How do you figure out if you need structure or if you're better off figuring things out on your own?

When you're trying to learn something new, like a new skill or career, one of the hardest things is deciding how to approach it. Some people go straight back to school, others spend months DIY-ing with YouTube and free courses.

But how do you actually know which works best for you?
