Who do we blame/who is at fault when a kid fails the yearly standard must pass to move to the next grade test? Do we as a society just tell these kids they are dumb and need to sit through it again for another year and hope you remember better this time or what? Cause obviously whatever way/method you were showing them the first time didnt work.
Im watching a situation unfold right now where a 9 year in Indiana did not pass the iREAD3 spring and or summer test and as far as im seeing will be told to resit through 3rd grade. This kid also had kids in his class in his first year of 3rd grade who were retaking the grade for a second time. So this is showing that whatever is going on either the teachers, the methods, the schools, etc. is failing to help these children.
This specific child was told in kindergarten that he and a couple other kids were behind in writing. No extra help was started, just told. 2nd grade this child i guess was suggested to retake 2nd grade because he was showing being behind and retaking the grade is all they can do for him cause the school cant administer help until he was older. There was actually a little side help in the first year of 3rd grade where this kid was pulled aside with a select few others where they were pulled out of class to get some extra attention. According the these test results, that failed to help. No where is there an alertance from anyone throughout the year to try to take the falling kids and try more or try something else cause regular class just isnt working. I wonder what goes through the educators minds as they just sit there and watch a kid/kids just fail all year long.
Here is a video in the news admitting that 1 in 5 children are not passing this test:
Would love to hear everyones thoughts and opinions.
P.s. this school district just put hella money into building a huge brand new workout gym for the high school and i believe are doing stuff to the field during this summer, last year built a brand new baseball "locker room" building. So it deffinately isnt a funding issue or funding priority to get these kids help.
