Is there a way to convert quarters to semesters?

I’m applying to an internship, and the application asks how many semesters I completed, but my university used a quarter system.

Should I respond with the number of terms I completed (8), or is there a way to convert the number to semesters?

Need someone to take over my Facebook study group for future teachers that’s growing too fast but requires little work

I started a Facebook group for students working towards being teachers. I made it for free to help others and in less than 2 weeks it’s boomed to 900 people. It’s growing every day. I want to keep it free to help people. It requires little work at all, but I hate being online so this is not ideal since now I feel like I need a social media account. People add themselves to the group, then add themselves to chats. I filter people from the fb group to chats for study groups chats on discord. It’s low maintainence and hundreds can do it without asking a question, but I can’t continue to own it. I didn’t intend for things to be popular beyond 100 people and expected it to die off, but at this rate it’s not dying off. I want to find someone who will take it over ASAP, but isn’t going to charge people to join. Any decent human want to take over so I don’t have to delete it? Help students become teachers!

Crowdfunding campaign for educational courses - reasonable or selfish?

I've been considering whether I should try creating a crowdfunding campaign because I want to study 3D character modeling for animation movies and I cannot afford covering tuition. On one hand the thought of asking for financial help for something like this, which benefits only myself feels uncomfortable, however that's the only way to make it happen given the current circumstances. Is it reasonable to create such a campaign at all and if yes, what could you advise?

Is anyone else concerned by how the "viral" craze is affecting the youth/society?

Now that social media is an ever present part of society; does anyone else think this will affect the youth, and future generations in a negative way? First off, the internet is freedom, you could learn anything, and potentially be anyone; with the ability to support yourself, off of your internet career. The concerning part for me, is what I call "The Kardashian Effect."

People are becoming rich, and famous for no apparent reason, except for their follower count, and their online presence; I can't think of a time in history, where people have become rich, successful, and influential on a mass level, without a discernable skill. This is great for potential financial freedom, but it seems like the youth is now chasing this way of life, while shunning their educational development.

This has become the standard for majority of my younger students. They don't read any contemporary, or past works; most of my students sit on their phones all day, and scroll. In my opinion, educating yourself on different aspects of life, is vital for the development of who you are, on an emotional, existential, and intellectual level. I feel this lack of intrinsic exploration is leading to these mass levels of depression, and anxiety . People seem to be searching for "identity" in this vapid internet world, instead of indulging in the practices of the past.

What do you guys think? This is subjective, and my opinion, on how society is moving. I'm more than happy to hear conflicting view points, and possibly change my perception. Cheers to everyone, and have a happy new year ✌

If I want to alter educational curricula on a national level what career path should I follow? (US/UK)

I'm very interested in education and the prospect of altering educational curricula. In particular I think that it would be good if there were a greater focus on philosophy (particularly ethics), critical thinking, and discussion of important global problems.

What is the best career path if I want to affect this change? Should I become a teacher? Should I try to get a job in a government's department for education? Should I do both (being a teacher first)? Any advice at all would be much appreciated.

American education

I am a Japanese high school student. And some, but not all, of the teachers around me seem to like the "American style" approach to teaching, such as focusing less on paper test scores and more on questions from students.

Of course, the way they think of "American style" may be a little different from the way education is actually conducted in the United States.

Do you think the American education is good?

Book recommendations

Hello everyone! I am looking for a book to read on modern education. What I am looking for is a book where each chapter is an essay written by an academic researcher or other expert in a field related to education and each essay is compiled in a section with other essays relating to a major topic that is significant to education. A great example for a similar book is "The promise of infrastructure". What would you recommend?

Confused on the definition of differentiated instruction

I was looking at many sources. One sources discusses about giving options for students to give their work to you. For instance, students can give you a poster, art picture, etc for a project.

Does differentiated instruction mean just when you are teaching a concept or it also includes giving them questions for practice during class time and give them homework ? The word instruction in "differentiated instruction" is only applied when a teacher teaches a concept during class time.

I just confused on the definition. I am trying to understand what it really means instead of memorizing it.

Thank you so much.

Question about analytical scoring vs holistic scoring

What I understand is that holistic scoring is give you a single grade for an assessment like 10/10 in a quiz. For analytical scoring, you give a grade for each criterion in say a project. For instance, a project's total grade is 100, 60 out of the 100 marks is for analysis and calculations , 30 out of 100 is for presentation of the report, and 10 out of 100 for presentation. But you are still giving an overall score for the project even if you grade the assessment based on categories. So analytical scoring should be a special case of holistic scoring.

I am still confused on the difference between analytical scoring and holistic scoring. Can someone provide an example that can distinguish the two? Thanks!

Has there ever been an attempt to have a dual college and trade school program?

In my area, it’s apparent that there is a lack of people in skilled trades. It is a nightmare to get a plumber, electrician, stonemason, etc to work on your home and the few in the area book weeks ahead and charge well.

I also know a lot of people who did liberal arts, got a lot of personal value out of it. It’s fun to talk to someone with a deep knowledge of literature, history, art, etc.

I’ve felt for a while that being knowledgeable about art and being able to weld shouldn’t be be mutually exclusive.

Are there any initiatives to try to allow for a good liberal education with skilled trades or in demand skills? The idea that you can’t do skilled work with your hands and study humanities seems wrong imho.

So I've been out of school for a while now and im wanting to improve my knowledge a bit and I decided to try and find a field to study, not as a career or anything just to better myself and im hoping for a reference book showing all the sub sets and respective groupings of scientific fields.

The book dpes not have to have absolute detail or anything just has to break down the fields into their sub fields.

I tried looking for it myself but I just get garbage instead.

Advice for gap year after undergrad? [x-post from /r/teachers]

I wanted to share this post on this subreddit as I'd like to hear advice from people from other sectors in education. While I'm mainly interested in teaching I'd love to hear about other programs related to education!

I am currently a fourth-year undergraduate student hoping to work in education after college.. I'm planning to take a gap year after college, and I was wondering what your recommendations are for a gap year.

I am planning to take a program where I can teach domestically or abroad to hone my teachings skills, but I'm open to doing other programs. I recently applied to JET and I'm in the process of applying to EPIK, CIEE, and Urban Teachers. I'm also considering Teach for America and City Year, but I am a bit unsure of applying to them. I'd like to hear about your other recommendations of programs you can do after your undergrad, or other potential ideas for a productive gap year! Thank you everyone and I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

GRAD School FAFSA work around? 👀

So this past summer I applied to grad school and got accepted with a nice half-tuition scholarship (for 1 year program). But I would still have to pay a lottt so I differed my application for a year. Now I am applying again and noticed that I filled out my previous FAFSA incorrectly on question 29: Student's Grade Level in College in 2020-2021: 5th yr./other undergraduate (instead of properly selecting Continuing graduate) . Now When I do it properly for 2021-2022 the application is asking my net worth and investment net worth. I do have some nice investments but I suspect once college sees it they wont offer me such good scholarship this time around (though I am hoping for even bigger one). Should I still do the same thing as I did earlier or will it backfire somehow in the long run?

Started uni and being told it's pointless

Hey, I started uni in September and yeah, there were few struggles in first trimester, because everything online, some lecturers seemed very dismissive, but after writing assignment about self development, I realized that my choosen sphere has so many perks and I'm kinda inspired to go ahead, because I really want the degree In finance. Anyway, uni I started is not the best in UK, but not the worst either, issue here is that I have been told I'm wasting my time and that my degree won't be recognised anywhere, so it's pointless. It kinda put me down, because it came out of my loved one mouth.. I didn't think about it much at first, I thought he is just angry and disappointed in himself, because he, himself, has a degree in IT, but doesn't have luck to find a job in his sphere for years now. Plus there were one other person saying that I'm too old for that as well (I'm 32) and I should start thinking about family and kids - you know the older the women the less possibility to have kids blah blah blah I look at this possible degree positively, because I have always been into finance and it's pretty demanding industry, I can picture my future with it, but these people telling me that I'm wasting my time really puts me down. Am I really wasting my time? I'm confused.

Am I too old to get a second degree?

I graduated college on 2012, majored in Financial Management. It was a practical major, and I thought I could easily get jobs. It was. But I really didn’t like it. The time when I was choosing a major, I didn’t really know what to do. 2012-2019, I worked, just to work, and not to really succeed. I was never promoted because I only do what’s expected, and not exceed it. Never really put so much effort because well…I didn’t like what I do. Now I’m a housewife (no kids), and I feel like such a failure. I’ve been interested in interior design since I was in college but never really thought of it as a career. But now, I love it, and I want to invest my time on it. My husband offered to pay for school, but I said no since we’re saving to buy a house. His offer is still on the table, and I’m planning to say yes on 2023, but I’ll be 31 years old by then. Am I too old to go and get my dream?

How can you apply spaced repetition if you have a lot of courses to study over 3 months along with usual classes?

I'm a medical student, I have around 50 courses to study over the next 3 months for the final exam. I also have daily classes. How would you apply spaced repetition in such a situation? Any past experiences?

Should I major in Medical Lab Science or Math? Help please!

First of all, I'm sorry if this isn't the right subreddit to ask this in, but I'm new to reddit, so don't be afraid to direct me to a subreddit that is better fit for this question.

Anyway. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should get a degree in Medical Laboratory Science (Bachelor's) or a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science (the minor in CS is because most math jobs seem like they require some coding). Ideally I would get a degree in statistics because I find that more interesting than math, but nowhere near me offers a Bachelor in statistics. My passion is linguistics, but I decided not to pursue that because I actually want to have a job when I graduate.

I think some of the pros of Medical Lab Science are:

Hands on

Easy to get a job right out of college

Good pay/stable work

Fulfilling (I would feel like I was doing something good)

Cons:

Not a ton of room for growth

Limiting in what I can do with the degree

The pros of a Math degree would be:

A lot of different job options

More room for growth

Potentially higher salary

Semi prestigious degree (hiring managers would think I was smart/had problem solving skills for having this degree... hopefully)

Cons:

Hard to get a job right out of college/hard to get my foot in the door

Less fulfilling (my job wouldn't center around helping people)

Harder course work/would probably have to fail/retake more classes

I would really love to hear from anyone who has either of these degrees. Experience, what you do now, your pay, regrets. etc. I'm in the US, if that makes a difference.

What's your favorite one-day activity? Could be fun. Could be challenging. Doesn't matter. I teach US History, but it doesn't have to relate.

Does my bachelor thesis make sense?

At first I wanted to write my thesis about comapring b2c and b2b branding. A professor told me that this wil not be accepted as it is too much textbook style and I should narrow it down. As I need to have a B2B focus I decided for brand building in logistics. I already spent a lot of time on reading articles and developing research questions. However everytime I read over the thesis proposal the less it makes sense to me. Therefore I would like to ask for an honest opinion what you think of the following:

- What are the developments of digitalization concerning the marketing in the logistics industry in the last 15 years?

As a starting point for this thesis the overall development concerning digitalization of marketing / branding in the logistics industry will be analysed. This will be done by a systematic literature review based on previous and available secondary research.

- What is the predominant brand architecture within the logistics industry and what does this mean for the companies’ social media strategy?

Branded house, house of brands, sub brands or endorsed brands? There will be research on the main brand hierarchy/architecture within the logistics industry. According to Michael Schmidt Companies present the customer with hundreds of different brand channels on one social network from different regions or products but this damaging the brand and it's an obstacle to building relationships (Schmidt 2016). Therefore, this thesis will examine what impact the chosen brand architecture has on the choice and number of brand channels as well as the content creation.

- Which are the most useful social media networks for B2B logistic marketers and how are they used?

The logistics industry has generally been viewed as slow in adopting social media (Denktaş-Şakar and Sürücü 2020). There will be deeper research on which of the social media sites are the most useful for B2B logistic companies to strengthen their brand as logistic service providers engage with social media for different branding motives (Serbetcioglu and Göçer 2020). The differences in the usage of different social media networks as well in the content creation will be examined.

- Which B2C brand building strategies have an increasing relevance in the B2B logistics industry?

B2B buying centres are often described as consisting of not emotional, but rational persons. Relationship is a key factor of B2B therefore further research will be done on the topic if emotions in branding are only useful in B2C as stated in a couple of papers. It has been shown that B2B purchasers are sensitive to brands especially in a complex buying situation with a high degree of uncertainty (Viardot 2017). Moreover, B2C has already realized the benefits of user-generated content or storytelling, but are those strategies also relevant for B2B logistics?

Dealing with difficult coworkers

I am a substitute teacher at an elementary school where Ive been working for 3 full years now. I began working in the special-ed department for grades K-2 and had a wonderful time with a great group of experienced, reliable, and helpful paraprofessionals and other professionals. This year, that department has been completely replaced and there are two new paras in particular that are well-known for their gossip even though they have been there for 3 short months (one in particular has a worse reputation in terms of being kind of rude and demanding of her assigned students and with some of her colleagues). On Friday, I was assigned to a kindergarten class with an awesome teacher, but I just so happened to get stuck with the "bad" para. She was not friendly, was trying to control the room but refused to help with instruction - and was also assigned to take care of 3 kids instead of 1 which apparently was too overwhelming for her.

One of her students was being out of control during my phonics instruction and she was not stepping in. After a third firm warning I asked the student to be seated beside me and not next to his friends (this para is in charge of keeping them away from one another). She then accosted me in front of the entire class and demanded the student sit back where he was and I was told not to "bother him again." After 5 more grueling hours of passive-aggressive comments and random child-like behaviors, the day was over and she left. I was thinking about taking this to the office but I wanted to think about it some more to make sure I wasnt being too rash. After some more reflection, I think the right thing to do is to address her behavior and gossiping directly to the principal to put a stop to it. I only heard those things up until Friday, but now I see she does not have a persona that fits in well with younger grades. Am I in the wrong? I like my job and hope to land a full time gig next year, I dont need someone trying to kill my vibe every time they see me. Thanks!

Research paper help

I completed a project with 2 other students we did our research separately so the project is in 3 parts. I am using apa 6 style per professors request. I have a cover page, header with page number, and references. Since the project is in 3 parts I put a heading for each so there are three headings. The header only has a title and page number no names of the group members. How do I indicate which student did which part. Should I make a table of contents? All of our names are already on the cover page.

Are genealogy or self analysis classes common?

I grew up in a Mennonite community. My parents sent me to a small (50 students between 8 grades) church-run school in the area. Anyway, in 8th grade, all students were required to write an "autiobiography" of sorts. The curriculum required a detailed analysis of your family, your genealogy, your dreams and ambitions, your hobbies, and your strengths and weaknesses among other things.

Do public schools often offer classes like that?

For self learners - is it better to take one class at a time, or multiple classes at the same time like is traditionally done at school?

I'd like to take multiple courses from the MIT Open Courseware site. Most of the classes are arranged to be taken in a semester - which lasts six months - alongside other classes. However, Im not a college student and don't have to fulfill degree requirements - so should I stick to this class format? Would it be more effective for me as a learner to take just one class at a time, and finish it in a month or two instead? When it comes to learning new material (in my case math and computer science), does intensity trump steadiness?

Abolishing Greek Life: Practical Strategies for Real Change?

Apparently the frats at UNC have not only been drugging and raping people (old news) but now dealing cocaine by the kilo out of their frat houses.

The only thing the administration has to say is that the people named today aren’t current students (a statement that seems to be contradicted by the NYT) which apparently makes this not the school’s problem.

Does anyone here have any insight into how deep frats have their hooks into schools, and by what specific mechanisms?

I was thinking that parents and alumni could possibly band together and pledge to only donate to their schools after Greek life had been abolished, but the conventional wisdom is that basically only fraternity members donate in the first place. Is that true, or is that Greek-organization propaganda?

Have you battled the Grip of the Greeks at your institution? How did it go?

But looking for a few suggestions. General ones are fine, as well, but:

  1. Anyone have a suggestion for the best/more scathing argument AGAINST multicultural education?
  2. Any particular suggestions for where to begin?
  3. Do you suggest doing more of a 'survey' course? Or taking one topic and going a longer distance with that? (I am always partial to the latter)
  4. I've seen plenty of syllabi online, but any that you have that you think were particularly good?
  5. Any suggestions for a final project/paper?
  6. Any suggestions for NON-TEXTUAL materials? videos, podcasts, films, etc.

Regular Cleaning and Disinfection is Key to a Healthy Business | Brian Marshall Tampa

“The Coronavirus outbreak has led to the rise in death toll!” says the headline. The world was taken aback when the outrageous coronavirus pandemic hit hard. With public spaces, educational institutes, workplaces and commercial transportations shutting down, it all came to a standstill. However, we are now moving ahead, adapting the new normal along with necessary precautions. Initially, when the world-wide pandemic was at a peak, it was difficult to sink in the beyond belief damage caused by the outrageous virus. Cleaning and disinfecting practices took a massive rise as they became the need of the hour. Moreover, social distancing, frequent hand washing along with wearing masks, gloves and PPE became essential.

What Preventive Measures to Take?

To reduce the risk of exposure from the dreadful virus, it is important to cater to preventive measures. Indeed, to avoid the spread of germs, cleaning and disinfecting workplaces, commercial transportations and public spaces are essential. Today, disinfecting services is an important part of reopening businesses and workplaces amidst the pandemic. Routine cleaning is not enough as it removes dirt and impurities but does not kill germs effectively.

Greetings! I am Roy Marshall From Tampa Florida. I own Total Remediation LLC and have been providing all cleaning related services from a long time. With my experience in the industry I believe Cleaning is important but disinfecting is necessary. Disinfecting services may not necessarily make your surfaces look clean but will ensure dead germs. Many disinfecting services in Tampa will provide you with wonderful facilities for the better functioning of your company. To cater to these requirements and provide detailed guidance, the cleaning and disinfecting services emerge as a great asset. These services in Tampa help you understand the safety measures and enforced guidelines for running businesses effectively.

Long term sub position?

I’m a December graduate that got called into interview for a position at my dream school yesterday. The position is only a spring-semester long term sub job, and is also outside my content area. I jumped at the chance to get any kind of face time with the admin at that dream school, but I really don’t want to sub for a whole term outside my area.

Before this interview came up, I had planned on looking for a job IN my content area and if I couldn’t find one I would sub where needed for the term.

If they offer and I turn down the position, will it hurt my chances at getting another interview at the school someday? Should I let them know now, before they make their decision that I’m not interested or wait until they call to find out if I’m even being offered the spot?

Why Commercial Cleaning Is the Need of The Hour? | Brian Marshall Tampa

Well, the simple answer is a clean and hygienic environment. While, social distancing, wearing masks and frequent hand sanitization is top priority in workplaces, the safety of the employees and staff is essential too. Although businesses or workplaces may hire cleaning help, the real cleaning is not performed. With quick vacuuming and just emptying of trash, your cleaning service does not suffice. Because deeper dust and impurities still lie within the upholstery of work spaces. And with this, you cannot just rely on preventive measures from your side. Along with preventive measures, maintaining a clean, sanitized and hygienic surrounding is the need of the hour. For starters, businesses and commercial premises can hire commercial cleaning services. You may avail to such services in Tampa, who provide with the best care and facility. They will ensure cleanliness and hygiene keeping in mind the safety of people.

Greetings everyone! This is Roy Marshall, owner of Total Remediation LLC situated in Tampa, Florida. Who does not want a safe and sound surrounding? With businesses reopening and commercial premises resuming, commercial cleaning services is requisite. Therefore, a regularly performed, in depth professional cleaning leaves your surrounding fresh and clean.

Your grades don't equal your value as a person

With semester 1 ending... it can be a very stressful time. Remember this, your academic grades do not equal your self worth. They do not measure your value, potential or ability as a human being. They are simply a measure of performance. Your performance is dependent on many different variables, some being out of your control and many being improvable with some self awareness.

Remember this as well.. where there is a will, there is a way. Even if you did not meet the requirements you were trying to reach for whatever you were trying to reach them for... its not the end all be all. If you truly want something, you will find a way to make it happen. Never attribute your self worth to your academic performance. There are too many other variables at play.

Letting go of comparison, shame, guilt, regret and things similar is the first step to being successful... in any form of life. If you find yourself feeling these emotions, feel them fully for what they are, but do not begin thinking that they are the facts.

Happy holidays everyone. PMs are open.

All You Need to Know about Water Mitigation — Brian Marshall Florida

Floods or any water-related disaster can cause knock-on effects. It damages not only the occurrence of your home or business but also deeply damages one’s emotional wellbeing. We often do not keep the little things in check and rely on temporary notions for the long-term. Until the irreversible damage is done, and regrets hit us hard. Why not stay in caution and be prepared for such unpredictable calamities. Preaching ‘Prevention is better than cure’ let us have a check on the basics.

Water mitigation is the process of making repairs after water damage and prevents the potential for further damage. It reduces and prevents any water-related damage such as leaky roofs or plumbing. It looks after the maintenance of the property and restores the damaged property with adept techniques. Water mitigation services evaluate the damage and accordingly perform the course of action. They use different techniques and procedures for divergent categories of water problems. With leaky pipes, bacterial growth may begin in no time. Bacterial growth causes severe problems leading to parthenogenesis. There are various categories for water damage which can slowly extend over a period. Hence, avail to such services in Tampa who prioritize your need more than anything.

Greetings everyone! This is Roy Marshall Tampa FL, Total Remediation LLC. America is a land of progressive and evolutionary resources. Using caution along with proficient services we can stay safe. You may face destructive problems such as leaking faucets, sewage, leaky pipes, or roofs anytime. Thus, it is better to stay protected and ensure the safety of your loved ones. Got a scholarship but I'm bad in school

I've got a scholarship in the UK, in a major that I don't really like. I'm really bad at school and after studying here for 3 months I realized how bad I really am. I'm not really that good at maths, physics, chemistry or biology. And that's what we study the most in this major. I've only taken this scholarship because I didn't want to study in my home country (Saudi Arabia). I graduated from a private school there, which means I don't really have any knowledge, you pass as long as you pay for school in Saudi.

Anyone has any advice?

The app will simply, and quickly only list the 'ACTIVE' Courses the student is enrolled in, only list the course assignments that have NOT been 'TURNED IN', and then click on the assignment to get the full course description with some color coding to indicate the due dates. If you have a minute, let me know your thoughts and anything else we can include to possibly improve this process for the students. One addition could possibly be notifications when assignments are 'due today'.

I’m failing every class and taking Spanish 1, ELA, Math, Wrld History, Chemistry, and PE. The end of the semester is this week. I also attend high school in California.

I think I can do 2-3 classes for summer school and I’m planning to take ELA, Chemistry, and history. I read that you can take 1 year of a foreign language or a performing art, either or. So, I’m planning on taking Theater or Orchestra (a 0 period) next year to make up for those missed credits. Maybe Marching Band to make up PE + Lang./Perf.

Is this a good plan? What can I do better with it? I’ve never failed this much and most of my friendships, a relationship, and part of my future is on the line but no one really knows how to help (neither do I).

Most economical printer to print out all those worksheets?

Anyone who is doing homeschooling or remote learning is probably printing a lot of worksheets and other online materials and I've been spending a lot more on ink cartridges lately. What type of printer would you recommend that's not too expensive but also doesnt cost a lot in terms of replenishing cartridges etc, or general advice for saving when printing materials?

GPA and Special Passing Help?

I'm a freshman and i just finished my first semester of university with a 3.9 CGPA , I took 5 subjects 4 of which i took an A in and 1 in which i took a B+.

Now in my country we are allowed to special pass 1 course per semester until the end of 2020 due to covid. Special Passing a course would pass you the course without counting it into your CGPA.
My Question is should i special pass the B+ course and raise my first semester CGPA to a 4.0 or does keeping the B+ benefit me in any way?

My Advisor advised me to special pass it and maintain the 4.0 in the future. What do you guys think?

Keep in mind special passing a subject has no negative effects at all other than simply not counting a course into my GPA.

Any Tips for Reaching Tech Administrators?

I have been working on an Academic Incentive Platform and am currently seeking Beta Users. Due to the nature of the Application I rely on integrations with software already in use by the District. This means I need the district to participate on some level. I have interviewed many parents who have expressed great interest in the Application. My path into a solid Beta Trial is typically going to be through the Executive Director of Teaching & Learning for a given district. I have made many many attempts to contact these folks with limited success. I made it clear, my solution is not only cost neutral, it actually raises money for participating districts and requires no maintenance from the district. Does anyone have any suggestions in regards to getting through to these folks?

BA ECONOMICS DEGREE WORTH 200K USD ?

I am currently an Economics undergraduate at Virginia Tech. The program is covered by the College of Science however it is to my shock that the Economics Degree is a Bachelors of Arts and not a Bachelors of Science which seems to be highly demotivating.

My main aim is to find employment after graduation and long term goal is to settle down in the US of A.

My question is whether I should transfer to another school that offers a BS in Economics ?

Is a BA in economics valueless compared to a BS in economics?

Here is some history about me :

  1. International student with a average high school performance ( 3.0 gpa ) with a few extracurriculars.

  2. Was accepted to Penn State , Perdue , Virginia Tech , FIU etc.

  3. Currently have an gpa of 3.5 with a mix of calculus and economics courses.

  4. Total yearly bill at VT is around 50k USD for a BA in Econ. Does it make sense ?

All answers and inputs would be greatly appreciated. My main concern is that I graduate with a degree that costed me 200k USD and leaves me jobless in my home country.

Thank you.

Where can I [27] get my GED? A legit GED!

I left my house when I was 17 and worked full time. I started as a restaurant hostess, became a receptionist and graduated to administration. I want more for my life though. I want an actual career and I also want a government job. I’ve always wanted to study forensics and work for law enforcement. Does anyone know what legit place I can get my GED so I can go to college? Thank you!

Is there anyone who is maybe inspired by this task and would like to give me some of that inspiration?

Massive breakdown in communication at my school.

I work for a private non-profit therapeutic day school that services students with behavioral disorders. We have teachers, clinicians, and caseworkers (behavior interventionists), along with a bcba, speech pathologists, and occupational therapist.

Each student has a team of one teacher, one clinician, and one caseworker, and related services when necessary. No one communicates. No one collaborates. Our administration setup is atrocious and important messages fall through the cracks.

I’m a teacher, and I have no say in any decision made. I’ve made a couple efforts at my level to increase team collaboration, but how can we make this better overall?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Google Classroom

For those using Google Classroom as your LMS, what are your biggest challenges with the tool? Also, what are you hearing (and feeling) are challenges for the students?

We are seeing a couple of things.

1.) Teachers not inputting the data correctly (in the proper fields, etc...). This inconsistency is not helping the students develop a routine to find work, do work, submit work.

2.) Without being overwhelmed, students can't see what is due and what's been (properly) submitted in a quick, simple method.

Would you want your kid to have to take an in-person standardized test starting next month?

Tell the Virginia Department of Education to act now to prevent English Learners and their families from facing the unfair health risk and burden of having to take an in-person starardized english proficiency test (WIDA) starting in January. The power to cancel the test will lie with the new Biden Secretary of Education, but Virginia Department of Education needs to advocate and stand with VA teachers, students and the community on this. Students and families shouldn't have to risk their health and safety to take a test to guarantee their own education funding during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. Sign the petition below

I was hoping someone could explain this for me. Im a College student attending Penn State, A public University. My younger siblings got accepted to a private college. Saint Vincent.

What is the difference between attending a public vs private university? I know tuition is more, but is a degree from a private school worth more, then a degree from a public university?

Thanks!

(a vent) Education faculties should be more strict about who they choose as teachers.

this topic is common and talked about but I just felt like venting. I've had an interest in many things including math and i was good at it however when I reached Highschool math became more complex, i was still really interested in it but my teachers weren't helping at all.

one of the main things they did wrong that I just realised now that I'm in college and things are more detailed is them never using mathematical expressions. so let's assume they want to remove the power in loga(a4) and make it a coefficient, they'd say "we take the four and put it on the side" . This method as simple as it is left so many small gaps in my learning process and i hate it.

in 11th grade my math teacher would be speaking gibberish, he was really smart but when putting his knowledge into words everything falls apart,so if you didn't already have knowledge of what he's explaining you wouldn't understand much.

two of my teachers would block questions that aimed for more depth and understanding so no word was being taught outside what's written in books. we took alot of concepts in a shallow way. derivatives were just a rule being applied with no explanation whatsoever of what am i supposed to use it for, and then when we get to use it in physics or such, these teachers would skip it with the argument of "oh you're supposed to be all knowing of this from math, it's not my job".

right now and my math proffesor reads off of slides and when he actually bothers to explain he uses the method I complained about earlier and that sucks, my physics teachers says the sentence "you know this from math i won't explain it" more than he explains things not to mention he gets so lost when you ask a question, oh and my other physics professor throws tantrums at us when we ask because to him if we read the course we should have a full understanding of everything . I wish education systems gave more sh*ts about who they choose as a teacher or make teachers enroll in courses that teaches them how to deliver their knowledge because my interest in math is turning into nothing but stress and burden. needless to say this is hell.

omg one last thing I majored in computer science and we asked a professor about why are we taking physics (cs, math and physics major share the same curriculum the first year) and that in other universities they get straight to it. his response was that they make the first year like this so that it's harder for the cause of making less people pass so yeah what the actual fck, why not make entrance exams but fck me ig I'm 18 what do I know about education right.

FMLA Leave for teachers - Questions

I've been on FMLA since around September/October. My doctor won't sign a release the school requires for me to return to campus. I have NOT received pay in months. I have some questions for others who have been on FMLA:

  1. I have been turning in lesson plans, communicating with students and parents, grading assignments from home. I have not been given the option to teach virtually, though it does exist. Payment stopped as soon as I went on FMLA. Is it normal to still be expected to do these duties without pay?
  2. There is a special circumstance for at-risk teachers to teach home during Covid. My issue is heart related and looks to me (from info from district) that it would qualify for remote teaching (which I am basically doing without pay)
  3. I have never been on leave? Is it normal to be expected to do some amount of at home work (grading, assignments, etc) to keep your position secure?

I've never been in this situation and any answers would be greatly appreciated! I am just unsure as to what the requirements are.

My brother's teacher baited the class by putting test answers on chegg

Yesterday I received a call from my brother's ap computer science teacher telling me that him and several other students cheated on their final, therefore they will get a 0. What my brother did was wrong so I understood and agreed with her. Plagiarism is wrong and consequences should be set. But then she said that she knew they cheated because she was the one who put the test and answers on chegg. I was sort of half asleep so I wasn't sure if I heard her right, but my brother confirmed with me today that she absolutely did that.

I was furious when I heard this. Am I the only one that sees what she did was ethically wrong? This doesn't take away from what the students did, but if you don't want your students to cheat why would you put your test out there in the first place? To set a trap and putting your test and answers on chegg to tempt students to be dishonest? That's so low in my opinion.

I really want to contact her and possibly the principal and express my complaints, but what do you guys think?

5 Minute lesson plan

Hi all!

I have an upcoming graduate school interview in which I am asked to present a 5 minute lesson to a group of my peers and a few interviewers. From the website: "You may teach a lesson of your choice that you have planned for a specific grade level (from pre-K to 12th grade) and subject area. It is acceptable for you to assume some prior knowledge, and you should communicate this to the interviewers and other applicants by beginning your lesson with a reference to an earlier lesson (e.g., “You'll recall, students, that yesterday we began discussing literary devices. Today we're going to talk about one specific literary device called the simile, and you're going to learn how to pick out a simile when you come across one in your reading.”)."

They encourage the lesson to be interactive, so I should include visual aids, handouts, or some sort of group activity. BUT! Its a virtual interview over zoom, which I am confused how I would include worksheets or physical materials. I'm just at a loss of where to start. I feel pretty comfy teaching anything except math, and I studied Geography in undergrad.

I was just wondering if anyone had some ideas, or a good place to start? Maybe a unique idea of something to teach? Or a 5 min lesson plan that really worked for you? Or if you dont have any of those things, any general advice for education grad school interviews? Thanks for the help!

To what extent does an individual teacher contribute to a student’s educational “outcome” vs the school/educational system as a whole?

Which is more important? Having a good teacher? Or having a good system?

A good teacher is, IMO, priceless and also a rarity. When you find someone who is not only talented, but motivated and passionate about teaching as well, you will be hard pressed to find a better candidate to Shepard the next generation into adulthood.

However, a single good teacher cannot address the educational needs of a nation as large as the US. You need a system of education with the right mix of control and freedom to address systemic problems in a regulated and stable way, while also not stifling individuals’ capability to teach effectively.

But I’m torn. I’m not sure which would help society more - if you could only choose one, which would be more important to the educational well-being of a student - the individual teaching them, or the system of education they’re a part of?

Thanks for any and all insight

The confusion around ISAs

This article by Edsurge says a lot of students don't actually understand ISAs.

Classroom/school community consultant

Hi all,

I’m looking for advice, tips, anecdotes, etc. I just completed my Bachelor of Education, however, due to a head injury and poor management of said injury, I now suffer from chronic tinnitus and hyperacusis, so teaching in an elementary classroom or gym (phys ed specialist) is not really an option for me. It’s disappointing and I don’t think I’ve fully come to grips with it yet.

I’m looking to still work within the education field, although I find just working in a school is extremely loud and unpredictable. I’ve been looking into becoming a consultant, but due to my severe lack of experience in schools (only 2 years in non-teaching positions/occasional subbing positions) I’m worried this won’t be possible... I’ve been looking into masters programs to bolster my resume.

I’m currently working in a school with a really poor culture, lack of mutual respect, enormous amounts of gossip/bullshit, blah blah blah. As shitty as this experience is, it’s also given me some insight into what kind of consulting business I can open, which is developing a positive school culture and climate rooted in respect, integrity and compassion. However, I’m not sure how feasible this could be in the long-term. I know the province in which I live typically has a pretty negative culture as a whole, small-town gossip is all the rage and the big city folk think they are on top of the world (city population is less than 500,000).. it’s beyond frustrating. I guess my question after this long-winded post is two fold; does anyone have experience in this and could you provide any words of advice/encouragement and would it be a feasible option for me to pursue?

Studying law in a problematic country

It's hard to watch the news, hear about injustice, how the people in charge are selfish pigs playing with the law, police brutality etc. My country is small and poor. Sometimes it feels like studying law is not worth it. I say to myself that maybe in the future by doing my part I'll bring some change, but some days I have no fuel to go on looking how imperfect the system is. Things in real life are not always the same as you read them on books in school. I have no regrets for the path I have chosen just scared that I might later on in the future when I'm not a student anymore. I still want to believe in justice and believe that things could be better even tho nothing and no one is encouraging.

Improving my speech and having a hard time pronouncing words

So from Kindergarten to fifth grade, my sister was the one to help me with school. I got held back in first grade and you can imagine why. It's not her fault, she was in highschool and needed to focus on herself. I don't blame my mother either because she had to support her family, making sure we all had clothes, shoes, and food to eat. I just had a hard time learning because I was focused on trying to make myself likable to make up for the areas I hated myself for.

I do think that elementary really fuck me up tho with my education. I always hated reading out loud because I don't know how to pronounce a lot of words. I know their meaning and all but my brain just won't sound it out because as soon as I look at it, my brain just freezes. I assume it's my brain still trying to protect me from all those embarrassing times.

When speaking with family or friends, I mispronounce a lot of words and they correct me or tease me (not my friends, they understand when I explained to them and they have offered help if I ask for it)

My question is how can I improve it? How do I get in the habit of studying and what are the best websites, videos, etc to study with? I already took the offer and ask for help from my friend and she suggested that we'll study together. I'm asking for more help so she knows that I really do want to try and it's for when I can't study with her. I'm also 16 (17 in a few months).

I know I don't have any learning disabilities, it was because I didn't try to learn what I was required in school before.

Broke Teacher Wanna Be

Hi everyone, I recently finished my student teaching (secondary PE) and got a job as a long-term sub, which gave me a contract with full benefits till May. I'm thinking about adding PK-12 and Health to my endorsement so I will be more "sell-able" during job hunting.

I'm married and my husband is also a college student. He is 6 years older than me. He has been unemployed since his part-time job company went bankrupt 2 years ago. We are also full-time caregivers to his grandma, who has Alzheimer's disease.

I'm so tired of being broke and I'm so ready to start working. Whatever I can get to earn decently. Is it worth to spend another $8000 ish to add PK-12 and Health to my endorsement area? Is it going to make it easier for me to find a job? Any information will be appreciated. Thanks!

Is there a coordinated effort to collect higher ed coursework/lectures?

Think about it: nearly every lecture/assignment for every class at every college around the world has just been put online. Given that profs/universities probably signed away a good amount of IP rights to use sites like Canvas, if Canvas wanted to it could break higher education by making it all accessible for free, or try to compete as a content creator with all of the content they were just given, they could.

Should there be a citizen/student-led effort to do the same?

Holy Ghost Speakeasy and Revival

I’ve got an essay to write over a book I can’t afford and my professor is still making me take it. Is there anyone here that has read it and can help me with it? Thank you!

things my HS US History teacher done in a presentation/lecture that they posted that is memorable

First of all, it was about the Civil War, and second, it was their first year teaching at the high school that I currently attend. If you're reading this, I love your humor. And this was in one presentation.

  • used Amazon Prime to buy a Civil War bullet. like, seriously. Why? I totally get it that you might've wanted to show the class, but I didn't mind. and yes, they said it in the presentation
  • used 2 memes in a row. One of which I wanted to show, but since I (or maybe everyone who isn't a mod) didn't have the option to post a picture, I can't post it. it was that one and a version of the Stonks meme.
  • We had to answer questions that relate to the presentation, and they used so twice
  • misspelling of Manassas. Spelled manases in the presentation, which was an Israeli tribe.
  • Thinking about how to describe something during the presentation

I started a Physics Youtube channel to help teachers with fun experiments

Hi guys! I wanted to help as many teachers as possible so I hope it's okay to post here. I made a video that shows a fun experiment with helium balloons. It's for anyone teaching gravity, Archimedes' Principle (buoyancy and density), and Newton's Second and Third Laws.

I really want my videos to be helpful for students so if it's not too much to ask, can yall watch it and tell me your thoughts? :) Also, I'd love to know which topics you need help with so I can feature them in my next video :)
