but only having 9 kids in their care. I believe more will be found too.

This legislative action group is doing what they can to expand these policies to other states too…so please pay attention because they take the things people want to support and then write the rules in ways that detract from public education. I would have voted for any of these legislation changes based on how they were explained, but it’s only been on further investigation that I realized how these policies are being applied: to route educational dollars away from school while simultaneously making it look like we are spending more on education than ever.

Schools are being closed, mass teacher layoffs are happening, even while the celebrations are going on about “early education” and “increased funding” for education.

I wish there was a way to help more people to become more aware before it starts to hit their states as well because many of these tactics are being used at the federal level too. Stand for children wrote the Studnet Success Act and there is a similar act at the federal level. When you look at the fine print, you can see that private schools, partnerships (public-private partnerships = public money to private institutions), religious schools, etc., are among the beneficiaries of any of the policies they seem to write or influence. And I think we just passed some legislation that means that whoever writes the legislation will get the opportunity to write the administrative rules too.

I know this is long but I hope more people will look into this. What this is is the privatization of public education and we are paying for it with our tax dollars and our children’s future. If you want to know more or know about more examples, lmk. Thanks!

If you had total control over how bullying is dealt with, what would you do?

If you didn’t have to worry about current laws, lawsuits, or district policies, how would you handle bullying in your ideal school? How would consequences work and what would you actually consider bullying vs. normal developmental behaviour (rumors, exclusion, teasing, etc.)?

Basically, how would you run it if you were fully in charge?

What are students using to cheat??

Hi Everyone, I'm an assistant marker for my university, and I'm noticing a lot of students that were previously getting rock bottom scores are now getting straight A's.

Whilst it is possible that one or two of these students actually decided to start taking university serious, I am sure most of them are cheating.

For reference, we use Respondus and TurnItIn.

My question to you all: Do you know of any tools/methods that students are using to cheat, and if there are any other more secure ways to monitor and prevent cheating?

Help a Teacher!

Here’s a great source where you can find a local classroom to support.

Full disclosure: I am a teacher with a list here, but I’m not posting my information because I’m more interested in getting donations to classrooms that need it than I am about getting things for my classroom specifically.

Give what you can! Even a $5 pack of dry erase markers make a difference!

Electrics

I am interested in cars and have two diplomas in Motor Vehicle, Systems and Maintenance and was wondering if Electrics are relevant and if an apprenticeship in this field could help me in anyway. I think it could open up more opportunities for me when I work in the Motor Vehicle Industry but I am not fully sure.

What do you all think of the new phone laws

For context I’m in private school in one of the states that’s banning phones, and the phone bans don’t apply because my school is a private institution with no federal funding. So I was curious to see what other people’s thoughts are that are in public schools on the phone bands

hs senior here, need urgent help

Hello, I’m a senior in high school and I’m planning on pursuing my studies abroad. I’ve studied my whole school years in Arabic. All subjects, maths, science, everything was taught in Arabic in my country. I would say I have pretty decent English because I’ve always been learning it myself aside from school. However, foreign universities teach all subjects in English, obviously. My question is, would such a change be manageable? How hard is it to suddenly switch from studying in all-Arabic to all-English? If anyone has any experience or is in a similar situation I would truly appreciate your help. Thanks for reading!

Private Catholic vs Public for kids.

This is kind of a vent post along with wanting opinions.

Our kids are starting 1st grade this year. There is both a private Roman Catholic school and a public school system for us to choose from, almost the same distance from our house. The public school is one of the better ones in the region, I’d say close to an 7-8 out of 10 across the board.

We are starting out in public to see how it goes.

Half the kids and the parents we’ve gotten to know in our neighborhood send their kids to private. One mom in particular RAVES about her kids going to private, the school is so much better at this and that, blah blah blah. She says the public schools mix in special Ed students, there are some poor kids there etc.

To the point she literally straight up to our faces says she feels sorry for our kids going to public and they’re not going to learn a lot and it’s a bad choice.

And it just so happens they’re one of the more social and actively outside families in the neighborhood and our kids are the same age.

This just really really upsets us. We can technically afford private just fine, but we’re not practicing Catholics and don’t feel private is exponentially way better given our options.

Technically speaking private might yield a slightly better education and there’s more structure and discipline, but then you have the religion classes, somewhat limited resources, and a very small pool of kids.

Idk, we’re not really regretting our decision so far, it just rubbed us the wrong way.

Thoughts?

Attending university as an adult

Only to merely allow you the understanding why I didn’t attend university, I’ll be brief and won’t take up too much of your time. Throughout high school I was psychologically abused quite badly by my ex-stepfather so I couldn’t focus on what I needed to in order to succeed, therefore I stopped attending as a junior and officially quit. I just needed you to know that so you understand where I’m coming from. Now, would it be possible to attend a reputable university with a GED? I want to eventually have a career I enjoy. That’s all folks. I would very much appreciate some constructive advice and wisdom from those more experienced with this. Thank you for your time and attention, have a blessed day.
