In one of the year 6 PE classes I teach during the week we've got quite a few kids who are using some pretty awful language (mostly fuck, crap, and shit) but they're also using some terms I'm a lot less impressed by - gay boy, batty boy, retard, and such. On Monday I'm going to speak to their head of year about how we're going to solve this because juvenile swearing I can put up with if it's not disruptive or directed, but I'm really not happy with the latter terms, especially given that about half my mates are somewhere along the rainbow distribution. Just shouting at them won't get anywhere, so how can I help explain to these kids why they shouldn't be using this kind of language? Next year they'll be in secondary, and they'll wind up in serious trouble either from their teachers or from someone taking offence and taking matters into their own hands if they carry on like this.
