I apologize for the length of this simple question, but I wanted to give some background. My son is currently in kindergarten in a public school. From the age of 2 through pre-school, we had him in a daycare that was very well renowned. It had a solid curriculum and taught the kids excellent social and emotional skills. We were slightly concerned about the elementary school he would be attending for kindergarten. The pros of the school are that the building is only a year old and designed for a fun and functional elementary school. The staff and teachers are all terrific. We think the problem is the area of the school. We are right on the border for this district. Although we are in a very modest house and are middle of the road middle class, the majority of the school is lower class. The teachers have their hands full. Our son has been coming home upset almost every day. When we ask him about his day, we hear, "It wasn't a good day. My friends weren't making good choices, and we had to sit with our heads down until everyone listened. I didn't get to learn anything today." We know most of these kids didn't get the structured daycare that our son received, and going from nothing to a structured kindergarten can be a lot for a young kid. Second, we noticed a considerable lack of parental involvement. Any parent-teacher meetings, or open houses, we were only 1 of maybe five or six parents that would show up for a class of 24. We have two options as we see them. One, move to another school district and take on a probably much larger mortgage to get to a better district or enroll in a catholic school down the street from our current house. We toured it yesterday and liked what we saw. Our concern is the religious side of it. My wife and I were both raised as Christian, and though we don't currently attend church, we live our lives as Christians. We say grace with our son before dinner and have tried to talk to him about GOD and Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas. I'm very open about all religions, but I don't know what to expect from sending him to a catholic school. Any thoughts would be helpful. If you are in the same situation as we are and have sent your child to a catholic school and were not catholic, I would love to hear your experience.
