Why do my students treat male teachers with more respect, even if they yell less?

I’m a female teacher. I’m strict, consistent, and firm. Still, some of my students seem to automatically respect the male PE teacher, who’s friendly and barely raises his voice.
It’s subtle, but noticeable.
Anyone else experienced this? Is it age-related? Gender bias? I’m trying not to take it personally, but it's hard.
