Integrating physiological safety data into school swimming curricula

Cold water immersion triggers an involuntary respiratory response when water contacts the face. This autonomic mechanism involves an immediate, uncontrollable intake of air, which presents significant risks during sudden water entry. School swimming programs currently utilize heated pools, which do not allow for the practical application of this biological information.

Incorporating the science of this respiratory reflex into health education is a necessary step to increase safety awareness for diverse water environments.
