I REALLY didn’t plan on this post being this long but PLEASE READ because these ideas about our education system just started flowing in my head and I want some peoples thoughts on them PLEASE.
Guys just think about how hard it’s been for millennials compared to the generation before us right? Now think about gen z and what things will be like for them. Even pre covid they were screwed. And now since covid they are SO behind on education.
In the amount of time these kids have been out of school, which is this entire time let’s be real even now kids aren’t getting an education at all still, the government could’ve revamped the entire education system in America by now and rolled out a brand new and improved system.
One that focuses on things people NEED to know and isn’t filled with a bunch of random pointless things. They could focus on trade skills, current and future tech such as more classes related to coding and software, more classes on life skills, classes focusing on industries such as the real estate industry, auto industry, computers, construction, medical, social work/psychology, emergency services, politics, finance, food, etc.
Imagine if we had classes that focused on real industries and a student would first take a generic class for each industry (very broadly and they would still need to pick the 4 or so main ones that interest them) say freshman year, and this class would teach you all about the different careers in each industry, what the work is like, the pay, what skills are needed, maybe what a day in the life of one of these employees looks like and how much they enjoy it, and all the different routes and aspects that each industry has. Like REAL WORLD knowledge that kids so desperately need before they are thrown out the world after graduation.
And then come sophomore year the student can then pick classes that get more specific. Let’s say you keep some core classes such as math, English, science, and history. So you have 4 classes that focus all on life skills. And these classes could also be tied into your core classes which could actually replace them. For instance if you’re taking construction industry classes then they could weave math into these classes so that you wouldn’t actually need the core math class and instead could fill that slot with other life related things. (Or maybe we could use less time in school so that in school time is optimized to the times that studies show students absorb the most and actually learn.) but continuing on with this, let’s continue with the construction industry. You could then have classes chosen by the student that would focus specifically on residential construction, or commercial construction. And you would’ve already learned general things about these routes freshman year that would’ve helped you decide which route interests you more.
Let’s say a student chooses the computer/tech industry. Sophomore year they’d choose classes like software or web development, cyber security or networking, computer technical support, etc. They could be taking multiples of one industry or could be learning about at least 4 different industries and the skills they need to work in those industries. This would be having kids graduating high school with the career readiness of some college kids, or maybe college kids that are halfway through their degree at least. AND possibly not in just ONE industry but FOUR.
With each yeah the classes would get more and more specific to that industry. OR the kid could go back and choose the level 1 industry class that’s offered sophomore year. Doing this a kid could learn the very basics of 12 or more industries. Those very basics would likely land them jobs in most of these careers. Especially the ones that don’t actually require that magic piece of paper and only require the knowledge to do your job.
