Please help me with a very challenging class (elementary music)

The school I work at is very challenging, there are a lotttt of behavioral issues. One class in particular (2nd grade) will not listen to me. Almost all of them are incapable of following directions. They are mean to each other. I can barely get through a 40 min class without being interrupted at least every 30 seconds.

I am an inexperienced teacher, I didn’t even major in music Ed. I majored in music performance and started private teaching. I really liked private teaching and wanted to get involved in school. I am trying my best and plan a lot. I spend hours planning every lesson outside of school and it’s not paid. So it’s super frustrating. I know kids don’t understand this though.

I try to give individual attention as needed but as soon as I talk to one kid another kid is doing something inappropriate elsewhere in the room. Today I tried to play the xylophones with them and I told them to be gentle. I demonstrated, we practiced on the ground. Then as soon as I let them play majority of them are wacking them like they wanted to destroy it and keys were flying. I took the instruments away immediately

I don’t want to ruin class for the kids who do well and try really hard to focus despite their classmates and environment. But it’s overwhelming with the amount of issues. I’d love to do the instruments with the kids who can listen and follow directions but if I did that I don’t know what to do with other kids and if I have them worksheets or something it would be mayhem.

What can I do to make this a successful class? It’s the last period of the day, and I’m tired of disappointing the kids who deserve a fun music class.

Thank you!
