Choosing degree/possible career

First off I don't if this is the proper sub for this but figured I had to start somewhere. My question is this: Everyone that I know and meet everywhere , friends, family, even random people I meet, are ALWAYS urging me to go to college. Not for any specific degree or field or career path or anything, just to go to college. Don't get me wrong I see the value of higher education but I don't want to end up like my cousin, who has a masters degree and doesn't use it for anything because she ''isn't interested'' in the field anymore and is tens of thousands of dollars in debt. So what is a good way to look around and find something that seems interesting and valuable to go to college for and how would you suggest making that you are actually ready to commit to that career path/field and work in it for decades after you leave college? Thank you very much to anyone who takes the time to answer. I am a 20 year old male if needed for reference.
