Teachers emailing 10 year olds instead of parents

My child is at a private school where they made 5th grade middle school. I discovered that some teachers were emailing the students directly rather than the parent. One student was emailed that she failed a test and could retake it the next day. But these are 10 year olds and newly minted 11 year olds that don’t know to check their email. I am trepidatious about adults emailing my child without my knowledge. At this grade, fifth grade, shouldn’t email correspondence go to the parents? I would think emailing children privately without the parents knowledge could pose potential issues.
