My wife and I have two kids together, ages 3 and 6. Our 6 year old has somewhat of a learning disability. He is a very slow learner and his main issue is that he struggles with verbal communication. He is receiving partial special ed at the public school he attends. He is in his homeroom/general ed classes for the majority of the day, but he is pulled out for special ed for various subjects. He also receives Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech Therapy (ST) at the public school he goes to. We get him help outside of school for OT and ST as well. When he was in kindergarten last year, the school had him evaluated for autism. The evaluation results showed that he is on the spectrum, but the school mentioned to not take the evaluation as a clinical diagnosis. So we had him evaluated by a child psychologist. The child psychologist came to the conclusion that he is not autistic and was confused with the school's evaluation (she compared her evaluation with the schools evaluation).
He is now in the 1st grade and is failing his spelling tests. When he comes home with his folder, his spelling test paper shows to be blank. He never writes anything down on his spelling test. This has been going on for about a month and a half now. The school has never reached out to my wife and I about this. I personally see this as a big red flag. My wife and I have reached out to the school today to talk about his spelling tests. We're going to meet his teacher this Friday.
We are thinking about pulling him out of public school and putting him in a Catholic private school. We feel as though that the public school he is going to isn't helping him at all. I would like to get other people's thoughts about what is better, public school or private school.
