It’s clear that the way schools operate needs real reform. Students are constantly facing heavy control and reduced autonomy, with little to no support

School has shifted into a place of control, restriction and deprival of autonomy, while harsh academic pressure keeps building. The power imbalance between staff and students is so stark that discipline often replaces genuine interaction. Students are expected to show constant obedience, with rules like no talking back to teachers, always listening without question, strict uniform requirements, limits on self expression and heavy digital restrictions.

Students never get to have a say in the policies that shape their daily lives, even when those rules directly affect their wellbeing. Instead of being environments that support growth and individuality, schools often prioritise compliance over connection, leaving students feeling unheard and over managed.

There is also a huge imbalance in fairness between students and staff, where the rules are completely one sided. Staff can have long nails, wear nail polish, choose shoes that aren’t enclosed and even eat in class, while students are punished for the same things. Teachers can wear makeup or choose skirts and shorts in their chosen length, but students are restricted and disciplined for expressing themselves in the same ways.

Staff are allowed to keep their phones with them and even use them during class, yet students face strict bans and consequences for doing so. These double standards make the inequality between students and teachers even more obvious, and leave students feeling controlled instead of respected.

Students are also rarely spoken to in a friendly or respectful manner by staff. When a student tries to express a concern or share how they feel, it is almost always brushed off or dismissed. Their worries, emotions and experiences are treated as unimportant, while adults expect full compliance without offering the same level of understanding or care in return. This constant dismissal adds to the power imbalance, making students feel small and unheard in a place that is supposed to support them.

Detentions, suspensions and other disciplinary actions do not help a student understand the consequences of their behaviour in any meaningful way. Discipline should never be used unfairly or without listening to the student's side first. If a student expresses feelings of unfairness, disrespect or mistreatment, they deserve to be heard without the threat of punishment. Disciplinary action should only be considered when something is genuinely serious, and even then it needs to be paired with wellbeing check ins, guidance and a gentle approach that supports the student instead of scaring them.

In general, schools need to shift away from control and compliance, and move towards respect, collaboration and genuine care. Students deserve to be heard, included and treated as human beings whose voices matter. When schools prioritise wellbeing, fairness and authentic connection, they become places where students can grow with confidence instead of fear. Real change begins when we recognise these issues and choose to build an environment that values people over power.

America vs the world

Anybody wiser on the subject, how does US education compare to the rest of the world? Is it the way people portray it? What is the reason for your opinion?

Help from educators- alternative options for 11th grade student

Admins, please delete if not allowed.

My 11th grade student loves to learn. I was on the verge of transferring her to a private school focused on 1:1 teacher/student ratios to accelerate her executive functioning skills due to severe ADHD and Tourette’s Syndrome when I was diagnosed with my second, very rare, primary cancer. Both of my cancers have been discovered in 2025: one in June and the second in October. I am her only parent. I do not know what treatment entails yet; I’m being evaluated in Rochester in January. I add this for context to support the need for a traditional or private in-person school alternative.

I want to stress that we do have other family support, but we are very close and although she will not need to “take care” of me, she does wish to be near me, and her therapist and I agree this is in her best interest. As such, I’m seeking flexible online or homeschool options that will allow her to finish high school with some flexibility as we may be in Washington County, where we live, or Rochester, as my treatment plans and locations have not been determined and may vary.

This is also complicated and important, obviously. Because of how much I’m juggling right now, I’m asking for help from this community - I need guidance to make a good decision for my very important child so she has stability, her education is prioritized, and I can also use my limited energy to be a present parent. Any help anyone can provide will be extremely appreciated

SEND funding UK

"The Treasury has made clear that the [SEND] costs will be absorbed by the overall government budget. Funding will be determined at the next Spending Review, which will take place in 2027" At first thought transferring the responsibilites for SEND funding to central government may appear attractive but my initial reaction is that it cuts across the principle of local accountability, would be adminitratively unwieldy and ultimately could become a rod for the sitting government's own back. Change is needed but if more central systems are judged as potentially better i could take some convincing.

From Technical to Social

Hi, I(18M) have just dropped my engineering course. I started out in education as a technical kinda person enjoying maths and computers. Recently I've been way more into human and social sciences, has anyone else has this transition cause I really feel like I'm on my own here.

5 Things to Know About Curriculum in the United States

There's been a whole lot of discussion of late about curriculum - the what of teaching. Whose to blame for reading curriculum decisions, theories about what's taught in history class, etc. I thought it might be helpful to do provide some general context about curriculum in the United States. (I'm happy to provide sources and/or texts for more and I did not use ChatGPT or AI in any way when writing this post.)

  1. Schools in the United States follow what is known as the modern liberal arts curriculum. Students from Kindergarten to 12th grade are expected to study reading and writing (English), math, science, history (social studies), art, music, physical education, and electives. Think of these as the boulders that make up American public education and it came about slowly over the 19th century and settled into place at the turn of the 20th century for a whole lot of reasons. A 5th grade teacher deciding to teach, for example, Spanish grammar instead of English grammar would face a whole lot of pushback for a whole lot of reasons.
  2. There is no national education system. Instead, there are 50+ systems all operating within the United States (and abroad.) Each state has its own system. Each territory (American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands) has its own system. The Department of Defense has it's own system. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has its own system. Etc. While there are similarities (i.e. the boulders), there are some pretty profound differences. There are even some fairly meaningful differences between neighboring states. The similarities are, generally speaking, related to #1.
  3. The degree to which teachers in a state have a say in curriculum-decision making depends on when their state joined the Union. It's not an exact correlation, but generally speaking, states that seceded from the United States and then re-joined have a strong state-level hand in curriculum decisions. 19 states are "textbook-adoption states" - the state generates lists schools pick from. The other states are leave it up to school districts ("local control.") In some cases, the state is actually prohibited from telling school districts which curriculum to adopt or interfering with district-level curriculum committees. There's a lot tied up here around standards, NCLB/ESSA, but suffice to say, Texas' curriculum adoption approach is not Massachusetts'.
  4. Teachers are overwhelmingly women. As public education became an essential part of American childhood in the later half of the 18th century, there were lots of ideas on how to make it work for as many* children as possible. The people most likely to be a position to suggest and act on those ideas were men**. Known as schoolmen, a professional class emerged in the early 20th century to do the work of thinking about how to school. Despite the efforts of many, teachers' were locked into the responsibility of teaching; Schoolmen took over administration, including curriculum. Superintendents' cabinets - people with titles like Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Assessment - are remnants of the partitioning of what to teach pedagogy from what to teach (how to teach.)
  5. There is no consensus on what constitutes "high-quality" curriculum. While there have been multiple attempts to define what makes a curriculum "good," there's no one set definition or criteria. The What Works Clearinghouse out of the Department of Education is/was as close as the country has gotten to resolving the matter, recent federal-level decisions have stopped much of that work.

My goal in posting this is to provide a bit more context around how curriculum works in the US.

* White non-disabled children.
** Mostly white.

"Diversification" still does not justify how much useless information we are forced to remember in school.

I have always struggled to articulate exactly why I believe that even information about "useful subjects", is often useless, but I think I have finally done it. Would appreciate your input. Main point is as mentioned in the title, education is horribly inefficient, we are taught so much that we do not require.

To start, let us take an analogy. We have an enemy with 5000 units of health. The only attack your character has, is a single hit that currently deals 2500 units of damage. You can perform this attack once per second.

Alright, so an optimal clear would be 2 seconds. Now lets say that you got an item that gives an attack buff. You now deal 50% more damage per hit. Now given that the relationship between clear time and DPS is linear, one would assume this directly translates to a 50% faster clear time, right? But it doesnt, because you still need two hits to kill the enemy [3750 + 3750], therefore rendering your effective DPS unchanged.

For the damage increase to result in a change in clear time, it would need to be high enough to change THE NUMBER OF ACTIONS NEEDED TO ACCOMPLISH THE TASK. In this case, the next BREAK POINT would be at 5000 damage per hit.

This concept is, I believe, at least partly why a lot of people overuse the defense of "diversification", when debating the necessity of different classes. More information on a subject does not necessarily mean you can handle situations pertaining the subject better.

Let me take a three subjects, that I think are somewhat overrated. Sex education, Calculus and Physics.

Granted, the exact curriculum will vary, but I was taught a LOT about sex and reproduction that I found useless.

  1. Detailed cross sectional diagrams of reproductive organs.....why....sure knowing the external parts, their purposes and how to care for them is useful, but this is overkill.

  2. Miscellaneous : How is remembering the exact chemicals that serve as the solvent for semen, or the system of ducts and glands gonna help me? C'mon.

  3. The exact hormones and processes behind periods. DEAR MOM, while i sympathise with how terrible most men are regarding periods, YA WENT OVERBOARD. On one hand, yes it helps with dealing with my little sis and friends too [ its a bit depressing how impressed they are with me ] , but only a tiny subset of the crap she taught was useful. I also generally see people saying, under somewhat in depth (relative to what you need to manage them) videos, saying it should be necessary learning.

Again, as long as you remember the timeline with corresponding discharge, symptom managers/relievers (snacks, hot water bag, pads, tampons, cups, also masturbatiom helps with the pain apparently tho thats hard to bring up), to not dismiss excruciating abdomimal pain as period cramps, knowing you can have a late period due to reasons other than pregnancy [ weight gain, stress, exercise, sleep deprivation ], how to get the stains out [hydrogen peroxide helps a lot], YOU DONT NEED PARAGRAPHS ON HOW EXACTLY IT WORKS.

You can apply this to health in general, we learnt so much extra that is unnecessary.

Calc and Phy too

  1. Calc is useless for daily use and most non-engineering and non-physics aligned jobs (software engineering is an exception i think), even if in theory it is present in everything.

  2. Knowing roughly how forces interact helps us understand crumple zones in cars, how to drive properly, how to handle heavy weights, safely interact with electronics. On the other hand, remembering the formulas for gravity, oscillators, maximum power transfer (RLC circuits), Double refraction etc is a waste.

Unless you can reach a break point with a certain amount of information, you wont see any benefit.

Another point i would like to address is the "learning how to learn".

A lot of the information students need to learn is USELESS, even if the logic they use to derive conclusions from them can be applied elsewhere. I know one should be wary of simple solutions to detrimental problems, but JUST MAKE THOSE SUBJECTS AN OPEN BOOK COURSE??? NO??? IDK. That type of course would focus on criticial thinking, and relieives time that would otherwise be spent memorizing axioms they will never need (A lot of the facts in question here, are not TRUE axioms in the scientific and mathematical sense, but their derivations are often far too advanced to teach, making them effectively axioms in that context).

To conclude: even if the subject is theoretically useful, it does not mean you are enriching yourself when you try engrave facts from its domain, into your brain.

NOTE:

I know, its a pretty overdone topic, but I'm hoping these arguments are rarely spoken enough to justify a post.

Formal Education is sometimes an exhausting topic, because the system is good enough that its worth participating in, but bad enough that you constantly question how we have have stuck with this archaic system for so long. This results in debates regarding it being susceptible, I assume, simultaneously to over-critique and undervalue it out of frustration; yet also overvalue it out of fear that people will abandon this powerful tool.

SES or normal High School?

Hey guys. I am kinda scared. For context, I have a 3.693 is my GPA currently. (I know, it’s bad, but I do have AD-HD, OCD, Neurodivergence, Depression, Dyslexia, anxiety and I got and kept a job since 14.) First year of HS it was a 3.7 with on level classes. (Math was my biggest struggle, BUT I love math, I just suck.) and after this latest year of HS I have the 3.693GPA. That is with APUSH, HAL, Hon Bio. And on level math (I got my first C+ :( which was my worst grade ever in HS) so anyway, I’m considering going to SES, but I love learning and history and writing, and learning calculus and a bunch of other math/science stuff on my own, but I also love art! And so I’m confused and concerned that if I go to SES then my dream colleges JHU and Oxford, won’t want me. Any help is appreciated! Also I am aware that my grades aren’t great but I’m hoping that colleges can overlook it given my experiences.

Why should safety education be introduced early, just like life skills?

Because safety is a fundamental part of everyday living. From school labs to playgrounds to daily routines, students face risks everywhere. Teaching them how to identify risks, respond to emergencies, and make safe decisions builds habits that protect them throughout life. Early awareness helps prevent accidents at home, in school, and later in workplaces. It shapes responsible, confident individuals who know how to react in critical situations.

Online Masters programs for Adolescent Psych?

Does anyone have any recommendations for online programs regarding Adolescent Development/Psychology? I got my BS in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. I currently work with and want to continue working with CJ system involved adolescents and kids with behavioral/mental health challenges. I looked at Capella University but I’m not sure how legit it is.

Any suggestions help! Even if it’s not exactly that degree, I’ll take any recommendations!

Trying To Learn But Everything Feels Hard

Lately I’m trying to improve my education a bit, like reading more and studying some things, but wow… it’s not easy I start reading and after a little bit my brain just goes “nah, we done here” and I forget what I just read.

I see people saying “learning is fun,” but for me it feels like climbing a mountain with flip-flops lol. I really wanna get better though, maybe understand things faster and not feel confused all the time.

i am a romanian student, who has been studying at university x majoring in economics for almost 2 months. since the first day of school i have realised how poor is the educational system in this country is.

  1. the theoretical material taught in classes would not help me at all
  2. we’re learning from outdated power points
  3. i know for a reason that i can gain actual experience if i get some practical assignments

Portugal’s special education system is on the brink - 500 vulnerable children may lose their schools after nearly 20 years of frozen funding

There is a deeply concerning situation unfolding in Portugal involving the country’s special education system.  I am sharing urgent and verified information about the imminent collapse of special education provision in Portugal

Five specialised schools, operating under State cooperation contracts, currently serve around 500 children with some of the most severe and complex needs in Portugal, children who require continuous supervision, multidisciplinary teams, structured environments and adapted facilities that mainstream public schools cannot provide.

For nearly two decades, the funding model for these schools remained essentially unchanged. Between 2008 and 2022, no adjustments were made to reflect rising operational costs, increased staff requirements, or the real needs of the children they support. In 2022, after one school faced imminent closure, the Government approved a small emergency update but clearly stated that a full revision of the funding model would follow the next year. That revision never materialised. According to the schools, the accumulation of financial pressure from almost 20 years of static funding has pushed them to the edge of insolvency.

For the past 18 months, the institutions have repeatedly submitted formal requests for clarification and urgent meetings with the Ministry of Education. They have sent financial reports, cost-per-student studies and written warnings that they may no longer be able to operate. According to these schools, none of those requests have received a response from the Minister of Education or the Secretaries of State. They report total silence, with no clarification, no meeting, and no plan communicated for the future.

Public concern intensified after an announcement in October 2025 in which the Minister of Education publicly referenced a €2.9 million reinforcement for special education. The announcement was reported in national media as if it were additional funding for these specialised schools. However, DGEstE, the State agency responsible for these contracts, later clarified directly to the institutions that this reinforcement was not directed to the contracted special education schools. Instead, it was a replenishment of DGEstE’s general budget for this student placements across various types of institutions, including public private schools, NGOs and cooperatives. The schools state that they did not receive any additional funding and that the number of authorised students also did not change. This discrepancy between what was publicly announced and what was actually implemented has caused widespread confusion and anxiety among families.

The consequences of inaction could be severe. These children require specialised environments that do not exist elsewhere in the public system. Families report living with profound uncertainty and fear, saying they have no idea where their children would go if the schools were forced to close. Some parents have had to leave their jobs because their children were unable to cope in mainstream schools. Now, they fear losing the only safe, stable and appropriate environment available to them, with no publicly identified alternative.

If these five specialised schools become unable to continue operating, where will these children go?

  2. Some med schools suggestions that are good but also on the affordable side(including tuition and living expenses) in europe and asia?

  3. If I go to a foreign country for med school without knowing the native language will I have trouble practicing? like clinical shifts?

  4. Do I need to give any entrance medical exams like UCAT, etc?

In schools and certain buildings with the no scent policy is body odour included?

I have a few students who do tend to have a strong body odour smell. I teach college and have not had much experience in teaching international students but this year I have a few. Unfortunately it is an awkward and uncomfortable topic and they have been talked to about it but it never seems to get better. They have been provided with hygiene products, all students are at the start of the year and they got extras recently. I’ve had some other students have to leave class due to the smell. One of my students mentioned that as a no scent policy is in place at the school it should include bad smells too. I’m just wondering how others have handled situations like this.

When is FAPE violated

  1. My selectively mute child is in an ICT classroom but continues to withhold her urine and doesn’t eat. She was denied a tolieting paraprofessional, speech, IEP goals do not mention strategies to implement nonverbal gestures and cues. She doesn’t talk to adults or her peers. She cannot self advocate for herself. Show and tell was a DISASTER. She is behind on reading.

  2. My dyslexic third grader is still at a second grade reading level. Also in an ICT classroom. They denied SETTS on top of ICT but on her MAP Assesment she scored 30% in reading and 35% in math. All grades well below standards and goals. She has fallen through the cracks and it’s starting to affect her emotionally. She hides her report cards. Says she’s stupid. Not good at anything. Doesn’t want to go to school. Homework avoidance. This is with a private reading teacher that’s working on PAF with her. She can’t short term memorize anything to save her life. Denied OT but my IEE states she’s z6% for motor coordination. She has auditory sensory issues. She cannot grip a pen well. Please help.

I want my kids out.

Why Johnny Can’t Read: Not Enough Phonics (video in comments)

Reading scores have been bad for thirty years.

Why? Because teachers stopped pushing phonics and replaced it with something called “Balanced Literacy.”

It's meant to help kids fall in love with books. They use pictures to guess words, but may never learn to read.

-------------------------------

App designer Niels Hoven created Mentava to teach kids using phonics.

Now, most states have passed “Science of Reading” laws, pushing phonics.

Literacy Professor Andrew Johnson pushes back, saying teachers have always taught phonics. “Based on the needs of the kid, you design instruction.”

“[Politicians] jingle the keys and say, look over here! It must be those bad teachers, while ignoring the social things like poverty.”

We debate.

Thoughts on some of the Montessori Education System/Methods as an alternative to the traditional way?

Just as a thought experiment how would you view these methods as an alternative to the traditional education system? It would mean a overhaul of the existing system but it teaches students to learn how to teach themselves independently.

Here are the core principles of the Montessori approach, in simple terms:

1. students learn best by doing.

Montessori classrooms are hands-on. Instead of worksheets, students use real materials they can touch, move, and explore.

2. Follow the student.

Teachers watch what each student is drawn to and help them build on that interest instead of forcing everyone through the same lesson at the same time.

3. Freedom within limits.

student get choices, but the choices are set up so they stay focused and respectful. It’s not chaos, just guided independence.

4. Mixed-age classrooms.

You’ll usually see a three-year age range in one room. Older students help younger ones, and younger students learn by watching.

5. Self-paced learning.

students move at their own speed. If they’re ahead, they keep going. If they need more time, they can take it without pressure.

6. Respect for the student.

The whole system treats students as capable people. They’re trusted to take care of materials, solve small problems, and build independence.

7. Prepared environment.

Everything in the room is set up so students can reach it, use it, and put it back. The space itself teaches order and responsibility.

Shoukd I go for a justice degree or criminology degree?

They both seem interesting. I want to be a detective, but I also think that criminology is interesting as you have to analyse crime patterns and nullifying the criminals through the legal system. But I’m not sure what to choose. they both seem interesting and both can be used to get into a detective (although I think justice is better)

any advice?

Worst day I think I have ever had in my career

Honestly where do I start. Out of all my time in education and working off my notice period to work in a different industry I have possibly hit my lowest I could reach.

Today what started off with a lunch time duty turned into chaos where I was nearly knocked out by a swinning door that a student just forceably swung open nearly taking it off its hinges where it snapped back. I then had students throw abuse at me while I was helping with other staff control the situation, The doors being hit against my ankle and wrecking my shoes when we controlled the area around the problem by students. To top it all off being called a bully.

At this point I think I am just going to request garden leave because I have had enough now and I have worked 8 weeks on notice and said I would be here until christmas break but now I want to negotiate out of it.

Stop Blaming the Kids for Using AI for Assignments. Instead, Blame Me. Yourself, and Blame the Gradebook.

I had very little sympathy for students who used AI to complete assignments. Then I started researching the surveillance state we've built in our public schools.

My plan was to create a series of graphics to show a narrative of how schools "gave away the milk and the cow" by allowing companies like Google and ClassDojo to track every keystroke, every assignment, every grade, and the behavior of millions of students.

But the research became real last week. My freshman son missed one day of school. When I checked the portal, I saw a 46% in Algebra and a 38% in English.

My stomach dropped. But just for a half-second because I remembered:

  • The marking period was two weeks old.
  • He missed three assignments while sick.
  • The portal gave me zero feedback when I asked it about my son's effort in his classes.

Instead, I chilled out, forgot about the % and emailed his Math and English teachers. The didn't have any concerns, so neither do I.

So what does accessing my son's current grades on the school portal have to do with my slide to being somewhat sympathetic to students who use AI to complete school work?

Check out The Digital Panopticon: When EdTech Became Surveillance Tools to find out why WE hold a large portion of the blame.

Share your thoughts and let's dig into it.

Has anyone here ever done Challenge Day at their school?

I’m the student council president at my high school (Canada) and I’m trying to bring the official program here. I think my school really needs something like this as it seems like a meaningful way to improve school culture.

Was the program worth it? How did students and staff react? Any tips about funding, booking, or organizing it? Any stories or advice would be really appreciated!

How can we actually help students who are bright but chronically unmotivated?

We've all had them—students with clear potential who just don't seem to care. They're not struggling to understand the material; they're struggling to see the point.

Standard rewards and punishments often don't work. Piling on extra help can feel like nagging.

I'm looking for strategies that go beyond "make it more fun." Have you successfully reached a disengaged student? What sparked that shift—was it a specific project, a conversation, a connection to a real-world goal?

Kids need phonics to learn to read, but also, access to whole books — not just passages! — of great children’s literature, say experts including author and neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf, education journalist Natalie Wexler and ‘Sold A Story’ podcast host Emily Hanford. This Houston Chronicle column explains why.

Using coloring sheets in 3rd grade science body

First off I’m a parent and not a teacher. I went to my 3rd grader’s parent/teacher conference last week and was a bit surprised by something the teacher mentioned. Their current unit is on ecosystems and part of the assignment involves students creating a visual representation of a habitat. The teacher said students could either draw it themselves, make a diorama, or use a pre-made coloring sheet of a habitat and label the parts. Contrary to what I thought, this wasn’t an accommodation, this was offered to everyone as an alternative to doing the full drawing from scratch. I must have given a look when she said that, because she quickly added that it was meant to let students focus on learning the concepts rather than spending hours struggling with the art side. I understand the intention but it made me wonder: are we at risk of leaning too heavily on shortcuts like coloring sheets? I get that some kids may benefit from it and I’ve even seen some of these sheets online, some clearly sourced through mass printables from places like alibaba, so they’re accessible for the classroom. Still, shouldn’t part of the learning process involve building both understanding and effort? I’m curious if anyone else’s school uses coloring sheets this way in science or other subjects. Are students actually learning more or just getting a visually neat page to turn in?

Why do we use NAEP test scores to judge educational performance?

I noticed a few things in regards to NAEP testing reporting and it’s influence on policy making:

  1. Testing is done with a random sampling of students at a random sampling of schools, weighted for a variety of metrics.
  2. The schools that are chosen are not published and very well might include virtual charter schools that have very little oversight.
  3. There is not a lot of public input into the weighting process for chooses which schools are chosen for testing.

Thoughts?

In search of educators and administrators to interview

Listed as EdTech - but also Research:

I am doing market research for an AI tool I’ve built for education and wanted to connect with a few instructors and administrators, I’ve connected with heads of curriculums at other EdTech companies and administrators at schools in VA, they’ve all backed the product as a much needed easy solve to a huge problem that no one at this time has been able to address fully (AI written papers and essays and proving conceptual understanding in the world of AI)

Im looking now to outside of VA to understand our TAM (total addressable market) and how our tool would make a positive impact in your state.

The software is AI native and built in alignment to the new California AI law, FERPA, COPPA, EdLaw 2D and UDL native as well. It’s enterprise grade AI security and has no PII and password less + voice authentication as a password + SSO with Clever. The Tool is also aligned with and can be flexible between synchronous and a synchronous learning & standardized vs individualized education plans.

Willing to buy you a coffee or donate $10 to your favorite non-profit for your time.

Would love to speak with tech admins and teachers in the social sciences as well as any subject where papers are a heavy part of conceptual understanding.

Is a Degree in International Business Actually Worth It Today?

Hey everyone,

I’m considering doing a top-up degree in International Business, but I keep hearing mixed opinions about whether it’s actually valuable in the job market.

For anyone who has studied it or works in business/finance/management I’d love to know:

  • Is the degree respected by employers?
  • Does it lead to good career paths (finance, consulting, operations, management, etc.)?
  • Is it more theoretical, or does it teach real, practical skills?
  • If you could go back, would you still choose International Business?
  • Are there certain industries where it’s more useful or less useful?

For context, I’m currently doing ACCA, and I’m trying to figure out whether International Business is a smart complementary degree or just another generic qualification.

All honest opinions positive or negative are welcome.

Thanks! 🙏

How to build confidence despite Everyday Mathematics?

My child is in first grade and the school uses Everyday Mathematics.

Due to that curriculum’s spiral nature (or what I would call chaotically jumping around), my child is rapidly losing confidence because she does not have the fluency that she would have gotten if she was working with some kind of more foundation building curriculum.

So the question is: how do I manage to basically get her to ignore all of the things that are confusing her in school so that she can just focus on the foundational stuff with me at night ?

Like isn’t her teacher going to give her bad grades for not handing in the homework and for not following the advanced stuff in class?

But I really don’t care if she can skip count by -4. I want my kid to finish first grade knowing how to add and subtract one number at a time.

Toxic Environment of my school/pu college

My school is shit, I really hate my school I am currently studying in 12th grade(PCM,Cs) I was advised by one of my friends to join this PU college and I regret it. They literally make your life hell especially in 12th grade Being honest I really did not enjoy Science much I always wanted to become something that's uncommon like a YouTuber or a Gamer something like that but you know how Indian/asian parents are they want you to get a degree in a field to secure your future in their eyes. So comming back to the story about my school I am experienceing toxic environment here. I am being forced to do things and and if I don't my parents are called upto the college like as if I am a kindergarten kid and also that they humiliate you and your parents they also scammed me for taking the admission by saying they have the best facilities like a volleyball ground, good food, transport, etc. They had none Ants/hair/plastic found in food Unhygienic preparation Expensive bus fees No room for sports even though they are changing for it in the bill Expensive fees in terms of our location I know that it's a integrated IIT/NEET/CET based college but still calling out parents for being absent to the classes, calling eachother day seems mentally harrassing I also no good friends in this college Computer Science teacher ruined my image in the college just for being a curious learner and being a bit clumsy calling me impatient Teachers hate me now Principal is bossy Who opted for optional Biology were scammed saying that you can change your subject after taking admission. And also the fact that they won't let you leave after the 11th grade to join a different PU college they make you pay a fine of 40000/- Inr rupees for nothing just to leave the college No phones allowed if you bring phones they won't give back Breaking of cellphones was done before by the principal No proper break times Only an hr break including lunch (10/10/30 mins of breaktime) To expensive for a middle-class person who is willing to learn from a reputed college but ends up getting scammed. Timings are from 7:50am-5:30pm and there is no way of leaving the classes you have to sit I hope no one experiences such shitty as college.

What does research say about how healthcare professionals learn as they advance in their careers?

Hi everyone, I’m a learning designer at a nonprofit that creates, among other things, online education for HCPs. I'm curious about the current research on the learning behaviour of healthcare professionals throughout their career progression.

For example: Do early-career medical professionals engage in different learning activities compared to those in mid or late career stages? Are there noticeable differences in preferred modalities (e.g., online courses, conferences, peer learning) or types of events? How do factors like time constraints, experience, and professional goals influence these choices? Does age play a part in learning preferences?

If you’ve come across studies, articles, or even personal observations on this topic, please share!

Philippine Filipino, Araling Panlipunan, and Mother Tongue subject

Just an inquisitive side of mine. I hope you guys can help me clear up my confusion:

Given that "Filipino" is constitutionally mandated to be an evolving language inclusive of contributions from all Philippine languages, why does its practical implementation in the classroom remain so firmly rooted in the grammar and lexicon of Tagalog, thereby reinforcing its hegemony over other regional languages?

While the MTB-MLE policy is laudable for using the child's first language as a pedagogical tool in early grades, does its implementation inadvertently create a hierarchy where non-Tagalog speakers must learn two new languages (Filipino and English) in school, while Tagalog speakers have their home language reinforced as the "national" language, giving them an inherent advantage?

Does the current structure of the Philippine educational system, which mandates a temporary "Mother Tongue" for non-Tagalog speakers while instituting a "Filipino" subject that is functionally Tagalog, create a systemic bias that privileges Tagalog speakers and frames other Philippine languages as merely local stepping stones rather than languages of equal national stature?

Request to end intruder drills

I would like to write my legislator about ending intruder drills in my State. I only have the perspective of a parent, what is the general feelings of educators on this, and is there anything relevant that I should include?

I am just a parent with two kids, and have had countless conversations about intruders. They ask me different scenarios on how they could escape, what they would do in situations they imagine would happen and how they would react.

My middle school daughter this morning had it on her mind again so casually as we were heading to school. If I have to use the back bathroom by the back exit and there is a shooter I would not hide I would just run out the back door, and wanted to talk about the pros and cons of doing that.

It just clicked this morning how many times my kids think about this and their ongoing vigilance just to attend schools. I started wondering if there had been improved outcomes from these drills and can't find anything.

It makes my stomach hurt that they have to just be so aware of it sincenthey walk through school doors for the first time. I don't think students gain anything from participating in these drills, other than anxiety. I want them to feel safe and secure at school and let adults plan for things in the background.

Maybe I am way off base though, I don't have any education background this is just how I'm feeling this morning and was wondering if it's even helpful.

Ai generated homework submissions are making me question if I'm even teaching anymore

Graded 30 homework assignments last night. At least 20 of them had the exact same structure, same transition phrases, same level of polish. These are freshmen who struggle to write a complete sentence in class discussions.

The worst part is I can't prove anything. Parents will defend their kids. Admin will say I need "concrete evidence." Kids will cry and say they worked really hard.

So I'm stuck either accepting obvious cheating or spending hours building a case for each individual student. Meanwhile the kids who are actually doing their own work are getting buried in the middle of the pack because their writing looks "worse" than the ai stuff.

I used to love teaching writing. Now I just feel like a fraud.

Can I learn STEM even if I’m older and have no real knowledge of it?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, I’m also definitely pushing the older thing I’m only 19 years old, but here we go.

I’m really interested in sciences, stuff like bio or psych or even physics is really cool to me but I unfortunately don’t lack the proper brain power to understand any of it. I’m horrendous at math, not to mention sciences back in high school. I plan on taking Stem courses next semester just to see if I’m built for it, I’m in a college to university transfer program that trains you to be ready for uni so I really want to know if I can withstand in stem.

It feels like my brain turns into a puddle every-time I look at equations or anything similar, I’m also on the spectrum but have no clue how much I’m on it, and not to mention horrible memory. I’m stressed for my academic career and just career and life goals in general, it’s quite worrying but I guess that’s what a lot of people are like my age in post-secondary education. Idk maybe I’m overthinking it like usual

Adjunct faculty pay is so low, it should be criminal.

For the amount of tuition charged for credit hours, adjunct faculty make peanuts...literally.

e.g. An institution might charge their college students $800-1200 per credit hour. So a 25 student 4 credit hr class yields $100k . Do you know how much they pay the adjunct to teach? $3500.

That includes grading, creating lesson plans, writing quizzes and exams, and office hours.

It should be a crime for how badly they are taking advantage of these adjuncts.

Yet conditions aren't improving and in this bad economy people are taking these roles...

Is it possible to find the name of my guiduince counselor from middle school? Her name is evading me

TYPO: *GUIDANCE

She was my only friend when I was in middle school. I'd skip lunch and hang out and do my homework in her office. She helped me through tough times, especially when I was going through some difficulties at home. Unfortunately, after going to High school I lost contact. My mother was also not to fond of her. I'd like to let her know I graduated (the last time she'd seen me was the day before I attempted suicide) and I always wanted to let her know that I made it. I don't live in the same town anymore, so physically going there is not an option. Should I email the current staff? I just want to know if it would be worth the trouble.

Using Digital Scavenger Hunts as Active Learning Tool (Free Resource)

Educators - sharing a free tool that's been effective for active learning and student engagement.

Digital scavenger hunts via mobile devices combine physical activity with curriculum content. Students solve clues, complete challenges, and compete on real-time leaderboards.

Educational applications: - STEM: Math problem clues, find geometric shapes, measure distances - Literacy: Vocabulary hunts, literary character clues, reading comprehension challenges - Social Studies: Historical landmark tours, community exploration - Science: Nature identification, ecosystem observation - Test Review: Turn study material into hunt clues

Why it works: - Activates kinesthetic learning - Increases engagement vs. traditional worksheets - Incorporates technology purposefully - Differentiation-friendly (adjust clue difficulty) - Promotes collaboration and problem-solving - Data shows movement improves retention

Practical implementation: - Create hunt in 15-20 mins - Students join with simple code - Works on phones/tablets - Indoor or outdoor capable - Free platform with unlimited hunts

Platform: scavenge.rs

Been using this for brain breaks, review activities, and unit celebrations. Student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Anyone else using gamification in their teaching? What strategies work best for your context?

US education commentary and potential for positive change

edit: classmate mentioned higher economic value provided by pro athletes in comparison to teachers, suggested regulatory or organizational changes that give teachers a bit more power than they currently have because of the educational value they bring to society as an underappreciated part of the American workforce. I was thinking of ways to improve current educational system by taking the positive profitable features of sports, ie team based achievement and community value, and mapping or transferring those to issues that need to be solved and educational improvements to be made. This isn't completely fully formed or coherent but was thinking about the rise of teacher-influencers and if there are alternative ways to make change considering the current politics and economy of the US.

Taking a class and wanted to share a couple words I wrote in response to a classmate's discussion post critiquing the economic inequalities in the United States, specifically referring to the disproportionate amount that American pro athletes are paid compared to teachers.

I think your commentary is nice because it shows the different type of value that the US economy as well as popular opinion places on two types of workers. Increasing government spending on quality education would attract more and better people to the profession.

Athletes provide more entertainment value in the way things are currently working but there seems to be potential for a culture shift if more people direct their attention on more constructive competitions. This is kind of hypothetical and doesn't reflect the current world but if attention was shifted toward and ongoing status competitions of different types i.e. problems solved, number of lives improved, and educational value provided I would hope that could produce more positive change.

It seems unfortunate that the US places a disproportionate amount of value on athletes, and teaching is automatically assumed to be lower value in terms of the lack of attention and funding usually given to it. I think there are other countries with different ways of organizing the government, education, and economy where teaching is associated with higher status but it seems very possible for the United States to move in that positive direction with a lot of work and funding changes. I wonder if there are any creative, alternative, and truthful ways to achieve it under our current economic and political system that at times reflects that the country values profit over quality health and education.

Hey everyone, I’m researching behaviour/reward systems used in classrooms.

I’ve seen things like ClassDojo, token systems, stickers, points, etc — but I’m curious:

  • What actually works well?
  • What frustrates you or slows you down?
  • Is there anything you wish existed for behaviour tracking/rewards?

I’m not selling anything, just trying to understand the challenges before I build anything.
Would really appreciate your insight.

I'm a special education monitor being tasked with teacher duties... ahhhhh!

I've been a special education monitor for about two years now. Recently, I was moved into a room that has students with extensive needs. The classroom teacher is always out of the class, leaving myself and the TA to put out the fires. We have seven kids, all with extreme needs, against myself, the TA and four aides. The problem, the classroom aides have had it installed into them, that they are there as a body, nothing more. While the TA and I are paid enough, and shoild be able to run things effortlessly. Then, when the end of the day comes, the higher ups are confused that we have absolutely no tracking data on anyone. It's overwhelming and feels like a no win scenario.
Anyone else have similar experiences?.

Information for my college´s research :)

Hello. I'm giving a lecture in two weeks and I need help with the information, as I don't trust AI tools. In my project, I'm asked to analyze a case: in a school, learning becomes mechanical, where no one cares about values, reason, faith, or the student's moral development, not even the teachers, who are only interested in exams and homework. My project needs to recover these characteristics of medieval education and apply them to the present day, as well as understand why some teachers consider these approaches outdated. I was thinking of a critique of "student-centered education," which I believe is responsible for the loss of traditional values. But I'm here to hear your perspectives, and if you can provide any information on this, I would be very grateful, as it will be displayed on the large screen in the auditorium where I'll be giving my lecture. :)

Is University worth it?

I started a degree (3 years degree, ) right out of highschool (at 17) that i ended up leaving about 1.5 years in due to not aligning with the degree, COVID and the switch to full time work which caused extreme burnout and confusion at the time.

Im now older and 5 years later decided to re apply to finish the degree due to wanting a career switch (from the same job) at some point and the general feeling creeping up about at least having a degree.

I got an offer to re-start the degree today and now am having second thoughts about actually enrolling. Is it worth it to go back and finish the degree? I also dont have too much interest in the degree, maybe about 5 out of 10 to rate it If i had too.

Is it worth it to go back just for the sake having a degree?

I know it seems like im deciding no. I am asking as if I do go back, It will mean ill be able to go part time at my job and be able to free up time and devote energy into working for myself that I dont get now.

Looking for guidance here. I am already looking to speak to a advisor at the university already.

Some incoming freshmen cannot do elementary school math...

UC San Diego released a report

I glanced at it. Among all the other absolutely appalling data:

The UCSD math department administered a test to 138 students in a remedial math class, and 25% of them got this (1st grade level) question wrong

Fill in the blank: 7 + 2 = _ + 6

61% could not answer this (3rd grade level) question:

Round the number 374518 to the nearest hundred.

Are there absolutely no standards on what students they accept?

Need to automate checking student essays for ai, spending 12+ hours a week on it

Between grading, lesson planning, and actual teaching I'm already maxed out. Now add 2+ hours per class per week just trying to figure out which assignments are real. Reading essays multiple times, comparing to previous work, searching phrases online. Some weeks I spend more time investigating than actually teaching. It's not sustainable. Administration says "academic integrity is important" but won't give us any resources or reduce class sizes. Just expecting us to somehow do more with less. Burned out doesn't even cover it.

Is education Scam ?

I have been thinking this for a while now 🤔

I am 22 from a small family since I was a kid I wanted to become a chartered accountant ( well not cause I liked it, because I searched on Google highest paying job and i found this ) but with time i understood it's way out of my league not financially not mentally so I moved on with normal studying some college and degree.

Now that I go out for a job it's bad I mean so bad the best job i can get was some random office worker less then minimum wage, for sec I felt bad not for myself for my parents those 2 spent there life thinking if they struggle now there son might live a good life. Whenever I think about them I feel sad.

That aside when i check social media and see uneducated people making more then I could ever make a dilivery guy making my monthly salary in a weak and a shop owner making my yearly in a day. I came to that realisation eaither I chose the wrong path while studying or i am just that bad at it.

But still I met many of my classmate they are not doing well eaither well i understand I suck at studying but my class topper he was really good guy he spent most time studying he told me his dad is disabled so he had to study as much as he can after few year when i meet him he was working in a factory I felt really bad for him but still asked how are you doing, while talking he told me his dad just passed away a year ago. That time it hit me does it the education we are getting is wrong or its just a way to keep us busy for 20 year of our life for no reason. That guy had all the right to have a good life but still here we are.

As i said I was not good at studying around class 10th i started trying my hand in trading and made some money still doing it and it's supporting me for last few years but when the realisation comes that I am nothing if I fail in trading i will have nothing to live by its my last resort I am not good at anything i am not healthy enough to do hard work. If I lose in trading it's over for its the only thing that's supporting me and it's not something School gave me.

Then what did I do more then half of my life by now after school i tried learning things like digital marketing, coding, data science then here come AI everyone saying I will take over I don't understand what can I do what should I do.

So this thought that is education Scam comes to my mind those schools institute costing fortune won't even give me an opportunity to live a good life.

school is really stressing me out

hey guys, i just need to vent a bit about school. sometimes i feel like no matter how much i try, i just can’t keep up. homework piles up, tests come fast, and i forget everything i study. it’s really frustrating

some subjects i like, but some i really struggle with. teachers explain fast and i miss things. online classes make it worse because it’s hard to focus and easy to get distracted. even when i try study, my brain feels tired and nothing sticks.

Hiring meeting question

Hi all! I'm about to finish my undergrad and I recently applied for a position as a theatrical technical director at a local city school district.

My question lies in the fact that I was asked to schedule a meeting to " chat a bit more about the position itself as well as the HR logistics side of the position and school district employment." This seems to me like something that would happen after an interview or the like pretty far along in the interview process but is it just a education thing that I'm not familiar with?

Thanks in advance!

Surprising results in a new study about LGBTQ+ inclusion at UK universities

I stumbled on a recent analysis comparing how inclusive different UK universities are for LGBTQ+ students. Some of the results honestly surprised me a few big-name universities didn’t score as high as I’d have expected, while some smaller ones did much better.

Here’s the link if anyone’s interested in reading it: Most LGBTQ+ Friendly Universities UK (2025)

For anyone studying or working in higher education how well do you think universities are actually supporting LGBTQ+ students beyond just policies? Are there still gaps between what’s written and what’s experienced on campus?

READ THIS if you cant study and are tired of PROCRASTINATIING

For the longest time I've struggled with this thing that we construct in our minds which sets magical barriers preventing us from doing things we want to accomplish, until a few months ago. I stumbled across an online article which believe it or not cured me of this disease for good.

Procrastination is the thief of time. Everyone agrees with this but not everyone decides to take action. After reading this online article it explained something about the "2 minute rule" designed by the one and only, David Allen, author of the international bestseller, Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity.

once you understand the methodology behind this method I highly highly highly doubt you will go back to procrastinating how you would before, endlessly doom scrolling and asking why your left behind your peers? yes it will take time but how can you surrender to a figment of your imagination?

Since I cant really explain to you the depth of this in a short reddit post (tbh i don't have time to write it all out) ill leave the link here : The 2-Minute Rule

p.s, This blog also has another 4 methods for getting rid of procrastination but the 2 minute rule is the one that personally helped me the most.

Using AI to Generate Interactive Intelligent Textbooks

I would love to open a discussion on the use of AI to generate interactive, intelligent textbooks that would be free to use by all children in the world. I have done extensive research on this topic, and the latest release of Anthropic Skills makes this process much easier. The process begins with a course description written using the 2001 Bloom Taxonomy learning objective levels. You clearly state the class's goals, and the AI does most of the work to generate a textbook that covers 200+ concepts. I am still working on the tools to generate charts, diagrams, graphic novel short stories, and interactive simulations (MicroSims). Although these tools are designed only for Level 2 textbooks, they have the hooks to be migrated to Level 3 (hyper-personalized learning paths customized in real-time to the needs of the students). Please let me know if you are interested in trying out any of these tools. They are all licensed under a liberal creative license, although you do need to use a Generative AI tool such as Claude to get the most out of the tools.

Reading Eggs is great, but what else? Looking for the next best kids’ learning app! 🌈

Hey lovely people 💕

Please help a slightly confused mama 😅

I have a 6-year-old who absolutely loves watching YouTube Kids especially channels about maths and science! They also enjoy using Reading Eggs for learning.

I’m looking for recommendations for other great educational apps for kids (I’m totally fine with paid ones 💖). Ideally something fun and engaging that teaches science, maths, and other subjects kind of like Reading Eggs but with a bit more variety!

Would love to hear what apps you’ve tried or loved for your little ones’ learning journey 🥰

Thank you in advance! 🌸

Curious how your campus handles compliance reporting (Title IX, Clery, FERPA) - manual or software-based?

I’ve been talking to several university compliance officers who say the reporting workload each semester is brutal - spreadsheets, SharePoint forms, endless audits.

For those of you in Student Affairs, Risk, or Legal - what’s the most painful part of staying compliant?

Do you rely on any tools that actually make it easier? Or is it mostly manual still?

Tips & Tricks for Navigating AI in Education: What You Should Know

AI is quickly transforming how we learn and teach, and here are some quick tips to make the most of it, while avoiding potential pitfalls:

  1. Leverage personalized tools: Use AI-driven learning apps that adapt to your pace and style for more effective studying.

  2. Balance tech with human interaction: Don’t let AI replace meaningful conversations with teachers or classmates; keep that personal touch.

  3. Stay aware of privacy: Be cautious with the data you share on AI platforms, especially with sensitive info.

  4. Keep critical thinking alive: Use AI as a support, not a crutch, question the results and think independently.

  5. Seek out equitable access: If you're in a position to influence education, push for tech that’s accessible to all students to prevent those who can’t afford it from falling behind.

  6. Use AI to motivate learning: Try gamified AI tools to make studying less tedious and more engaging.

What are your favorite ways to use or prepare for AI in education? Drop your tips below!

family isn’t supportive

how do i deal with my family being unsupportive? they tell me how hard college/ university would be, the thing is… i had honours at one point. i’m the only child that graduated in my family… yet they tell me that “school isn’t for everyone” and “it’s gonna be really hard, what matters is job experience” (eg being a retail manager) the field i want to go for is in healthcare… i know it’s hard but it is really difficult knowing they’re aren’t even sure i can do it. they say they want what’s best for me… is their excuses.

(F23 soon 24) edit: i guess im also at the point of turning to strangers for support and advice… this might be a confusing post but i just feel, lost.

Ever wondered how to become popular at school?

Here are some tips I've learnt about becoming popular

Back in high school I used to be really unpopular, not to many people liked me, so going to college gave me a fresh start. One of my goals of going to college was to become as popular as possible. And here are a list of things that I found that make you popular and which makes girls flock you:

Don't be an asshole

Don't give a crap about other people's opinions of you

Find a group of mates right of the bat and connect with more people from there.

Be enthusiastic with everyone you meet and be unique but don't be weird at all

Become genuinely interested in other people

Don't be afraid to go up to pretty girls, they're just people

Don't be afraid to make a joke (even bad ones, how else are you meant to learn? ofc dont make them weird ones)

Don't be afraid to take bad jokes, people are gonna make bad jokes about u eventually, dont take it to heart, they dont actually mean what they say

Just remember that humour is possibly the best thing you can use as leverage and is the most charismatic thing you can do (dont over do it, there's a fine balance, if you over do it then people will see you as a joker)

Dress well

Approach as many people as possible, the more the better

Build your confidence, if you cant then the least you could do is fake it using body language tips and then you can fake it till u become it

Straight back, shoulders back, head slightly back, chin straight, dont walk slow but dont EVER be in a rush, be relaxed with how you move and how you speak

always wear an accessory, chains are overrated, watches give u that classy look

There are probably more things that I'm forgetting and this is probably the most 'unpopular' ah thing I could be doing but I only got popular to see what it's like and frankly the complications is a bit much and but the benefits you get by becoming popular is unreal. Would I do it again? probably not, it's a bit time-consuming with the amount of people you've gotta maintain connection with.

For those of you that want a more in-depth guide to becoming popular then there's only TWO books you need to read.
'How to win friends and influence people' AND 'Models'

Why are the classmates so mean and nasty to each other in school and university...

Going to school and university feels like you are going to a ghetto literally lol... People are mean to each other for no reason... it was started with the middle school bullying...

You have to search for friends outside of school/uni too because they aren't your friends...

New fun, educational STEM picture book

Hi — I’m Hector Morales a cybersecurity professional and new author of the STEAM picture book series Jake & Eli’s Adventures. I’m hoping this to be an educational book series for elementary school children to educate them on the origins and future of technology as well as how to stay safe in its use.

The title is “Where Did Computers Come From?” by Hector Morales. If you’re interested in purchasing it, you can find it available online on Amazon (https://amzn.to/4op11k5) or any other major online bookstore. I would be honored if you would consider giving this book a chance. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

Teachers/Admin: Are we compromising student privacy by posting class photos online?

I'm a teacher and this is something I've been thinking about constantly. We are encouraged to post class photos, project groups, and event pictures to social media or the school website for engagement. But what happens to the faces in those pictures ten years later?

I recently saw a demonstration of a search system one like faceseek natural that can instantly match a blurry childhood photo to a current adult profile. This means that every single picture we post of a student, even if we don't use their name, becomes a permanent, traceable biometric ID.

Are schools doing enough to protect our students' future privacy? What are the legal guidelines for using student photos? Does the school have a policy for digitally blurring or scrubbing faces after a certain number of years? I feel like we are creating a massive, irreversible digital footprint for minors without truly informed consent.

Spent weeks learning a subject and someone using CHATGPT gets a higher grade after spending 30 minutes on it

It's exactly as the title says. I spent WEEKS reading books, buying books, digging through Academic Journals, contacting professionals in the field of study, and memorizing my presentation just to get a B+. Someone else in the class had some AI tool generate their entire PowerPoint presentation and then had ChatGPT write a 2 page script for them. The only effort this person put into their work was changing the wording of the script until it passed an AI checker. They read off the script, couldn't answer questions, and genuinely had no idea what their topic was even about, and somehow the professor couldn't recognize any of this and that person gets an A.

I slaved away to learn everything I needed too. I practiced my presentation and put effort into it just to get screwed over once again by AI users. It's honestly so demoralizing. I see more people change ChatGPT essays into something passable than I see people actually writing essays. The college I attend talks a big game about catching cheaters, but one person was caught using AI and the professor let them rewrite it instead of going to Honor Council (they rewrote it with AI).

I was complaining about a reading we were assigned the other day because it was boring and miserable, and a senior said to me, "Oh. You actually read the articles? I just ask [insert AI name here, I forgot what it was called] and it gives 2 paragraphs about the reading with bullet points. Under those bullet points are key phrases from the reading. I havent read a single article since freshman year, and I have A's in almost every class."

This makes me want to give up. It isn't fair.

Did anyone else lose interest in their studies right at the end of uni? How did you cope?

I am about to chose a topic for my masters thesis and instead of being excited about it I really dread it. I used to be super interested in what I study and even do related things in my free time. Now suddenly nothing feels interesting anymore. Neither the possible topics in my working group nor anything else seems interesting to do, it feels like everything has been researched anyway and none of the findings are relevant, especially in political decisions. So why bother? But when I'm thinking about just starting over with something completely different I also can't really find anything right now that I would like to do. Is it just seasonal depression? Did anyone else feel like this at the end of uni and how did you cope?

For kids in special education. I feel like the best thing a teacher can do is just acknowledge what makes the kid happy should be the most important thing. Let them decide their own path. Regardless of circumstance.

I’m 28M I had an IEP and I was in a program with academic support where you would go to get your homework done from regular Ed classes. And one of my biggest struggles was math I struggled in math to the point that I was like barely passing even with all the support I was getting. And my case manager, this is when I was a senior I failed algebra the first time and then I had to retake it. And I passed it, but barely. But my case manager was trying to pull me out of there because he thought that the program was just too overwhelming and I didn’t even get the most basic concepts. But at the same time I just wanted to navigate it myself. Not have someone else dictate what they thought was best. I didn’t care whether my math skills were far below average or that I tested really low. The point is I just wanted a chance to try but every time I try, he would literally point out. How I was doing poorly in the class and he would try to explain that I was a fool for trying to want to stay in there. But I passed the class anyway.

Also, I have ADHD and I’m on the autism spectrum. And I just hated how I just felt like I wasn’t treated equally to everyone else. it was a joke. I don’t care how serious the disability is that a kid has. I believe as a special ed teacher or case manager. You have an obligation, not just to give them the same opportunities that the mainstream students have. But tell them that their lives can be just the same. Don’t look at it through the so-called BS individual needs. They’re the ones who needs are. I don’t care how severe they’re learning deficit is I don’t care if they’re in high school and their concept levels of math are still at the elementary level if they want to be in an algebra class or in geometry let them be in there. it’s about exposure and learning not passing a stupid test. If they’re happy in the environment, let them stay there. Don’t use it as justification to take them out of the general ad and put them in remedial classes which is what I was in. The beginning part of my high school years. And even when I got out of there into more mainstream courses, I still had my case manager question what I wanted to do saying well you gotta be realistic and look at the costs of what could happen.

That’s another thing let the kids choose their career path don’t think of yourself as a career guidance counselor. Think of yourself as unique to find a way to get them to where they want to be in life. If they say, I wanna be a doctor, a lawyer and engineer airline pilot. or a data analyst think of their dreams first and then put the disability second. Don’t even ask the questions though what if you don’t get that job or what if you don’t end up liking it. Just leave it on them because at the end of the day when they leave high school the only one who’s responsible is them. And if they fail it then that’s not on you. So pretty much my best advice is the best kind of help you can give kids like this is. Let them navigate their terrain don’t be hands-on. And the best help you can give is only if they ask for it.

Talking about consent in class - scenes I could use with 8th graders (12/13/14 yo)

Dear teachers, tomorrow is International Day against Bullying at school and I’m supposed to talk about consent with my 8th graders (we’re in France so they are in « 4ème », so between 12 & 14 yo). Before tackling the topic with the video « consent with tea », I’d like them to study some movie extracts, especially scenes that may used to be considered cute or normal at the time. It can’t be too explicit though as the point is not to shock them (so not in the like of promising young woman).

So far I have :

-Sierra Burgess, the scene where she kisses the guy while he thinks she’s someone else.

-Kissing Booth when that guy slaps her butt and then they fight

-Clueless, the car scene where her friend tries to kiss her and calls her a tease when she says no

Any other short scenes in mind that I could use? Thanks in advance

How does the use of English-based symbols like F = ma, instead of native-language equivalents, influence peoples’ conceptual understanding and engagement with scientific concepts across different linguistic and cultural contexts?

F=ma is universally taught as "F" standing for force, "m" for mass and "a" for acceleration but if we were to use localise it in Russian or Chinese or Swahili the same formula might look like this:

С=М×У (сила=масса×ускорение)

N=M×K (nguvu=misa×kuharakisha)

力=质×加 (力=质量×加速度)

English being the lingua franca and Latin alphabet being the default, I imagine this creates English-centrism all across the world when it comes to maths and physics, given that while the symbol F standing for force might make intiutive sense for a native English speaker, I'm not sure you would be able to say the same about a Turkish speaker where Kuvvet aka the letter K would stand for force.

The question is does this constitute a barrier? We do it with certain Greek letters and just learn that delta Δ means change or μ means friction coefficient but I would be interested to hear whether people have difficulty with intiutive understanding and engagement due to the language of scientific notation?

(p.s.: no idea if the translations make sense, used AI for it)

Trouble with Understanding

I keep hearing a statistic that sounds too incredible to be real. According to the National Literacy Institute 54% of Americans are reading at grade 5 level or below. That is in the range of functional illiteracy. If true it suggests a scary future for the United States, and maybe others nations as well. Functionally illiterate doesn’t mean you can’t read, it means you have trouble understanding what you read. The words don’t automatically attach to other concepts and form networks of understanding, extending previous knowledge.

Not reading with comprehension hinders your ability to think critically and assess the value of arguments. Therefore, the message the writer is sending may get lost in a fog. In a world where reading skills are essential this can be a major disability. The amount of paperwork a normal working person must deal with in their everyday life is huge, and it doesn’t matter if you are a professional or general labourer. We are all required to respond to requests concerning our medical coverage, vehicle and home insurance, taxes, employment information, various banking and financial data, plus numerous additional pieces relating to purchases or desired purchases, and together they can be overwhelming for even a totally literate person.

Functionally illiterate people need help getting the information required to make good decisions, and most of them know it. Where they get their information is from family and friends. This may not be a bad thing unless, of course, their friends and family are in a similar situation with reading comprehension. If that sounds unlikely, remember the 54% figure. According to that statistic more than half the population shares this problem. In effect, getting good information from others is no better than the flip of a coin.

As a consequence, functionally illiterate people rely heavily on what they hear, and what they hear is related to who, or what, they choose to listen to. This puts a great deal of importance on the quality of information being put out by radio and television media. If it is full of misinformation and outright lies it can cause confusion, even conflict. However, regulating the media is frowned upon due to the wide threshold we give to supporting freedom of speech. As well, prosecuting media who abuse their power is usually a civil matter requiring deep pockets for a high cost litigation process, which may go on for years.

The obvious solution rests with education, but obvious doesn’t mean easy. At times it appears those in power would prefer their population wasn’t too educated. Perhaps leaders believe an educated population would be more difficult to manage. It’s no secret that funding for public schools always seems to be bare bones and what little is budgeted may come with demands for ideological components - some of which are blatantly anti-educational. Opening children’s minds to all possibilities and teaching them how to make objective judgements has dropped way down on the priority list. If this 54% statistic is factual, and it appears to have solid supporting evidence, that number will likely grow. At present discussions surrounding its impact remain under the radar, and actions to solve it are almost non-existent. Where this will take America as a nation is anyone’s guess.

Question about distance education.

Hi, I'm a 13yo male and I have a chronic illness and I was wondering just how worth it it would be to go through distance education, with having to repeat a year with how much I've missed and also needing to show proof of my illness?

It's been taking months now and I haven't even gotten started, we're still just trying to get me to actually be able to do the distance education, is it actually worth the wait?

Because I've read a few different things about it and I've seen both positive and negative things.

A specific thing I keep hearing with my distance ed is I will occasionally meet with other children also doing it and we all study in one spot then once the day of lessons is over we head home and it happens every 3–5 weeks. Is this true?

But i feel like a lot of stuff i wasn’t taught because the people teaching me figured its common sense and that i already know it. And if they did teach me, I’ve already forgotten.
