Is the Philosophy of Grades Hurting Education?

Every year the concept of how grades are broken comes up in meetings, in policy discussion, in my own classroom. I see how frequently we get to the summer and the posts here lament how parents, students and administrators reach out to try and force artificially high grades. I came across this podcast about how grades are killing education and it’s just left me devastated because of how accurate it’s description of what I’ve felt bubbling in the background. Is anyone in a school that's done something radical with their grading philosophy?
