Historically, what has made some universities more prestigious than others? I know a lot of it is how old the university is, but in a lot of cases it’s not so clear-cut. Oxford and Cambridge are older than Harvard, but Harvard is considered to be more prestigious. Also, different universities have different specialities - Wharton and Harvard Business School are good at business, Yale is good at law, Harvard is good at medicine, etc. In my country of Canada, it’s the same - Western and Queens University is good at business, McMaster is good for undergraduate health sciences, UofT is really only good for masters programs (with a few exceptions), etc.
So what has made some universities more prestigious than others, besides being older? What has made some universities seem good at specific subject areas?
