I am a 4th grade teacher from Massachusetts. I went from teaching at one of the poorest neighborhoods in Boston to teaching at an upper-middle class community located in the suburbs of Boston (Brookline, MA). While I was at that urban school, I couldn't help but noticed that the issues go way beyond funding. The kids lacked discipline and parental involvement. Parents were too busy working multiple jobs to get involved in their kids' lives. This perpetuated a culture of laziness and constant disruptions. Kids were constantly coming to school with their homework unfinished. The kids were incredibly disrespectful and rude. They kept leaving their seats, throwing things, not doing work, refusing to follow basic routines, etc. Cussing and fighting were the norm. I got called names such as bitch, hoe, motherfucker. While I was there, I kept asking myself why those people had kids. Those kids are perfect examples as to why you should use a condom or practice abstinence if you don't have the time to dedicate to your kids. And did I mention that the school had an incredibly high turnover rate? People were quitting within days, weeks, months.
Now let's talk about my experience teaching at the suburbs. Those issues that I was facing at a daily basis at my previous school are rare at my current school. I found the kids in suburbs to have a lot more self-control, more home support, more desire to come to school to learn (as opposed to coming to school to have basic needs met), etc. They are worlds apart academically, behaviorally, socially, emotionally, etc. Not to mention, the parents at my current school are highly involved in their kids' lives!
